Chronology• 1720-39 Sadat Khan defeats Sheikhzadas on Lucknow

• 1756-75 Shuja-ud-Daula looses his influence to the British at the battle of

Buxar.

• 1775-98 Asaf-ud-Daula shifts his capital from Faizabad to Lucknow - enlivens

the City with Claude Martin

• 1848-56 Wajid Ali Shah builds Kaiserbagh - Poets and dancers entertained -

Lord Dalhouste pronounces his deposition - Kingdom of Oudh

annexed by British East India Company territories.

• 1857- 58 The Mutiny uprising and the siege of the British Residency in

Lucknow make news all over the world.

• 1862 Arrivals of Railways in Lucknow.

• Is a land of Nawabs and Kebabs

• Well known for its ‘tehzeeb’ or extreme delicacy and cultivated manners

• ‘Pehele aap’ meaning after you is inherent to every person

• Lucknow airport known as the Amausi Airport

• The railway station is known as Charbagh Station.

• Lucknow Mahotsav- arranged every year in the months of Nov-Dec - revives the

glory of the city

• The modern city sprawls on the both sides of river Gomti.

Art and Crafts• World renowned for Chikan work- a unique craft-

involving fine hand embroidery- on fabrics like muslin,

silk, chiffon, organza, doriya etc.

• Embroidered on the kurats, saree, salwar suits, topis,

handkeys, dupattas, table covers, napkins etc.

• Mainly done in the Chowk and Daliganj area

• Zardosi (gold embroideries) on silk fabric

Important Monuments

ASAFI or BARA IMAMBARA

• Built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784

• Also known as ‘Bhul Bhulaiyan’

• Central hall - 20,000 tonne roof - largest room in the

world- unsupported by pillars

• It is said that while one group of the poor built it during

the day time, another group dismantled it at night,

providing endless employment.

HUSSAINABAD or CHHOTA IMAMBARA

• Built by Nawab Mohamma Ali Shah between 1837-42

• Has a golden dome and numerous turrets and minarets

CHARBAGH RAILWAY STATION

• Built in 1914

• Fine blend of Rajasthani and Mughal style

CHATTAR MANZIL

• Built by Nawab Ghazi-ud-din Haider

• Completed by his son Nasir-u-din Haider

• Chattar Manzil means “Umbrella Palace”

LUCKNOW RESIDENCY

• Built between 1780-1800

• Was then used as official residence of the

British Resident

• Britishers took refuge here in

Mutiny of 1857

• Blends Italian architecture style with the

native Hindu and Muslim styles
