 What?

• Lubricating oil in the machinery system acts to

minimize friction on the surface of the moving

components.

• Lubricating oil also functions as a cooling fluid on

some motors.• Lubrication system is also used for cooling and

lubrication of the engine bearings, piston cooling, and

so on.

Type

• Uni Lubricating Oil System

 – System that lubricates the moving parts of the engine-part,

such as: crank shaft, main bearings, journal bearings, cam

shafts, pistons, connecting rods, exhaust valve actuator and

the other moving parts other than the cylinder .

• Cylinder Lubricating Oil System

 – Specific lubrication system which lubricates the engine

cylinder using the principle of gravity

Uni Lubricating Oil System

• LO System

 – Cooling, filtering, and supplying LO to M/E (bearings,

camshaft, exhaust valve actuator, piston)

 – Sump tankLO pumpLO coolerfull-flow filterEngine

LO system’s Components

• LO bottom tank (sump tank)

 – Location: below m/e;

 –  Volume: ref to project guide, f(no. of cylinder);

 – Drain location: engine;

 –

Cofferdams must be provided surroundings;• LO pipes

 – Schedule : 40 or 80 (3rd or 2nd class);

 – Diam: according to Q (project guide) and V (typically 1.5 m/s

1.8 m/s);

 –

No passing through: ballast, FW, and feed water tanks; – Usually galvanized (recommended);

 – Minimum pipe thickness should refer to Class.

LO system’s Components

• LO PUMP – To circulate the LO from Bottom Tank (Sump Tank) to engine

and back again to Bottom Tank (Sump Tank);

 – Type : screw atau gear pump with sufficient Q and Pressure ;

 – Location: tank top (closest possible to LO tank);

 – Q = Ref to project guide (depends on BHP); –  Vflow = refer to engine Project Guide (typically max 1.8 m/s);

 – Head total = ΔHz + ΔHp + total Head loss;

 – Hz = elevation of (tank – inlet on engine);

 – Hp = delivery pressure (ref to Project Guide , typically 4 bar)

 – H loss tot = H friction + H loss accessories;

 –  Accessories include fittings, valves, filter (HL typically 0.5bar), cooler (typically 0.3 bar).

LO system’s Components

• Lubricating oil cooler

 – Is used to cool the LO which exit from the engine.

 – Cooling media : SW

 – Type: shell and tube or heat plate exchanger

•Separator or Purifier – Is used to purify the LO due to contamination of water

content or sludge which is coming from engine.

• Lubricating oil temperature control valve

 – 3-way valve;

 –

To by-pass partially or fully LO cooler.
