The words of the greatElizabethan playwright,William Shakespeare, provide
a starting point for many of thisyear’s recitals. This year is the450th anniversary of his birth andthus it is appropriate that exponentsof one art-form (music)acknowledge the genius of one in another (poetry).Often this manifests itself in theform of settings of his words, bothin solo song and in choral settings;elsewhere it is Shakespeare's plots
that give creative impulse toinstrumental music, as incidentalmusic to his plays (or films of thoseplays); also represented are worksthat are inspired by quotations from the dramatist. The centenary of the creation of theDiocese of St Edmundsbury andIpswich is celebrated specificallythrough several works written inthat same year (1914) as well asthrough music of the first quarter of the twentieth century.
