Heart Parts

You will need to be able to label the following parts of the circulatory system AND know what their “job” is: Left and right atrium Left and right ventricle Aorta Superior vena cava Inferior vena cava Pulmonary artery Pulmonary vein

The best way to learn the parts is to learn the path…and remember that ARTERIES take blood away from the heart.

We will begin with: The Vena Cava – There are two of them. The

superior vena cava brings blood from the upper part of the body back to the heart. While the inferior vena cava brings blood from the lower part of the body. (Find both on your diagram)

The vena cava enter the right atrium and they deliver the deoxygenated blood.

The Right Atrium Receives deoxygenated blood from the vena

cava. The right atrium sends the blood into the right

ventricle (Find on the diagram) Note that there is a valve between the two chambers, this is to prevent blood from flowing in the wrong direction

The Right Ventricle Receives the deoxygenated blood from the

right atrium. The right ventricle pumps the blood into the

Pulmonary artery

The Pulmonary Artery carries blood to the Lungs. (Find it) The blood will be oxygenated in the lungs. Small capillaries lining the alveoli allow this to

happen. The Pulmonary vein

Carries oxygenated blood back to the heart. It enters the left atrium. (Find them)

Left Atrium Receives the oxygenated blood from the lungs

(via the pulmonary vein) Pumps the blood to the left ventricle There is valve between the two chambers

Left Ventricle Receives blood from the left atrium Pumps the oxygenated blood out of the heart

and in to the Aorta

The Aorta is the largest artery in the body It carries oxygenated blood to the body It branches of into smaller arteries, which

become arterioles, which become capillaries Capillaries deliver the oxygen (and other

supplies) directly to the cell.

Capillaries These also pick up the deoxygenated blood

and start it on the return trip back to the heart.

Venules, veins and vena cava These become larger and are returning the

blood to the heart.

Systemic Circulation This is the circulation of blood through the

body, to the cells and back again Pulmonary Circulation

This is circulation of blood between the heart and lungs.
