This year is the 450th anniversary of his birth and thus it is appropriate that exponents of one art-form (music) acknowledge the genius of one in another (poetry). Often this manifests itself in the form of settings of his words, both in solo song and in choral settings; elsewhere it is Shakespeare's plots that give creative impulse to instrumental music, as incidental music to his plays (or films of those plays); also represented are works that are inspired by quotations from the dramatist. The centenary of the creation of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich is celebrated specifically through several works written in that same year (1914) as well as through music of the first quarter of the twentieth century.
