God Moments
Three days before writing this article I met with a lady whose mother had died. We discussed matters surrounding the funeral and a Thanksgiving Service. Two days later I baptised a gorgeous pair of twin girls in the presence of loving parents, godparents, friends and doting grandparents. An hour before writing the article I was interviewing a couple who I will be marrying in a few weeks’ time.
One of the privileges of being a priest is that you are invited into people’s lives at the most special and intimate times to perform various ministries according to the rites of the church and in a long standing tradition dating back many centuries.
What is it that is so important that people want the Christian church to perform these ceremonies of burial, baptism and marriage?
You can have a naming ceremony for a child, but I don’t see the point because you get a Birth Certificate which records a child’s name. Why pay somebody a fee to state what has already been done? A baptism is the act a making a person a member of the Christian Church, with parents and godparents promising to bring the child up in the Christian faith.
Couples can have a civil wedding ceremony. There are no prayers or Bible readings or blessing and it does not take place in a church. A Christian wedding incorporates church teaching on marriage, scripture readings, hymns prayers and blessings, leaving the couple in no doubt that their vows are made before God and are sacred.
You can have a private funeral and be buried on private land but it worries me if a person’s immortal soul is not commended into God’s hands and sent on its journey from this world.

It is important to acknowledge these special moments in life and what better way to do that than by ceremonies assuring us of God’s abiding love and presence? Clearly the majority of people in our society agree or they would not ask their priests to conduct their baptisms, weddings and funerals. They are those moments when God touches peoples’ lives in a most profound way. What a pity they are the only ones some people ever experience.

All singing; all dancing improvements in the Hall
__________________________________________________________________________________
The latest additions to the Hall’s excellent audio/visual system mean that it is now fully accessible to hirers. The overhead projector and Bose surround-sound can be connected to hirers’ laptops, iPhones or other audio devices for film & photo presentations and for enhanced musical entertainment. Please mention your interest in using this equipment when making a Hall booking enquiry. There is no additional charge; only a refundable deposit is required. Easy to follow instructions will be provided.
At the recent Horticultural Club Spring Meeting in the Hall, this new kit was fully utilised. The guest speaker, Martin Duncan, Head Gardener of Arundel Castle Gardens, said that he wished all clubs he visited had access to such excellent a/v systems!
PLUS: following recent improvements to the external lighting to aid safe access to and from the Hall, the internal lighting has now also been enhanced. This
will provide greater flexibility for all events, especially parties, presentations and performances. Check it out!

Celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday Lurgashall has a long, proud history of marking national milestones with inclusive, community events. Surely we are not going to miss out on this one! Time is short, but not too short to plan a successful event. But, if this is going to happen at all, then a small team of organisers will be needed. Please get in touch with either Malcolm Caird (708120) or Sue Lambot (707419) with your suggestions -
• the form such a celebration
could take
• possible activities especially for the children
• catering ideas
- and, hopefully, your offer of help.
Don’t wait; please do it now! The most likely date for this party is the afternoon of Sunday 19th June as the Green is available. So - let’s start the birthday ball rolling now - rather than reflect on a missed opportunity to celebrate together.

On V.E. Day in 1945, as peace is declared across Europe and London is celebrating, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret are allowed to join the celebrations, against the Queen’s wishes. The King, impressed by Elizabeth's pleading, asks her to report back on the people's feelings towards him and his midnight speech on the radio
Douglas Rae, known to many people in Lurgashall, co-produced this film, and has kindly agreed to introduce the film and host a Q&A session afterwards

LURGASHALL OIL BUYING GROUP
The April order was for about 15,000 ltrs @ 28.5 ppl + VATfrom Watson Fuels.
Comparative prices (all + VAT @ 5%):
Boilerjuice for a 15,000 litre group delivery - 29.30 ppl
Certas 29.99pplRawlings 28.95pplLinton 28.65ppl
Speedy Fuels donot do syndicate orders, butwere offering 28.55ppl for a 2000 litre delivery.
Watson Fuels has taken over Linton Fuels and also owns MinsterFuels. WP is no longer competitive in this delivery area so thereare now very few independent suppliers given that Certas ownsCPL, Southern Counties, Pace Fuels, Butler Fuels, Advance Fuelsand EMU.
The next order will be placed in the first week of June. I send anemail to members at the beginning of the month asking if theywant to join that delivery and how much they estimate theymight need. The price obviously varies from week to week. Iorder every month in the winter and every other month fromApril to October.

LURGASHALL CRICKET CLUB
All we need now is plenty of sunshine! Matches being played on the green in the early weeks of the season are as follows May 7 Sat Grayswood III v Bramley II (league) May 8 Sun Hammer Bottom Butsers v Gentlemen of Bedales May 14 Sat Lurgashall v Frensham II (league) May 15 Sun Hammer Bottom Butsers v Harry Baldwin Occasionals May 21 Sat Grayswood III v Peper Harow II (league) May 22 Sun Adam Saward fixture May 28 Sat Grayswood III v Kingsley II (league) May 29 Sun Tom Clarke match May 30 Mon Gentlemen of Lurgashall v Gentlemen of Milland Lurgashall started with two home matches in April, and will be playing in Division 2 (of 6) of the I’Anson league, the oldest league in the country now in its 116th season. The mood among Lurgashall’s cricketers is very positive as the new season approaches. The end of the football season overlapping with the start of cricket creates headaches for selection, as it does for every club, but we continue to be able to field a comparatively young team, whose average age is considerably lower than many of our opponents To attract younger players, we need to provide excellent playing facilities, which of course incur a sizeable cost. Our square and outfield have been complimented by many umpires as being among the best in the league. This is why we have to rely on so many guest teams playing here – each provide much needed revenue, but accept our strictures to play in a manner befitting the best traditions and ethos that the sport of cricket demands, and to respect the setting in which they play

Lurgashall Fete 2016 Saturday 4th June
See you there! Hi there from Lurgashall Fete! Yes, the Great Day for the 2016 Fete approaches fast - and now we really need your help. All the main attractions are booked - Vic Cracknell and his band will be the main entertainers again this year after their barnstorming performances over the last 4 years. There’ll be lots to do for all the family: races for the children (and for the dogs!), the tug-o-war, the ride-on railway, the famous monster bouncy castle and maze will be back too. May is the big collections month, so we need your annual turn out to supply our stalls please. Contributions of ‘spare’ Christmas presents, bottles, books (change of drop-off location – see below) and clothing are needed; budding cooks and gardeners can help too. The contacts for the various stalls are listed below - donations please. Special request - no books or silent auction prizes on fete day please - drop them in advance. We’re delighted to have Pam Patrick now running the famous Boutique, so please make sure she gets some great stock. There are still plenty of slots for helpers in all sorts of ways. In particular, more helpers are needed for the tea stall, the barbecue and the Bouncy Castle during the afternoon, even just for an hour, so that would be a nice way to help if you just wanted a small role. It would be great to hear from you - please call or email me. It’s great fun!

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
Last month, I provided a list of those things you and I can do to limit our exposure to computer/identity fraud. No doubt all of you have assiduously embraced each one them. This month, I thought I’d list those several steps that you can take that might reduce physical criminal incidents. All of these have been discussed here previously. I simply thought a list might provide a helpful reminder. Don’t put this list on the fridge; put it with your insurance policy.
1. If you have a gate, use it – lock it 2. Front door – double dead bolts 3. Ground floor window locks 4. Smartwater on exterior metal surfaces 5. Valuables kept outside master bedroom 6. Alarms – installed & engaged, preferably to a
central station 7. Garden sheds – internal locks 8. Garden equipment marked by police
The objective in all this is to shift the criminals’ risk-reward equation a little bit in our favour so that they look elsewhere. Any questions: [email protected]
