GEOLOGY & GEOPHYSICS DISCOVER LSU LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY The Field Geology is the study of the Earth - the rocks and fossils of which it is made, the processes that shape it, and the history of life. Geology is the fundamental environmental science. Mastery of geology requires a knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology to understand present and past interactions of the lithosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. The Curriculum Students pursuing degrees in geology must fulfill the academic requirements of the College of Science and the Department of Geology & Geophysics. The three BS.oncentrations areas are: Geology Environmental Geology Geophysics During the freshman year, the student should take a series of intro geology courses. For graduation, they must take mineralogy, paleontol- ogy, petrology, sedimentary processes, structural geology, geophysics, plate tectonics, geochemistry, and GEOL 3666, “Field Geology,” at the department’s field camp in Colorado. Departmental Scholarships The Department of Geology & Geophysics does offer scholarships specifically for qualifying geology students. These are in addition to the hundreds of competitive scholarships awarded by the Unversity each year. From understanding mountain forming processes to the timing of glacial retreats in Antarctica, there is a project that will interest you. If you are interested in undergraduate research, please contact a faculty advisor.
