Personal Backround• His mother Mary Marshall became increasingly unstable, possibly

due to the early death of turners younger sister, Helen Turner in 1786. Mary Marshall died in 1804 after being in the Bethlem Royal hospital- (mental hospital,) in 1799. Most likely do to the load placed on the family by these problems, Turner at a every young age was sent to stay with his maternal uncle in Bredford in 1785. It was here he expressed an interest in painting. A year later he attended a school in north east Kent, Margate.

• A water color by Turner was accepted in1790 after only one year's study at the Royal Academy of Art school. He exhibited his first oil painting in 1796, Fishermen at Sea, and then after exhibited at the academy nearly every year for the rest of his life.

• As he grew older, Turner became more eccentric. He had few close friends except for his father, who lived with him for thirty years, eventually working as his studio assistant. His father's death in 1829 had a large effect on him, and there after suffered from depression.

Key Historical Events• In 1750-1850 Britain’s industrial revolution was

the period when Britain’s dominance of overseas market through its empire, and the availability at home of local and iron are transformed from a farming, to a manufacturing community.

• The first factories were often built In the countryside. So to provide housing for the industrial workers, new towns were built next to the factories.

• The first railroad opened in 1835. This could have made it easy for Turner to travel to different locations to paint his different landscapes and natural disasters.

Turner’s Traits

• Medium: Turner mainly used oil paint with all of his paintings to capture the bright light and the dark, ominous feelings.

• Color, Light and Shadow: He used lots of bright yellows or oranges to express lights in his paintings, even if there was a dark scene. He is said to have uttered the last words "The sun is God" before he died.

• Subject or theme: All of Turner’s paintings were of landscapes and natural disasters either from his time in England or from history.

• Mood and Tone: His beginning pieces were very bright, but as he grew older (mainly because the death of his farther in 1829,) he started to become more depressed and so expressed more dark tones.
