The average Ugandan uses 15 litres of water per day, compared to Canadians who use 329 litres. In Uganda a rural community’s water source, usually nothing more than a muddy pond, can be a two-kilometre walk from its school.

Waterborne illness is rampant. Students in rural Uganda miss a quarter of every school year due to sickness contracted from drinking filthy water. As a result, the average Ugandan child has only a 3 per cent chance of achieving a postsecondary education.

Since 2009, Ontario-based charity Tin Roof Global has been building rainwater collection systems at rural Ugandan schools. With a 30,000-litre storage tank, a simple filter and a bit of education, we can dramatically increase students’ access to clean water.

As a result, children are healthier, they attend school more regularly, and they have better opportunities to continue their education at a higher level. It’s a simple solution, and it couldn’t happen without the help of students right here in southern Ontario.

IN RURAL UGANDA, EVERYONE WALKS FOR WATER

THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE: WE CAPTURE & CLEAN THE RAIN

Tin Roof Global’s Lug-a-Bucket workshop is designed for student councils, clubs or classes from Grades 5 to 8. It features a series of hands-on, inquiry-based activities

that help students feel what it’s like to be one of their peers in rural Uganda – eager to succeed in school yet struggling due to a lack of access to clean water.

After the workshop is completed, students embark on the Lug-a-Bucket Challenge, a five-day fundraising drive that sees them performing several water-based stunts that help create a wider awareness about global water issues. Tin Roof Global provides teachers and students with the tools to be successful, including online fundraising options and several ideas for raising awareness within the school and community.

All funds raised by students during your Lug-a-Bucket Challenge go towards Tin Roof Global’s next water system for a school in Uganda.
