Fundamentals of Movement ToFundamentals of Movement To

ContactContact Focus all efforts on finding the enemy

Make initial contact with the smallest element possible,

    consistent with protecting the force

Making initial contact with small, mobile, self-contained

forces to avoid decisive engagement of the main body on

ground chosen by the enemy. Doing this allows the

commander maximum flexibility to develop the situation

Task organize the force and movement formations to deploy

and attack rapidly in any direction Keep forces postured within supporting distances to

    facilitate a flexible response

    Maintain contact once gained

Forces are organized to provide all aroundsecurity

    Locate/Fix enemy

Normally use advance, flank, and rear guards Security forces move far enough ahead to

provide enough time and space to react

Advance and flank guards perform continuousreconnaissance to the front and flanks

    Security Forces bypass/breach obstacles

Normally leaders position themselves wellforward during the movement to contact

Infantry uses two techniques for conducting the

    movement to contact:

Search and Attack: Used when the enemy forces are

dispersed, the enemy is expected to avoid contact, or

to deny the enemy movement in an area, enemy

    location is relatively unknown

Approach March: Used when the enemy is expectedto deploy using relatively fixed offensive or defensive

formations, enemy approximate location is known

Leaders use multiple squads and fireteams coordinating their actions to makecontact with the enemy.

Platoons find the enemy then fix and finishhim

    Search and Attack uses patrolling

techniques with the requirement toconduct hasty or deliberate attacks onceenemy is found

    Planning considerations include: METT-T

    Decentralized execution (PL coordinates squads)

Mutual support (PL must respond to contact with other squads)

    Length of Operations (maybe continuous)

    The soldiers load (requires stealth)

    Resupply and MEDEVAC

Positioning of key leaders and personnel

    Employment of key weapons

Requirement for patrol bases The concept for entering the zone of action

The concept for linkups (ALL leaders must know how they willlinkup once contact is made)

Platoons are part of a larger unit and act

as the flank, advance, or rear guard, or

even part of the main body

The concept for this technique is make

contact with the smallest element possible

This allows the commander to decide to

    maneuver or bypass

    Advance Guard:

Finds the enemy and locates gaps, flanks,

and weaknesses in the enemy defense

Attempts to make contact on ground of its

own choosing, gain surprise, and develop the

    situation

Operates within the range of the main bodysindirect fire weapons

Flank or Rear Guard: The entire platoonmay act as the flank or rear guard for abattalion. The Platoon:

Moves using appropriate movementtechniques and formations.

Maintains the momentum of the main body

    Provides early warning

    Destroys enemy reconnaissance

Prevents direct fire or observation of the mainbody
