We welcome interested academicians and scholars at accredited institutions of higher learning to request permission to use The Leadership Challenge® or the LPI®: Leadership Practices Inventory® in empirical research studies. Q: How do I obtain permission to use the LPI in my research? A: Before you can begin, you MUST complete the online permissions request form. If you are a faculty member at an accredited institution of higher learning who is interested in using the Classic LPI in research projects you are conducting or a student at that institution conducting research, please complete the form here. If you are interested in using the Student LPI in your research, please complete the form here. Q: What happens after I complete the online application? A: Our office will review your application. If approved, you will be sent two copies of a letter granting you permission to utilize the LPI in either electronic or paper format. You will need to sign one copy and return to our office at the address indicated. Finally, once we’ve received confirmation that your letter has been returned, a member of our editorial team will reach out to you to help you finalize payment and access to your desired LPI product. This process usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks from the time that you complete your online application to the time that you will have been set up with access to your desired product.

Q: Who is eligible to request permission to utilize the LPI in their research?

Q: How do I obtain permission to use the LPI in my research?

A: Before you can begin, you MUST complete the online permissions request form.

If you are a faculty member at an accredited institution of higher learning who is interested in using the Classic LPI in research projects you are conducting or a student at that institution conducting research, please complete the form here.

If you are interested in using the Student LPI in your research, please complete the form here.

Q: What happens after I complete the online application?

A: Our office will review your application. If approved, you will be sent two copies of a letter granting you permission to utilize the LPI in either electronic or paper format. You will need to sign one copy and return to our office at the address indicated. Finally, once we’ve received confirmation that your letter has been returned, a member of our editorial team will reach out to you to help you finalize payment and access to your desired LPI product. This process usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks from the time that you complete your online application to the time that you will have been set up with access to your desired product.

Q: What products are available for use in my research and what is the corresponding cost?

A: • LPI 360 Online $10/token. An observer-based tool for leaders and managers at all

levels in an organization that incorporates the LPI Self instrument. • LPI Self Online $5/token. A 30-item assessment that provides a way for individual

leaders to measure the frequency of their own leadership behaviors on a 10-point frequency scale

• LPI Self (print) $15.00 • LPI Observer (print) $10.00 Note: Prices for the print versions of the LPI Self & Observer indicate a one-time payment that allows the user to make as many print copies as needed for their survey. The results of these surveys are hand scored by the user. If you do not wish to hand score, the facilitator’s guide for the LPI may be purchases for $199.00. This allows the user access to the scoring software (used to tabulate and generate reports from the print survey feedback), administration tips, and content to help the user dig deeper into the results of the survey and their meaning. Q: Can I utilize the LPI survey questions in an outside software program such as Survey Monkey or Zoomerang? A: The short answer: Yes. However, we strongly encourage that researchers utilize the proprietary LPI Online platform that we have steeply discounted to help researchers get the absolute most out of their results at a price they can afford. This also ensures that all tenants of the permissions guidelines are adhered to during the research process.

On a case by case basis, there may be an opportunity to add multiple essay-style questions to the end of the survey if needed.

If you decide to move forward with outside software, please be aware that this decision can add an additional 1-2 weeks to the approval process. There is a one-time fee of $1,000 USD to cover the permissions cost of outside LPI usage. That fee is payable to John Wiley & Sons, Inc.by check only. Checks can be mailed to: Wiley c/o Ryan Noll One Montgomery, Suite 1200 San Francisco, CA 94104 Once the check is received, our legal office will generate a second permissions letter that allows for outside use in your requested software program. Please note that you still must complete the online application form for our records.

Q: Can I edit or alter the LPI questions within my survey?

A: No! The language of the LPI is based off decades of research, and is specifically worded with that research in mind.

Q: What languages are the LPI available in?

A: The LPI Online is available in English, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Latin American Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese.
