LUM Camp is a weeklong
overnight camp for boys and
girls, 8, 9 and 10 years old.
They are children who come
from families served by the
Lafayette Urban Ministry. Our
camp includes all the magical
things a great camp should:
morning chapel, nature hikes,
arts and crafts, boating, campfires and an outstanding
staff of camp counselors. But along with these, LUM
Camp teaches our campers that learning is fun!
Our 2016 LUM Camp theme is…
On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away
The theme will focus on the Indiana Bicentennial
Celebration 2016. Campers will learn about our state’s
rich history, famous personalities, contributions to
science, agriculture, sports, and the performing arts.
LUM campers will leave camp proud of their Hoosier
heritage and inspired by the opportunities that await
them in the years to come as citizens of our great state.
LUM Camp is a scholarship-based camp. LUM only
accepts children whose parents are not able to pay for the
$150 per child cost of LUM Camp. Won’t you consider
a gift of $150 to send a child to LUM Camp 2016? Your
campership will pay for a child’s transportation, room
and board, camp activities, educational programs and
supplies — everything he or she will need to attend this
year’s LUM Camp.
$300 will allow two children to attend LUM Camp $450 will provide three camperships $75 will provide one-half of a campership
Over 50 years ago, LUM Camp was started with a
simple goal of giving inner-city children a chance to
experience a week of camping. Today it is that and
much, much more. With your generous help, the magic
will happen again this summer.
LUM Camp is one of the finest overnight summer camp
programs available to children anywhere. It is the week
of August 1 at the beautiful Hanging Rock Camp in
Warren County. There are nearly 100 children who are
waiting for the chance to attend.
Please, won’t you help build their futures by offering to
them the gift of LUM Camp?

Become a LUM Donor—LUM receives most of its financial support from individual gifts, church groups, member church contributions, and donations from civic groups and businesses. The fifth annual LUM Good Samaritan Fund Follies was a magical evening for the capacity
crowd — & all in support of emergency financial assistance for local families. The LUM Follies
stage show wowed the audience, and the meal was scrumptious (especially the cake ala mode).
LUM Follies guests bid generously on an exciting variety of Silent Auction baskets and made
specific donations using the Butterfly Tree (community needs with donations amounts) — making
this year's LUM Follies successful in many ways.
The best part is that 100% of the proceeds from the LUM Good Samaritan Fund Follies goes to
the LUM Good Samaritan Fund. If you missed this year’s LUM Follies and still wish to make a
difference by making a donation, use the enclosed envelope or give online at www.lumserve.org.
Lafayette Urban Ministry has recently been awarded two Community Development Block Grants from the City of Lafayette & City of West Lafayette.
LUM was awarded $21,800—$15,000 from Lafayette and $6,800 from West Lafayette.
CDBG is an important resource for local governments in their efforts to provide both transitional and permanent housing, as well as supportive services, to families and individuals experiencing homelessness. This grant money will be used to support our homeless clients.
Thanks to Gina Williams, LUM Emergency Shelter director, for her work on these grants.
If you wish to donate to the LUM Emergency Shelter, go to www.lumserve.org/donate.
Carmen was honored by the LUM Board of Directors in appreciation for her volunteer work at LUM.
In 2006, toward the end of her high school career, Carmen was in a car accident which left her in a coma for a month and in need of intensive physical rehabilitation. She was unable to keep her first job, could not afford her rent and became a LUM Emergency Shelter guest. Through her faith, hard work and determination, Carmen has turned her life around. Once she found permanent housing again, Carmen wanted to give something back to LUM. After a brief discussion with LUM staff, Carmen decided to clean the LUM Youth Center three times a week as a volunteer and has been doing so since last summer. Carmen is a remarkable person and a wonderful example of how important the LUM Emergency Shelter is for our community. To learn more about Carmen’s story, go to www.lumserve.org/meet-carmen.
