Dear Sir or Madam,

Application for Graduate Mechanical Engineer

I am writing to apply for the position of Mechanical Engineer, as recently advertised on SEEK.com.au. I am a highly-motivated individual with the qualifications of Bachelor’s degree of Engineering and Master’s degree of Engineering Science (Management), combined with three years of working experience in university and over 18 months working as Assistant to CEO at an international firm.

I am particularly interested in joining the engineering team at Laing O'Rourke due to your reputation for innovation in the global construction space.

During my time at university, I took a course on mechanical design in power plants, from which I learned a lot about 3D modelling, mechanical stimulation and analysis. I was required to consult the Australian Standards for pressure vessels as well as undertake some additional risk assessments. I learned about carbon emission auditing which is of particular relevance to the mining, natural resources, and energy sectors. Having completed several projects in the mechanical field during my time at UQ, I am confident I have the skills and experience in mechanical engineering to add value to Laing O'Rourke.

My work experience as the University Tutor has endowed me with strong evaluation, reporting and presentation skills derived from the preparation of lecture materials and experiments, as well as working with students and academia to illustrate problem solving techniques and evaluate student performance. Working as a Research Assistant, I liaised with the wider research team and the Professor presiding over that team. My recent experience working as Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer in an international company rounds out my professional experience and has endowed me with a unique work perspective.

As an individual, I have proven experience working both autonomously and as part of team under limited supervision. I have a solid foundation via my educational background, and a strong determination to reach my career goals. I am flexible in terms of travel, and I believe that as a woman I bring a differentiated viewpoint as well as valuable creative insight to mechanical engineering field.

I would very much appreciate an opportunity to elaborate on my skills and capabilities during an interview, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Lucy Young
