LA GRANGE PARK – NazarethAcademy hosted its annual Call to theHeart Mass and Reception on Jan. 25.

At the event, Nazareth gave specialrecognition to Thom and Ann Seraf-in of La Grange Park. The couple washonored with the 2015 Call to HeartAward for their philanthropy towardNazareth Academy.

According to a news release, Thomand Ann Serafin have been longtimesupporters of Nazareth Academy, aswell as the community of La GrangePark. Their two sons, Mitchell andMatthew, are both graduates of theschool. Even though both have gradu-ated, the couple continues to supportthe schools, the release stated.

During the event, Nazareth stu-dents and benefactors were able togather and listen to stories, as well asshare them.

Prom NightNazareth Academy will host their

third Prom Night for Teens with Dis-abilities from 7 to 9 p.m. March 7, ac-cording to a news release.

The prom will be hosted in theschool’s Springer Hall and dininghall.

The evening’s event is free and cou-ples are welcome, although dates arenot required. Each guest to attend willbe accompanied by a Nazareth student,who will act as a buddy, according tothe release.

The idea to host such a prom was in-spired by the relationship and coordi-nated efforts of ASPIRE of Illinois andthe Nazareth Friends in Service andHospitality Service Team in 2011.

The Steering Committee for FISHProm, including seniors Amy Burke ofWestern Springs, Maggie Harringtonof Clarendon Hills, Megan Heurich ofChicago and Rebecca Letcher of Brook-field, along with the support of the Naz-areth Student Council, has been plan-ning this event all year.

In all, between planners, escortsand the students who run the event,more than 80 Nazareth students willparticipate in the 2015 prom.

Ten RadioShack stores in thewestern suburbs are slated for pos-sible closure after the technologyretailer filed for Chapter 11 bank-ruptcy Thursday, according to astatement and information on theRadioShack website.

The affected local stores areamong the nearly 1,800 possible clo-sures of RadioShack’s 4,000 compa-ny-owned U.S. locations.

RadioShack reached an agree-ment to sell up to 2,400 of its U.S.company-owned stores to StandardGeneral, which plans to work withSprint to establish a “store withina store” presence in up to 1,750 ofthe acquired stores, according to thewebsite.

Dealer franchise stores were notincluded in the bankruptcy filing orStandard General agreement, thestatement said.

There are 76 Illinois stores on thepossible chopping block.

It has been a tough past twoyears for brothers Matt andPhil Janowiak, of Indian HeadPark.

First, they lost their moth-er to kidney disease, and theirfather passed away from com-plications from a stroke hesuffered soon after his wife’spassing.

Hinsdale Humane Society offers free spaying, neuteringSUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Hu-mane Society, which also serves theLa Grange area, is offering free spayand neutering vouchers throughoutthe month of February, the society an-nounced in a news release.

The promotional vouchers are be-ing offered in conjunction with the

Humane Society of the United StatesWorld Spay Day, which is an annualcampaign to draw attention to spayingand neutering animals as a way to saveanimals’ lives.

The voucher can be picked up atparticipating area veterinary offic-es.

According to the Humane Societyof the United States, some 6 million to

8 million dogs and cats enter U.S. shel-ters each year. Of those dogs and cats,between 3 million and 4 million willbe euthanized because there are notenough homes to house them.

Spaying and neutering dogs andcats saves lives by helping limit petpopulations, Jenny Vlazny, HinsdaleHumane Society’s operations managersaid in the release.

La Grange police find possible connection in shootings, gangsBy MATTHEW [email protected]

LA GRANGE – La Grange policeinvestigators are running down leadsand making new connections in theirinvestigations into two recent shoot-ings on the village’s east side.

According to Investigator RobertWardlaw, the two shootings are show-ing signs they were related and the vic-tims may have ties to area gangs.

“It’s all of concern to us,” Wardlawsaid. “We’re looking into gangs thatmight be involved.”

A 16-year-old was shot in the legNov. 21 near Calendar and Sawyeravenues. Police responded to the areaafter receiving a report of shots firedbut could not locate anyone. They laterlearned the teen was shot after he wentto La Grange Memorial Hospital seek-ing treatment for a gunshot wound.

On Jan. 26, police responded to multi-ple reports of shots fired in the zero to 100block of Washington Avenue, about twoblocks from the Nov. 21 shooting. Whenpolice arrived, they found a 22-year-oldman shot in the abdomen. He was takento Loyola University Hospital in May-wood for surgery and released that night.

Investigators, on Jan. 30, said theywere continuing to investigate the shoot-ings separately and had no evidence

they were connected or gang related.On Friday, investigators said new

evidence and leads pointed to a possi-ble connection between the two victimsand there was evidence both shootingswere related to gang activity.

“We’re trying to get more confirma-tion,” Wardlaw said. “We’re having is-sues, too, if it’s a specific to a gang. It’shard to say.

“At this point, we believe we’velinked the two [cases] together.”

Wardlaw said the victims in bothcases have continued to be uncooper-ative with police. Police have tried tomake contact with the 22-year-old vic-tim multiple times since the shooting,but he had not responded.

Both men have connections to areastreet gangs, Wardlaw said. He added itwas still unclear the degree to which theshootingswere connected to street gangs.

Police said the community hashelped their investigation. Tips fromresidents have given them more towork on in both cases and they are

continuing to follow up on those leads.Wardlaw said the department wel-comed tips and reports from residents,no matter how small, and said theycould be given to police anonymously.

Increased signs of gang activityPolice noted a small increase in

gang activity in the area around theshootings since the second shootingwas reported.

ALaGrangepoliceofficerwas flaggeddown Jan. 29 by a resident who reportedon Jan. 28 a white Jeep drove down thezero to 100 block of Washington Avenuewith someone shouting “King Love” outthe window. The phrase is a known slo-gan of the Latin Kings street gang.

Two incidents of graffiti, which po-lice said were gang related, were re-ported Thursday. Gang graffiti wasreported at 7:42 a.m. Thursday on abuilding in the 200 block of Washing-ton Avenue and at 7:53 a.m. on a vacantbuilding that once housed a church inthe 200 block of Sawyer Avenue.

Wardlaw said the department wasstill attempting to connect the graffitiwith a specific gang.

Increased reportsAnalysis of LaGrange police reports

Friday showed an increase in the num-

ber of reports coming from the area ofthe shooting. Wardlaw said the depart-ment has seen a slight increase in thenumber of reports they are receivingfrom residents in the neighborhood.

In addition, Wardlaw said the de-partment has continued its increasedpatrol presence in the area.

Wardlaw said La Grange investiga-tors remain as the lead investigators inboth cases, but the department has re-ceived assistance from the Major CaseAssistance Team and from the SouthSuburban Major Crimes Task Force.Both organizations use detectives fromarea police departments with major in-vestigations, Wardlaw said.

Shall I share my favorite censorship story?Occasionally people decide something is not only unfit for

their own reading or consumption but also unfit for everybodyelse’s, too. At a public library that I used to work at, severalpatrons got it into their collective heads that we should removeone of the Shelly DuvallFairy-Tale Theater videosfrom our shelves. The filmin question was starringBernadette Peters in a dualrole as both Sleeping Beautyand a wicked princess tryingto waylay the good prince played by Christopher Reeve.

I didn’t have a video player, but as a good librarian I wantedto see it for myself, so I took it to mymother’s house to view. Mymother was curious so she sat down to watch it with me. Thescene in question depicts the wicked princess trying to trap theprince. The two get into a discussion of what they do for amuse-ment. The prince says, “I like to give to the poor.” She feigns ig-norance. He explains he has a lot more than he needs so he likesto take the extra stuff and give it away to those who really needit. She insists he demonstrate with the extra pearls on her gown.

But when he reaches out to take one, she says, “No, no, yourhands are too rough. Take them with your lips.”

Now, mind you, he never does this because at that momentthey are interrupted. Nevertheless, this was enough to upsetthis sensitive group of patrons.

I pointed out the scene and said, “That’s it. That’s the partthey want to get the video withdrawn from the kids’ depart-ment for.”

My mother considered this information for a moment andthen said, “I can understand that. Kids might think it’s OK toput beads in their mouths.”

I laughed, “No, no, Mom, think smutty.”She still didn’t get it, which I think just goes to show, there’s

no substitute for a pure heart. The best books and movies forchildren work on multiple levels. So it’s not that we didn’tunderstand our would-be censors’ point. But in our experience,when families watch that video together, the adults let out witha short laugh or smirk of recognition, but it sails right over theheads of the little guys. Rest assured, both kids and adults get itright away, though. She’s wicked!

COD fails taxpayersAs a member of this community, taxpay-er and concerned citizen, I am horrified atthe way six [College of DuPage] trusteeshave conducted themselves. It makesme wonder … what “benefits” they weregranted (by President Breuder) to awardthe outrageous payout to him. I’ve spokento some friends about the mess and theyseem to feel that they are helpless to“do anything to change it,” so why getupset? In a way I can understand that;however, if we all sit back and do nothing,issues such as this will continue to go“unchecked” and our taxes will continueto increase because nobody is objecting.... There must be something that canbe done to stop the outrageous payoutto Breuder and also stop his name frombeing plastered across a building. That isa slap in the face to this community!

Lemont parking problemI’m a resident of Lemont, just west ofState Street and the apartments in the900 block of State Street. It’s an older,narrower street and we’ve had prob-lems with parking the past two years,sometimes up to 10 cars lining bothsides, limiting access for school buses,snowplows, fire trucks, etc. There’s notenough parking by the apartments. … andthere’s two to three families in some ofthe buildings. … They could use PeifferStreet. It’s newer and wider, and theycould put up no parking signs within 100feet of the stop signs at Peiffer and Sing-er or parking for residents of Singer onlysigns. Maybe that’s a solution. I hope thevillage takes notice and action.

Harley Caithamer,1921-2015, Born on afarm near St. CroixFalls, Wisconsin,Harley attended aone-room school,one of threestudents in firstgrade. His father,James, worked insteel construction,so the family moved

often. His mother Vlasta LukesCaithamer was a teacher. By thetime he finished second grade,Harley had attended four differentschools. The family moved to Illinois“just in time to encounter the GreatDepression”.Following graduation fromMorton

High School and a summer playingsemi-pro baseball, he was draftedinto the army. Beginning at theAnzio Beachhead, he served withthe 45th Division as a BrowningAutomatic Rifleman and a lightmachine gunner. Going throughItaly, France, and Germany(Bamberg, Nuremberg, Dachau,Munich) he earned four battle stars,a beach arrowhead, and a bronzestar.After returning home, Harley

married the love of his life, MiriamOre Caithamer, and raised adevoted daughter, Beth. Thankfulfor surviving the war, Harley lived alife of service to others and to God.He attended Moody Bible Institutetaking music courses, sang in choirsfor 70+ years, enjoyed playing thepiano, teaching Sunday School, andvolunteering summers to the RuralBible Mission.He had a passion for education

and science. At age 42, afterworking various jobs, he enteredChicago Teachers College as a full-time student and earned aBachelors and Masters degree. AnEnglish major with an interest inscience, he took courses as well astaught 6th grade Earth Science, 7thgrade Life Science, and 8th gradePhysical Science in Westchester,Illinois.After retiring from teaching,

Harley shared his passion byvolunteering for more than 20 yearsat the Museum of Science andIndustry in Chicago. He helped inthe library answering “Think Tank”type inquiries from teachers,students, and others all over theworld; He served on the VolunteerCouncil, Membership, HelpingHands, and Special Projects. He alsoread, gathered, and organizedinformation in various science areasto maintain the “What's New”notebooks in Science Connections.In 2013, Harley and Miriammoved

from LaGrange, IL, to Newtown

Rauner unveils broad agendain the State of State address

Republican Gov. BruceRauner in his first State of theState address laid out a broadagenda to revitalize Illinois’economy that focuses signifi-cantly on stripping the powerand influence of labor unions.

Rauner in his 40-minutespeech to state lawmakersFeb. 4 called his proposals“bold” and “aggressive” but“necessary and very doable”to repair the state’s deep fi-nancial troubles, and make Il-linois more competitive withother states.

“The time is now for allof us, Republicans and Dem-ocrats, to do big things – theright things – for the people ofour great state.Now is the timefor bold and decisive action. Itis make or break time for theLand of Lincoln,” Rauner said.

ButwhileRauner preachedthe need for bipartisan coop-eration to stop what he repeat-edly called on the campaigntrail the state’s downward spi-ral, he almost certainly willfind a number of his propos-als, especially those bluntingorganized labor, a very hardsell to Democratic lawmakerswhom hold House and Senatesupermajorities.

He outlined some of hisproposals in his address, and

others in an accompanyinglist of priorities he called “TheIllinois Turnaround.” He toldlawmakers they should con-sider the plan as a whole rath-er than a list of separate ini-tiatives, and that while theywould find things they don’tlike, they will find a numberof things they do.

Among his top prioritiesfor economic growth are im-plementing more significantworkers’compensationreform,tort reform, implementing truecompetitive bidding for publicworks projects while limitingprevailing wage requirements,and allowing local voters to de-cide by referendum whether ornot local government employ-ees should be forced to join aunion or pay dues as a condi-tion of employment – Raunerdubbed the localized right-to-work areas “employee empow-erment zones.”

“Employee empowermentzones will increase jobs forresidents, increase economicactivity for local businessesand generate more tax dollarsfor local governments. It’s awin-win-win proposal,” Raun-er said.

Rauner also seeks to limitorganized labor’s influenceby extending the existing banon political contributions forbusinesses with state con-tracts to all organizations

with a collective bargainingagreement with state govern-ment, and organizations fund-ed by entities receiving stateMedicaid funds.

In exchange for the busi-ness reforms, Rauner said hesupports a plan to increasethe state’s minimum wagefrom $8.25 to $10 an hour, butphased in over seven years.

While Rauner in his speechdid not address the state’s $111billion unfunded pension lia-bility – a 2013 reform bill isawaiting an Illinois SupremeCourt ruling regarding its con-stitutionality – his prioritieslist includedaproposal tomovestate employees into a new tierof benefits or into 401(k)s whileprotecting the pension benefitsthey have accumulated to date.Another proposal seeks to givestate government employeesmerit-based raises.

A number of Rauner’s pro-posals are aimed at the locallevel, such as lowering theproperty tax burden on Illi-nois homeowners. trol and are crushing middle-class fam-ilies. Illinois’ high property taxes haveskyrocketed because state and localgovernments have been unable or un-willing to control their own spending.We must empower taxpayers to takecontrol of their property tax bills by giv-ing them greater ability to control localgovernment spending,” Rauner said.

Rauner also echoed previous callsfor constitutional amendments forterm limits and merging the offices oftreasurer and comptroller.

Lawmakers will meet again in twoweeks when Rauner delivers his pro-posed 2016 budget, which will give amore complete picture as to how heplans to pay for initiatives such as in-creased funding for K-12 education, andat the same time what needs to be cut.Besides a multi-billion-dollar backlog ofunpaid bills, the state faces a $6 billionbudget shortfall for the next fiscal yearbeginning July 1.Amuch-criticized 2011increase in the state income tax was al-lowed to expire Jan. 1 as promised.

While Rauner said he wants to keepincome taxes “lowand competitivewithother states” and keep the state’s flattax over a progressive one based on in-come, he wants to extend the state salestax to include a number of services. Helikelywill find pushback frommembersof his own Republican caucus, some ofwhom oppose any attempt to find morerevenue over cutting spending.

Local lawmakers reactRauner’s speech earned high praise

from local Republican legislators andeven received positive words from theother side of the aisle.

Illinois Senate Republican LeaderChristine Radogno, R-Lemont, saidshe’s encouraged by Rauner’s earlysigns of bipartisan leadership.

“It’s exciting to have a governorwho wants to work with lawmakers onlong-term solutions to the state’s prob-lems,” she said.

Radogno is particularly intriguedby the governor’s plan to freeze prop-erty taxes.

“As a suburban resident, I knowmany property owners will share myinterest in his plan to provide propertytax relief. Gov. Rauner cited propertytax rates as ‘one of the biggest imped-iments to growth,’ explaining the av-erage property tax rate has increasednearly 33 percent over the past decade.”

State Sen. Michael Connelly,R-Lisle, believes Illinois is now on apath to re-emerging as the “economicengine of the Midwest.”

“Clearly Gov. Rauner was elected tomake bold moves and take swift actionto put Illinois back on the path to fiscalsolvency and get our state’s economygoing again,” Connelly said.

Rauner’s commitment to govern-ment consolidation tapped into amajortalking point for many local officials.State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-DownersGrove, hopes the state can mirror thesuccess witnessed in DuPage County.

“The DuPage County model hasachieved an estimated $100 million intaxpayer savings,” Sandack said, “andI hope to see that effort extended state-wide so that taxpayers everywhere canexperience tax relief.”

State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park,said she was “especially encouraged”by the governor’s pledge to consolidateunits of government after shewaspart ofthe bipartisan effort in DuPage County.

Conroy also agreed with Rauner’sfocus on the state’s fiscal crisis. Shesaid she’s committed to working withRepublicans to pass a “fiscally respon-sible budget while preserving fundingfor education and other vital services.”

“I look forward to hearing the spe-cifics of Gov. Rauner’s plan and willcontinue to work with my colleaguesin the House and Gov. Rauner to findbalanced solutions to our state’s fiscalproblems,” Conroy said.

BROOKFIELD – Directlyacross from the Metra railcrossing, on the corner ofGrand Boulevard and Brook-field Avenue, sits 1-year-oldFuego, a quaint respite fromthe everyday. In a cleverlydesigned building, the tradi-tionally decorated Fuego is acantina in the truest sense, ahandy place to stop for a mar-garita or a cold beer and sometasty Mexican classics.

My friend and I grabbeda small table by one of theexpansive windows in the re-laxed space accented by stone.

We began our meal with abasket of light and salty chipsand salsa, and an order of theCeviche de Fuego, a chilledblend of chopped shrimp,tomatoes, onions, peppers,cilantro and lime – lots oflime. Elegantly served in a tallmartini glass, the seafood dishwas a refreshing and tastystart to our experience.

I opted for the carnitadinner, featuring slow-roastedpork sauteed with onions tocreate some oh-so-yummycaramelized edges. It’s like theMexican answer to a classicpulled pork, with complex sea-sonings and just enough bite.

My friend ordered the chilirelleno dinner, a fresh pobla-no pepper filled with Mexicancheeses. It was enclosed in aflaky crust, similar to a puffpastry, baked to a goldenbrown.

But the real star was thehomemade ranchero sauce.Smoky and rich, this blend oftomatoes, peppers and herbsis cooked a long time – until itturns thick, deep red and deli-cious. (The chef really shouldbottle the sauce and sell it atthe bar.)

And although we werestuffed, the dessert menu wascalling, so we ordered thechurro bites. They were deca-dent and sweet, fried crisp andcovered in a syrupy cinnamonsugar, with warm chocolatesauce for dipping.

A variety of classic Mex-ican favorites, from tacos toflautas, rounds out the menuat Fuego. Quench your thirst

with a margarita, house-madesangria or one of many greatlocal craft beers at the fullbar.

Letting Fuego live up to itsname – the Spanish word forfire – you can warm up thiswinter with homemade soupsor try the chili prepared with

both beef and chorizo. Theonline menu also highlightslunch specials.

The service was friend-ly and personable, and therestaurant’s location juststeps from the train shouldserve it well. When warmweather finally returns, patio

seating will beckon commut-ers and lovers of Mexicanfood to outdoor tables for arelaxing afternoon or eve-ning.

The Mystery Diner is anewsroom employee at Sub-urban Life Media. The diner’sidentity is not revealed tothe restaurant staff before orduring the meal. Only positivedining experiences will resultin published reviews.

LA GRANGE – After con-tributing to the Lyons Town-ship girls gymnastics team’sback-to-back state champion-ships, Kelly Ryser couldn’tthink of anything else but com-ing back for more as a senior.

“[Not returning] reallydidn’t cross my mind,” Rysersaid. “That probably wouldhave been the easy way outthis year. I wouldn’t havewanted that.”

On Friday, Ryser earnedfour top-five medals as the Li-ons rolled to the LT regionaltitle with a season-best pointtotal and advanced to the Hins-dale Central Sectional at 6 p.m.today. The Lions can automat-ically return to state by win-ning the sectional.

LT senior Kelsy Kurfirstwon the all-around (38.725),vault (9.8), balance beam (9.675)and uneven parallel bars (9.65)with season highs, and alsowon floor exercise (9.6).

Ryser and freshmen SarahHalm and Julia Cozzi qualifiedfor sectionals in the all-aroundand all four events. FreshmanSonia Slusarczyk (vault, beam)and junior Natalie Cozzi (un-even bars) also were sectionalqualifiers.

LT’s regional score was sec-ond highest in the state anda season best by nearly twopoints. The regional was re-scheduled from Feb. 2 after theheavy snowfall.

“A season-high score withstill some room for improve-ment and we learned a lot,”LT coach Kari Karubas said.“There’s been more to balancethan just gymnastics so I’mproud of us and the fact that wekept our head above water.”

Ryser and Kurfirst havebeen LT’s only competing mem-bers from the state teams. Se-nior Olivia McGann has beensidelined the whole season afterlabrum surgery. Ryser workedtwo events the past two statemeets. As freshmen, Kurfirstand Ryser were all-aroundersfor LT’s state team.

Ryser was fourth in all-around (36.50) Friday, just shyof her season high. She wassecond on uneven bars (9.275)and fourth on beam (9.15) andfloor (9.05).

At her previous regionals,Ryser collected three medals.

“Obviously it’s a good feel-ing,” Ryser said. “I focusedmore on how can I help theteam do better. I guess the re-gional medals were a byprod-uct of that.”

Halm had season highs inall-around (third, 36.575) andthree events. She was third onuneven bars (9.175) and floor(9.15), tied with Slusarczyk forthird on vault (9.175), and wasfifth on beam (9.075). Cozziwas fifth on uneven bars(8.65).

Kurfirst is the two-time de-fending state floor champion.In her final home meet, shenearly matched her school-re-cord 38.90 all-around from lastseason.

“It’s so sad that it’s my lastcompetition in these walls, butI’m glad that it went the waythat it did,” Kurfirst said. “Ihonestly couldn’t have askedfor a better meet personallyand as a team.”

CICERO – Lyons Town-ship came to the Mortonwrestling regional hoping todominate, and it did just that.

The Lions had four region-al champions and 10 wres-tlers in total advance to theDowners Grove North sec-tional. LT won the team com-petition by nearly 70 pointsahead of second place Down-ers Grove South.

Zach Vi l larrea l (120pounds), Johnny Mologousis(145), Nick Spacek (160) andEzra Avery (170) won region-al titles. Elias Garcia (113),Tyler Zeman (132), Mac Casel-la (138), Jack Hollinger (182),FrankWalsh (195) and TaylorCurlin (220) also advanced tothe sectional.

“Definitelywhatwe expect-ed,” Spacek said. “Coach [GriffPowell] wanted us to just goout and dominate, and that’swhat we did. We’re puttingup some big bonus points andwinning what we have to.”

Spacek and Mologous-is were first-time regionalchamps while Villarreal andAvery repeated as title win-ners from a year ago. Molo-gousis was a state qualifierlast year and the sophomore ishoping to move onto the med-al podium at state this year.

“It feels good after all thehard work paid off and howI came from being happy tak-ing third last year to now,”

Mologousis said. “I want towin the sectional and hope-fully place high down state.That’s my goal right now.”

In winning the team titleat the regional, LT advancedto the team sectional compe-tition for the second year in arow. Last year the Lions wereknocked off by eventual Class3A runner-up Marist by a 35-28 score in the sectional. Theteam sectional will be afterthe individual state finals.

LT could have a betterteam this year. The 10 wres-tlers that got out of the re-gional is an improvementover last year’s eight.

First up is the DownersGrove North individual sec-tional. Mt. Carmel, St. Rita,Brother Rice, Sandburg,Marist andMarmionAcademyare someof the other top teamsthat will have wrestlers in thesectional, meaning spots atstate will be tough to come by.The top four finishers at eachweight classmove on to state.

After the regional perfor-mance, LT’s wrestlers are fullof belief.

“Confidence is definitelyup there,” Spacek said. “Youfeel good coming in and win-ning the regional.”

Hinsdale CentralOutlook: Morton’s No. 11 seed is thebest the Mustangs have had since the2010-11 season and is also the first timesince that year that theMustangswon’thave to play in a regional quarterfinal.

Still, Morton has a tough draw in aregional semifinal. TheMustangs, whohost the regional at Morton West, takeon Hinsdale Central and prolific scorerGabrielle Rush, whom is a Princetonrecruit.

The Mustangs, who finished 6-6 inthe West Suburban Gold, are led byjunior guards Maryam Wilcher, whorecently committed to Indiana State,and Chloe Maietta.

Sincethen, RB has gone 10-2, including a winagainst neighboring Lyons Township.

Sophomores Samantha Bloom,Lyndsey Hoyd and Dana Rettke havetaken up bigger roles since Dabneywent down. Bloom runs the offense atpoint guard, Hoyd is a deadly outsideshooter and Rettke uses her 6-foot-7frame to get easy baskets inside andprevent opponents from doing thesame.

TheNo. 4 seed is the best RB has hadsince moving up to Class 4A. With awin in the regional semifinal, the Bull-dogs could play a possible rematch oflast year’s regional final against Ken-wood, which they lost 69-55.
