    Policeman: Hey! Stop your car.

Roma: (Stopping her car, surprisingly). What is the matter?

Policeman: You have violated the traffic rule.

Roma: What are you saying? I havent committed any offence.

Policeman: Dont tell a lie. You should have stopped your car at red light but you skipped it.

Such negligence may cause an accident.

Roma: (Realizing her mistake) Oh! I am extremely sorry. In fact the crossing was free and I was in a

hurry, thus I failed to notice the red light.

Policeman: But you are expected to drive carefully and cautiously on the road. You cant endanger your

    or others life.

Roma: Would you please pardon me this time?

Policeman: How can we allow persons like you to create chaos on the roads. Traffic police is for your

safety. I am making out your challan. Take out your driving licence.

Roma: (Showing her driving licence) It is my driving license. Please try to understand me. I didnt commit

mistake intentionally. I assure I will be more careful in future.

Policeman: Please dont try to argue, and give me $....... It is the minimum penalty.

Roma: (Seriously) Try to realize my helplessness. I have only 3 dollars in my purse, I may need it. My

friend is seriously ill. I am going to her house to enquire after her health.

Policeman: Okay, okay..... you are being pardoned this time. Henceforward follow the traffic

    rules carefully.

Roma: (Having a sigh of relief) Thanking you very much.

Christmas is for most of us a time for a break from work, for family and friends, for presents, turkey and

crackers. But we should not lose sight of the fact that these are traditional celebrations around a great

religious festival, one of the most important in the Christian year.

Religion and culture are much in the news these days, usually as sources of difference and conflict,

rather than for bringing people together. But the irony is that every religion has something to say about

    tolerance and respecting others.

For me, as a Christian, one of the most important of these teachings is contained in the parable of the

Good Samaritan, when Jesus answers the question, Who is my neighbour?

It is a timeless story of a victim of a mugging who was ignored by his own countrymen but helped by a

foreigner, and a despised foreigner at that.

The implication drawn by Jesus is clear. Everyone is our neighbour, no matter what race, creed or

colour. The need to look after a fellow human being is far more important than any cultural or religious

    differences.

Most of us have learned to acknowledge and respect the ways of other cultures and religions, but what

matters even more is the way in which those from different backgrounds behave towards each other in

    everyday life.

It is vitally important that we all should participate and cooperate for the sake of the wellbeing of the

whole community. We have only to look around to recognise the benefits of this positive approach in

business or local government, in sport, music and the arts.

There is certainly much more to be done and many challenges to be overcome. Discrimination still

exists. Some people feel that their own beliefs are being threatened. Some are unhappy about

    unfamiliar cultures.

They all need to be reassured that there is so much to be gained by reaching out to others; that diversity

is indeed a strength and not a threat.

We need also to realise that peaceful and steady progress in our society of differing cultures and

heritage can be threatened at any moment by the actions of extremists at home or by events abroad.

We can certainly never be complacent.

But there is every reason to be hopeful about the future. I certainly recognise that much has been

    achieved in my lifetime.

I believe tolerance and fair play remain strong British values and we have so much to build on for the

    future.

It was for this reason that I particularly enjoyed a story I heard the other day about an overseas visitor to

Britain who said the best part of his visit had been travelling from Heathrow into central London on the

    tube.

His British friends were, as you can imagine, somewhat surprised, particularly as the visitor had been to

some of the great attractions of the country. What do you mean they asked? Because, he replied, I

boarded the train just as the schools were coming out.

At each stop children were getting on and off - they were of every ethnic and religious background,

some with scarves or turbans, some talking quietly, others playing and occasionally misbehaving

together, completely at ease and trusting one another. How lucky you are, said the visitor, to live in a

country where your children can grow up this way.

I hope they will be allowed to enjoy this happy companionship for the rest of their lives.

A Happy Christmas to you all.

Here the speech carefully and complete the following statements.

    A. Christmas is for most of us a time for a _____11_____, for family and friends, for presents,_____12_____. But we should not lose sight of the fact that these are traditional celebrations

"When we've finally gotten serious about global warming, when the impacts are reallyhitting us and we're in a full worldwide scramble to minimize the damage, we should have

war crimes trials for these bastards - some sort of climate Nuremberg." -David Roberts,Gristmill, Grist Magazine, September 19, 2006

So said Grist Magazine staff writer David Roberts of those who question looming globalwarming doom. They are war criminals and should be tried and prosecuted the same way asNazi Germany leaders. In his words, global warming doubters "have blood on their hands"

and are "morally if not legally, criminals."

Less abrasive were the recent remarks of British Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks who, after

announcing to a gathering of environment ministers that "humankind is in a race for lifeagainst global warming," called doubters "the equivalent of the Flat Earth Society."

And so goes the nature of the debate on the complex issue of global climate change-not so

complex for those who know without question that humans are destroying planet Earth. The

debate is now over, according to the world's top science experts Al Gore and Britain'senvironmental minister. Those who question if that's a fact are no longer simply nay-sayersor skeptics. They are flat-earthers, "known liars," and war criminals.

Worse than the name-calling, environmentalists, the media, and even scientists areattempting to stifle other scientists with differing opinions on climate change. Last fall, staffmembers of the Sierra Club in Charlotte, North Carolina blasted the museum Discovery

Place for bringing in Richard Lindzen, a distinguished professor of atmospheric sciences atMIT, to speak on the uncertainties of global warming.

The Charlotte Observershowed similar disdain for differing points of view. The paperdevoted a mere 252 words to Dr. Lindzen's two-hour lecture. Yet the paper's editorial,

which scolded the museum for playing "partisan politics," ran 426 words.

Interestingly, the Charlotte Observerdid end up running some, albeit unplanned, text thefollowing day. Turns out the editorial's claim-and premise-that the forum was "sponsored by

a politician with an anti-global warming agenda" who influences the museum's budget wasinaccurate. The "clarification" said that the event was actually sponsored by the CharlotteArea Science Network and the science society Sigma Xi, and that the noted politician'sfoundation "didn't sponsor the museum forum."

Intolerance for opposing views could also describe James Hansen, director of NASA's

Goddard Institute of Space Studies, when he failed to show up at a House Government

Reform Committee's hearing on global warming last July. By his own admission, Hansen

"would have gotten out of his sickbed to testify to Congress... if they were ready to dealresponsibly with the matter. But obviously they are still in denial, inviting contrarians to

'balance' the science of global warming."

Today, on this international day of action, I speak of a problem that is hidden away from our eyes. Child

labor, that most insidious form of worker exploitation, that turns a helpless child into another cog in the

machine of the global economy. It is something most of us may not know much about, but which the

staff of the World Trade Organization knows perfectly well occurs, and they are consciously and willfully

ignoring the plight of child laborers in their runaway pursuit of profits, no matter what the cost. Imagine

your child, or one you care about, forced to work long hours under hellish conditions for the profit of a

far-off CEO. Even the coldest heart must find this picture shocking. But the hearts of the WTO leaders

    must be colder than ice.

In their undemocratic show trials, the WTO has consistently ruled against anything that is considered a

barrier to "free trade", such as laws protecting children from exploitation. According to WTO policy, it isillegal for a nation to ban or boycott a product for how it is made, even if it is made by children or slaves,

such as soccer ball industry of Pakistan. Nations can even be punished by fine for refusing to buy

products made by children! The WTO is an organization without one iota of conscience. It's support of

so-called "trade liberalization" is a shallow euphemism for beating every ounce of profit they can get out

of workers, no matter what their age or the conditions they work on.

International conglomerates are in a race to the bottom, chasing the lowest price of production and

highest profit. . If using indentured servants or children lowers the bottom line, they will do so, with the

support of the WTO. Hiding behind the closed doors of their Seattle conference the WTO keep out of

sight the true consequences of their policies. It is only by feigning ignorance that they can deny facingthe guilt for their crimes of globalization - Children forced to work in sweatshops. The hard won human

rights victories concerned citizens have won in the United States can be callously brushed aside by the

World Trade Organization, which usurps any of our nation's laws it sees fit. The child labor restrictions

Mother Jones and Cesar Chavez spent their lives working for can be repealed with merely the stroke of a

pen by some obscure WTO beuracrat.

We have gathered here on the common today to resist the WTO on behalf of every child in every nation,

who at this very moment toils bound to a sewing machine a sweatshop, watching their childhood

disappear into sewing petty luxuries for the wealthy. Children who have never had a chance to play, or

get an education, or simply enjoy the exuberance of youth, and they never will unless we act. Laboring

under the threat of starvation and abuse, to stuff the pockets of corporations and the clothing racks of

our malls. The WTO places dollars, pieces of printed paper, above the lives and spirits of poor children.

May all of us gathered here today let those in the sweatshops know that that their cries for liberation

has not gone unheard, and are now being stated and amplified in words of each activist, sign, and

publication against globalization, until their voices resonate thoughout our nation, in every sweatshop,

and on the streets of Seattle, AS the downtrodden children and youth workers of the world exclaim in

different languages but with one voice that they will not let their overseers run rampant, that they will

not let a global economy be built upon the backs of children. Child labor must end now, along with its
