WritingPoetry Writing: Mastering the SonnetWhen most people think of the sonnet, they probably think of Shakespeare staring out of an open window, ink all over his hands. They may also think of the sonnet as a form specifically intended for writing about love. While Shakespeare did write sonnets and some sonnets are written about love, the sonnet is an open world with endless possibilities. Mastering the sonnet means mastering several poetic elements that are vital to many more modern forms, like free verse. In this workshop, we will look at traditional sonnets, more modern versions, and other poetic forms. We will write sonnets of our own and workshop them among our peers. We will discuss the current publishing industry and how to enter into and stay active within the writing community. Ages 16+
