The LUX Award is a distinguished prize conferred annually by LUX Magazine, the official publication of the Lighting Industry Association. With a circulation base of 10,000 plus readers in Europe, LUX is widely acclaimed as the authoritative publication of the lighting industry. Each year, LUX nominates the year's best lighting products, projects, and companies leading innovation and change. The magazine’s annual LUX Awards are also highly regarded as benchmark prizes for the international lighting industry.

The LUX Award juries praised LOYTEC's efforts in constructing an intelligent lighting control system for the Manchester Airport. They were convinced that from the perspective of energy efficiency, this project should be recognized as an outstanding intelligent energy-saving lighting project. The juries pushed LOYTEC to the forefront of more than 200 nominees to become the top prize winner.

The intelligent lighting solution implemented at Manchester Airport achieved significant energy-saving results. All three air terminals utilized LED lighting to replace their existing energy-intensive lamps to regis-ter an impressive 62% in energy-savings. Pursuing an even bigger energy-saving margin, the airport went further to introduce the L-DALI control system, which added another 63% in energy-savings. The overall solution saves Manchester Airport up to 89% in lighting energy, which is equivalent to an annual 7 million kWh—a remarkable achievement.

LOYTEC's intelligent lighting control system owes its impressive performance to a dedication to development, as well as its accumulated years of field experience. As early as a decade ago, LOYTEC had already rolled out its DALI lighting control solution, and ever since it has accumulated many years of valuable experience in design and implementation. Beginning in 2013, LOYTEC helped implement the first stage of intelligent lighting control system for the Manchester Airport. After achieving significant success at the first stage, LOYTEC began on the second stage, which incorporated the flight information system for even greater energy savings.

LOYTEC's lighting control system is fully integrated with the systems at Manchester Airport, achieving 89% in energy savings.

The first stage of the lighting improvement plan for Manchester Airport was focused on providing a modern-ized DALI lighting system for the airport’s Terminal 2, while integrating features such as constant light control and presence detection. Owing to the tremendous success of the first stage, the lighting control solution was extended to both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, accompanied by a replacement of existing luminaries by an LED lighting solution to reduce energy consumption.

Jörg Bröker, the LOYTEC L-DALI product manager, remarked that LOYTEC's lighting control solution has incorpo-rated many advanced concepts, which differentiates it from other lighting control systems on the market. As proven by numerous field applications, the L-DALI products do a far better job than others, as it fully integrates other systems within its management scope. For example, the L-DALI system at Manchester Airport is linked to the BACnet-based visualization system, and further integrated with the airport flight information system. Not only is it coupled with the infrastructure of the existing building management system, but it also interacts with other systems to yield a more intelligent control capability to achieve more energy savings.

The fundamental principal behind intelligent lighting controls and intelligent building controls is to ensure energy use only as required. The project included the installation of DALI occupancy/daylight sensors in all areas of the Manchester Airport, together with field intelligent processors. If no human presence is detected in a specific area, lights in that area are turned off automatically. In addition, with the extensive use of natu-ral daylight, energy consumption can be drastically reduced. Once the system was integrated with the Manchester Airport's flight information system (Chroma), the lighting scheduling operation could be adjust-ed more accurately according to real-time flight movements for even greater energy savings. From this stage on, the lighting set point levels could be intelligently adjusted based on real-time flight movements, optimizing lighting efficiency.

The L-DALI lighting control system, from sensor level to controller level, is entirely based on open protocols, namely BACNet and DALI, and for maximum flexibility to meet future expansion needs. In addition to lighting control, the web-based solution allows information access anytime anywhere. Besides complete graphic applications, the system also provides energy monitor-ing and detailed reports on device status and failure condi-tions, right down to the individ-ual ballast/sensor level, which is a favorite feature for on-site maintenance personnel.

This large project lasted for three years and was successfully completed with the joint efforts of the LOYTEC Competence Center Calon and the company Building Environment Control. LOYTEC worked together seamlessly with its partners to overcome challenges and deliver the project, demonstrating not only LOYTEC's technical ability, but also close cooperation with its system integrator partner. Hans-Jörg Schweinzer, LOYTEC CEO, cheer-fully remarked that this award represents not only an affirmation of LOYTEC's products and technologies, but also of LOYTEC's ability to execute such a large project as a dependable partner for system integrators. Looking to the future, LOYTEC will continue to promote its field-proven lighting solutions to benefit the world.

The 21st Quality Diagnosis (QD) Conference took place in Delta’s Dongguan and Wujiang factories at the end of 2016, where the Delta Smart Manufacturing (DSM) Project reported outstanding results. Delta's top management, business units and regional heads expressed appreciation and factory managers valued the opportunity to improve their factories.

With the support of Delta Electronics CEO Cheng Ping over the past year, Delta has proactively upgraded its factories with the DSM project to develop smart equipment, smart production lines and smart factories. The goal is to reduce direct labor by 90% within five years while improving produc-tivity. Even with such a challenging goal, it took only one year for the factories to make substantial achievements as demonstrated at this QD Conference. Delta expects that 30% of direct labor will be reduced by the end of this year.

In this issue’s "About DSM", we feature a special interview with Delta's CEO Cheng Ping, where we ask him to share how Delta enhances its competitiveness through smart manufacturing.

Hearts first, Smart Manufacturing together

Delta's top management, business units, and regional heads attend QD21.

"I really haven’t done a lot." Cheng Ping humbly said at the beginning of the interview. "Factories mean hard work. A smart upgrade has to be done under the difficult situation of no manpower replacements but with a requirement to reduce cost." Cheng Ping said the results this time were due to the close collaboration of Mr. Du's consulting team, the factories, the automation department, IT and DRC. A demonstration line was built step-by-step in each factory, from defining Smart Function, integrating the system design of software and hardware, integrating the automation of the produc-tion line, to the final phase of the fully developed factory. During smart manufacturing implementa-tion, cooperation between people plays an important role. The cooperation between factories and the consulting team starts with resistance and compliance, but moves to acceptance and mutual appreciation for each others’ persistent efforts reaching towards the final goal.

"Smart manufacturing is the integration of human intelligence and machines. Machines are made for repetitive, stable, and fast operations so they must be well-designed from the beginning. However, humans and machines are very different. Humans can continuously innovate, learn and evolve. Only the collaboration between humans and machines can take full advantage of smart manufacturing." Cheng Ping thought that both differences and diversity are part of Delta's DNA. However, it is necessary to enhance mutual understanding through cooperation since different roles and expertise can result in perception differ-ences. "Although it was very tough, every-one got involved." Cheng Ping believes that through DSM the factory has the opportunity to innovate, enhance its own capacity, and receive recognition.

Automation makes us fast, Smart takes us further

Seizing trends with a proactive plan

Delta has been dedicated to Industrial automa-tion (IA) for many years. Major global indus-tries deploy smart manufacturing software. For example, Siemens focuses on factory digitiza-tion and GE has a cross-field cloud software platform. Delta also develops IA smart manu-facturing solutions based on the smart manu-facturing experience of its own factories, which feature not only security, high quality, durabili-ty and high productivity, but also flexibility. Whether it’s software or hardware, everything must be standardized and modularized, just like Lego bricks, and then flexibly rebuilt to create value.

"IA must become Delta’s second pillar after our Power business." Cheng Ping thinks that years of AI development have established a certain base and brand recognition for the company and its components, equipment, and machinery automation. However, the lack of an upper-level software platform and cross-domain know-how limited its development. This is why Delta merged with Unicom—to reinforce its cross-domain know-how and to develop DRC’s Smart Manufacturing Platform (SMP). Delta has also allied with Tsing Hua University’s Innovation Center for Industrial Big Data in China and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore to establish a joint venture and R&D center for big data analysis and IoT research. Delta will be able to provide complete smart manufacturing solutions, from software and hardware integration, to the cloud and big data.

The December 2016 issue of The Economist pointed out that technological advances were important factors for manufacturing’s digitization and intelligentization. High-speed Internet, cloud computing and smarter algorithms make industrial big data easier to collect, store, and analyze. McKinsey estimates that IoT-related economic value will reach USD11 trillion by 2025, among which the manufacturing-related will account for over one third. However, Cheng Ping believes that with ever-rising labor costs, Delta will keep its leading position in manufacturing by implementing smart manufacturing at factories in South China and East China. With the development of regional economies in Europe and the Americas, Delta's deployment of smart manufacturing solutions in software and hardware, especially in cross-field applications, will further enhance the company's global competitiveness.

Delta Controls Partner Conference 2016Text by Delta Controls

The 2016 Delta Controls Partner conference held in Scottsdale, Arizona may have been our best yet. That was the feedback we received from Partners and presenters alike.

The buzz began with the launch of our conference app, DeltaLIVE! This was a first for us, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Using DeltaLIVE!, all Partners and spouses registered for the event were given pre-event mobile access to the conference itinerary, presenter bios, location maps, product discussion forums, and the very popular live social feed.

It didn’t take long for attendees to begin posting photos of their conference experiences and commenting on others. With nearly 300 people in attendance, this proved a great way to get everyone interacting and to share in a broader perspective of the confer-ence experience.

The theme of the conference was convergence. This was our first conference since joining the Delta Group, and day one focused on convergence of organizations. Presentations from our founders, Brian Goodchild and Raymond Rae, had us not only reflecting on more than 20 years of Delta Controls history, but also looking forward to new possibilities and opportunities. Our new president, Joe Oberle, gave opening and closing speeches and shared how much he has grown to admire the Delta Controls channel within a short time.

With presentations from Delta Controls, Delta Electronics, Cisco, Renesas, and Regulvar, the second and third day of the event carried the convergence theme first on to room technologies, then on to the enterprise management of buildings and communities.

Over the course of these presentations, we launched the much-anticipated integrated room controller and sensor hub — technolo-gy that learns the preferences of building occupants and optimizes their space — a ground-breaking innovation that stands to change the face of our industry.

We also launched the enteliZONE Wireless Thermostat. This has all the functionality and customizability of our standard enteli-ZONE Thermostat, alongside the flexibility of onboard WiFi and EnOcean® wireless connectivity.

It was also during these presentations that we first shared our vision of “A Delta Building,” a vision that celebrates the concept of convergence. From advanced occupancy sensing at the room level to real-time analytics across a building’s infrastructure, we shared our vision of a building that integrates the products of Delta Electronics with the Building Automation System of Delta Controls.

We were excited to share these developments. Better yet, we quickly knew that our Partners were excited about what they were hearing, as their photos of the conference PowerPoint slides started popping up in the app’s social feed!

If our Partners are excited, we know we’re on the right track. The conference is a key event for the Partnership as it informs and affects the next few years of their business. Our Partners are truly experts in their field, and we learn as much from them at these conferences as they do from us. They understand the needs and nuances of various vertical markets, and how best to apply our products. These Partner conferences provide an invaluable opportunity for us to build new relationships, strengthen existing ones, and to celebrate each other’s successes.

Delta released Financial Data Center Infrastructure Solutions to FintechText by MCISBU

In response to the global wave of Fintech and increasing popularity of digital financial services in Taiwan, on July 12, Delta held the “2016 Financial Data Center Trend Forum” to announce its financial data center infrastructure solution. Under the trend of increasingly frequent applications of big data analysis, data mining, mobile payment, cloud platform, and other IT tools, the requirements for reliability and overall performance of data centers by the heads of the information and IT equipment in the financial sector have also become more severe. With its industry-leading, end-to-end infrastructure total solution and one-stop service mode, Delta provides full services form design and planning, construction, and operation and maintenance to management and inspection for financial sector customers’ data centers and specially tailored best solutions with reliability, stability and energy saving.

Victor Cheng, Vice President and General Manager of Delta’s Power System Business Group, remarked, “Taking high-efficiency power supply and heat dissipation core technology as bases continuously, Delta develops and innovates energy-saving products and solutions; among which, the financial data center infrastructure solution is specially tailored for financial sector customers to make their information architecture and hardware equipment innovated and upgraded in line with changes in the market while having advantages such as reliability, availability, security and high efficiency in terms of operation and management.”

Charles Tsai, General Manager of Mission Critical Infrastructure Solutions Business Unit, said, “The sustainable high-reliability and high-performance operations of all types of data centers are the core issues in operations of the financial sector. In response to the huge growth in the IT system upgrades and other relevant demand from relevant applications of Fintech, many large domestic financial holding companies have explicitly requested that their data centers to be geared to international standards for operations and maintenance. Nevertheless, Delta has not only continuously invested in the R&D and innovation of data center mission critical infrastructure equipment and products, but also presented a double-digit growth of total solutions in the world’s major markets for the past five years. Especially, the business coverage in Southeast Asia, China, pan-European region, India and other markets has gradually moved from pure hardware equipment suppliers towards all-round machine room professional consultants as strategic positioning. The end-to-end and one-stop total solution promoted in recent years has been favored by financial companies.”

Additionally, in view of meaningless losses sustained for a long time often due to lack of comprehensive equipment inspection and ignoring costs of energy consumption in operations when the enterprise promotes the upgrading or transformation of the machine room, Delta is in particular the first in the industry to introduce the “Financial Data Center General Survey” program for financial companies in Taiwan. Through evaluations conducted in five major dimensions for the machine room, namely: space usage, system architecture, equipment usage, operating environment, and energy consumption, it assists customers in keeping a close eye on the life cycle of the infrastructure equipment, and also provides improvement recommendations in aspects of maintenance and monitoring to achieve the purposes of optimized efficiency and sustainable operation through various flexible and effective solutions. Therefore, Delta creates win-win situations with financial sector customers under the big wave of Fintech.

The “2016 Financial Data Center Trend Forum” held by Delta attracted more than a hundred participants including financial sector customers, potential customers and the media to enthusiastically attend the Forum.

Charging station of the year 2016 in SwedenText by EMEA

“Charging spots” or charging-stations will be a necessity and there is a positive trend. Sweden has about 2500 official charging spots but only 178 pieces are so called DC chargers. During the year Delta has introduced the Ultra Quick Charger which is capable of charging up to four cars simultaneously. It has also enough power to supply EVs with bigger batteries in the future. The evolution of battery capacity will have a big impact to what we call “quick charging”. A battery with high capacity needs very much energy to be recharged in a short time.

One of Delta’s clients, the utility provider and energy company Dala Energi, in mid Sweden has started to create a charging network in their region. Due to the fact that the charger can be upgraded they decided to go with this very future-proof product. At the end of March 2016, Delta received an order of two pieces of Quick-chargers configured with the capacity of 60 kW. This is at the moment enough for the present car-models on the market.

The chargers have been placed in the small municipals Rättvik and Leksand in the region of Dalarna, a very nice area of Sweden by the highway to the Swedish mountains. In June the chargers were installed and were commissioned very smoothly during a small opening ceremony with press and also Swedish television. This was something unique as it was the first charger of its kind installed in Sweden. The chargers have been running since then and the electricity is free of charge so far.

During the year there is a competition called “Charging station of the year 2016”. This award is instituted by the organization ELBIL Sverige, the charging platform/forum Uppladdning.nu and the EV magazine ELBILEN. The winner was Dala Energy and the Delta charging station in the municipal of Rättvik and was awarded at the Ecar expo fair in Gothenburg/Stockholm in mid-November.

Delta quick charging station has won “Charging station of the year 2016” award in Sweden.

Delta’s PV inverter technology has been successfully integrated into a conglomerate of 126 solar PV power plants located in Vandel, Denmark totalling 50.4MW in AC output capacity. A total of 1,008 units of Delta’s M50A series solar PV inverters, featuring leading efficiency of up to 98.6% and IP65-rated enclosure, support the cluster of power plants, which is expected to generate more than 71.7 million kWh of clean electricity per year, enough to power 21,500 Danish households and equivalent to an annual reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 30,940 tonnes.

Mr. Victor Cheng, vice president and general manager of Delta’s Power System Business Group (PSBG), highlighted, “As a world-class provider of energy-saving solutions, we are delighted to have our high-performance PV inverters being an integral part of such a significant renewable energy footprint project in Denmark. From 2010 to 2015, Delta’s green products and solutions have enabled energy savings for our customers of up to 17.3 billion kWh and a reduction of close to 9.2 million tonnes in carbon emissions.”

Delta’s president and general manager for EMEA region, Mr. Jackie Chang, mentioned, “This is the largest success case our PV inverters have ever achieved in the entire EMEA region, a major milestone within the remarkable track record we’ve built in the residential, commercial and utility-scale segments. The integration expertise of Delta’s service team has also been crucially beneficial for the commissioning of this project given the colossal size of this PV power plant conglomerate.”

The Danish customer recognised the outstanding features of Delta’s M50A series solar PV inverters, such as their impressive energy conversion efficiency of up to 98.6%, their ability to have a very high DC/AC ratio to enable superior performance of the PV plant as well as their watertight IP65-rated protection given Denmark’s harsh climate conditions. String inverters offer further advantages for industrial-size PV plants due to their easy installation right under the PV panels compared to large central inverters and their integrated DC-side components to avoid costly external DC connection boxes.

The 126 solar PV plants, each with 400kW capacity, were built at a former NATO military airbase located in Vandel, Denmark. The property covers 108 hectares (over 1 square kilometre), roughly equivalent to 150 football fields. This conglomerate of PV installations will provide an expected annual generation of 71.7 million kWh of renewable energy, enough to suffice the annual power needs of approximately 21,500 local homes.

At 50.4MW, this is the largest success story for Delta's PV inverters in EMEA.

1,008 Delta M50A series solar PV inverters with efficiency of up to 98.6% support the cluster of power plants.

Knowing the urgent need for environmental protection, all members of the United Nations signed the Paris Agreement in 2016 and committed to strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change. The Chinese government realized the importance of environmental protection and has implemented a series of environmental policies regarding wastewater treatment and exhaust emissions management. The Chinese government’s environmental policies have confused many local and foreign companies, who consider making their factories green and energy-saving a big challenge.

Delta has been aware of the issues and the potential for “green business” for many years, and has been dedicated to developing and promoting green products and solutions ever since. Delta applies its green products, automation solutions and monitoring systems in its office buildings and factories to achieve energy savings and CO2 emissions reduction.

Recently, Delta assisted a leading chemical fiber company in Asia in achieving high operation efficiency and its energy-saving goals with a customized solution for wastewater treatment processes. This leading chemical fiber company is regarded as one of the world’s five biggest polyester manufacturers, with an annual capacity of over 2 million tons of polyester production. One of the company’s factories in China manages 6,000 to 10,000 tons of wastewater daily, and a second wastewater treatment plant was scheduled for construction last year.

In cooperation with Delta, the company applied Delta’s automation and monitoring solutions to the “ultra-filtering (UF)” and “reverse osmosis (RO)” processes in its factory to achieve around 50% of wastewater recycling per day, together with a reliable process automation system, real-time remote monitoring, and enhanced management efficiency. Delta’s solution also solved problems such as human error in meter reading.

The benefits delivered by Delta’s wastewater treatment solution are as follows:

Energy savings for equipment: Delta’s PLCs and AC motor drives are used to control the water pumps’ operation speed and frequency, reducing unnecessary operation time and power consumption and increasing operation / power efficiency to save energy.

Smart and Easy Operation: The DIAView SCADA system provides a variety of data visualization tools for data management; a simple and easy single button on/off switches design improves onsite operation efficiency.

Increases Facility Lifespan: An automatic module switch function helps to increase the lifespan of ultrafiltration (UF) films used during the water purification process of wastewater recycling.

Enhances Problem-solving: Built-in fault management functions quickly identify the problem and improve problem-solving and debugging efficiency.

Wastewater Recycling: Recycles 50% of wastewater per day to meet China’s new standard for recycling water. The quality of water treatment process and water purification is also improved.

Lowers Cost and Increases Productivity: Instant data analysis and remote factory monitoring optimizes management efficiency and reduces human error in meter reading.

DPC, from humble beginnings tothe new icon in Fremont

Delta Products Corporation (DPC) was the first office established by Delta Group outside of Taiwan, in 1982, in the garage of our Founder, Mr. Bruce Cheng. Since then, we’ve expanded our footprint and now has offices in major cities throughout the Americas. Headquartered in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, we’ve moved several times within the city of Fremont as we grew in size and revenue. In 2010, when we outgrew our 4405 Cushing Parkway building, we started searching and planning for a new “home”.

My Involvement with the new building projected started in October of 2010. From working with the brokers to locate and purchase the site, to hiring architects and general contractors, to working with the City of Fremont for permitting, to the many months of construction, and finally to completing this magnificent and LEED Platinum certified building we are so fortunate to work in every day. The building has an abundance of daylight, 100% fresh air, and architecturally rich details that are not only pleasing to the eye but also very functional and practical. Last but not least, we used many of our own product in the building such as the EV chargers (19 total), LED street lamps, LED high bay lights, VFD’s, and solar inverters just to name a few. We currently have about 180 employees in our location, with the capacity for around 400.

In “People” of this issue, we have invited Ruth Chao, the General Affairs Manager of DPC, to share with us how Delta has developed from an office based in a garage, into today's scale. As well as the lives of our colleagues from DPC, don’t miss it!

Since we are a Taiwanese based company in the U.S., our office incorporates the perfect balance of Eastern and Western cultures. We are hardworking and conser-vative at our jobs yet creative and fun when the time is right! We observe both American and Chinese holidays, and have monthly birthday celebrations with cake. Recently, we’ve added a mid-day stretch session, led by our own Legal Counsel by day and personal trainer by night, Gilda Defaii, and her faithful demonstrator, yours truly, me! This new activity has been very well received by the attendees and we believe it is a great way to integrate some physical activity into our otherwise sedentary office life.

A little over 8 months ago, I found myself with an offer to work for Delta Products Corporation as an HR Specialist. I was ecstatic to get to work with a global company along-side a diverse team here at Delta Americas Headquarters in Fremont, California. Delta had goals and a mission statement that I really respected and a path that I believed in. I joined on May 31st after a quick trip to Morocco and England to get in one last ‘hurrah’ before getting serious (you’ll see why I mentioned my trip in a moment). What do I do as an HR Specialist? Well, lots of things! I get to welcome our new hires and help them through their transition into Delta. I also oversee our Immigration program, help our teams here with filling their Temporary/Contractor roles, and work on special projects with our HR team. Working at Delta gives me the opportunity to know a diverse group of amazing people at different levels of the company. I appreciate the fact that I get to work cross-functionally and not just within my HR team (though they are awesome just by themselves)! Each day brings its own set of challenges and opportuni-ties, so it’s definitely never a dull or monotonous day! Outside of the office, you will always find me in “trip planning mode”. I will either have a trip already booked

that I’ll be researching for, or I’ll be researching which flight to book next. I love to travel, learn others’ stories and perspectives, and also adore exploring a new city on my own (more than likely, getting lost while I’m at it). When I don’t have my head in the clouds, then you’ll find me playing with my 2 nephews and 3 nieces, sipping coffee at a local café, or enjoying live music or art all while being with family and friends. It’s been truly a valuable experience thus far at Delta and I’m thrilled to contribute what I can to its continued success!

My name is Stephen Otis. I have been a member of the Delta Products IABG team for over 3 years. I started working for Delta in May 2013 as an appli-cation engineer. Since that time I have moved to working as a sales engineer covering part of the Western US territory. I work from my home office in Sacramento, CA and frequently am traveling across my sales territory including California, Nevada and Utah. When I’m not working I’m taking care of my two kids, one who’s 3 years old and another who is 9 months old. They are amazing but are almost like a second job!

Working as a sales engineer in the industrial automation space is great because it gives me the opportunity to see a large variety of customers and applications and work with them to try to solve their problems. I have worked on very large industrial machinery to small, highly precise medi-cal systems, to automated robotics and assembly machinery. No two projects are the same, and I love the challenge of understanding their system and working to come up with the best possible solution for them.

Working for Delta has been amazing. The company really encourages you to step outside of your comfort zone and grow as an individual as well as helping to grow the company. The team has been extremely supportive and want to help me succeed at my goals and guide me as best they can. I feel that I am given the freedom to develop my plans for work and time management that fit my territory and that is very exciting and rewarding. I look forward to continued success with Delta.

Enjoying time at the beach with family.

Taking my children's needs for schooling, I moved from the south of the basin to the north, having the renovated energy-efficient house entrusted to a real-estate broker for a good buyer.

I've read one report analyzing that in California, houses with solar panels installed have a higher market price than those with kitchens remodeled. Though my old house was not designed to host solar devices, there are still close to ten miscellaneous related energy-efficient devices such as heat pump water heater, full-heat alternator, recycling system for laundry water, DC inverter fans, LED energy-efficient light bulbs, LowE glasses, etc., which made me think that it should've been able to attract special buyers.

In the era of registration based on actual price, energy-efficient houses of such kind should still be considered as rare, with a price that enables me to solve my mortgage. The utility bill of only five thou-sands New Taiwan Dollars for the entire year should also be able to serve as some kind of evidence for new home owners to continue their efforts from such a basis in saving energy.

Market challenges for energy-efficient housingText by Wim Chang / Deputy Executive Director of DEF

Taller and more densely built buildings, in fact, are often moles in energy waste that are often ignored for metro areas.

It's inevitably a little bit in despair upon hearing this outcome, with the efforts in these few years on remodeling seeming to have been denied. Some people dislike the fact the water tank for the heat pump is occupying balco-ny space, and some buyers dislike the idea of flushing toilets using recycled water, making the act not as clean as thought to be. When the brokers passed on these opinions to me, they also said things in a very cautious manner, emphasizing that they felt surprised by the ability to save this much utility charge, but still hope to be able to revert to the original design.

The last buyers were a father and his daughter. During the chat, the father seemed quite supportive of the new trend for energy efficiency, and his daughter mentioned about having seen the book “Following Delta's Footstep in Making Green Buildings” in the book store, with just the latter one already worth of being entrusted with the task. Thus, though the broker told us that the buyer was willing to keep those related energy-efficient equipment, the heat pumping heater and the water recycling system still had to be taken down, which I could only accept quietly. After all, my wife also found these two pieces of equipment annoying, and it would be hard to force others to accept.

After transacting the house, I uploaded a picture of the last project worker taking down the heating pump, draw-ing many friends to express the shame, thinking that since the renovation has already taken place, why it is now necessary to take it down. “My old house originally retained solar water heater, but the new house owner took the solar water pipe down upon coming into this house, making an energy housing an ordinary housing again,” a friend also wrote in her comment.

Seeing related cases in other countries, I understood that should there be no other substantial incentive for the energy house to lower the cost of transaction between the selling and buying two parties, many renovations still belonged to ethical level that are still not easy to carry out under large scale in the business market. Moreover, if the government is not willing to gradually reduce its subsidy for fossil fuel to make utility rate consistent with the actual cost and to make the percentage of the regular energy cost enough for influencing decision for the transaction. Otherwise, it's probably not so easy for the idea of energy efficiency and water saving for the remodeling to become a noticeable field of study in the market for the transaction of houses.

Maybe for a while I am afraid I will not be able to use the example in California to encourage people to remodel into energy housing, as energy housing might not be as liked by people according to my own experience in selling homes. But, maybe because of this, more imaginations could be opened up, with only some policies added for guidance, so that the remodeling of buildings for saving and storing of energy will have a very big room to taken advantage of in Taiwan, and more possibilities for reduction of carbon emission can take place in Taiwan's buildings in the future.

The “Green footprint – Delta Green Buildings Exhibition” held in Huashan Creative Park last year attempts to illustrate to visitors potentials of these buildings in energy efficiency once remodeled.

Under pro-active recommendations, several groups of buyers were quickly drawn within two weeks to start offering their bids, with a prospect also not so far from the actually registered price. It's just that many potential buyers, after seeing these energy-efficient devices, unanimously requested that I move away these energy devices before I turn over this house and restore the wiring to its original shape before remodeling.

On November 8, 2016, the finals of “The Second Delta Shanghai Badminton Tournament” came to a satisfy-ing end. The 3-week tournament attracted hundreds of competitors from different departments. Whereas the competitors fiercely competed on the badminton court, they learned from each other off the court. Final-ly, the champions, first runners-up and second runners-up of the five events, i.e. Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles, were determined on the day of the finals.

Inheriting the competing spirit of the first tournament “Compete Like a Champion”, the competitors refused to reconcile themselves to falling behind and were all energetically charged along the way, from knock-outs, qualifying rounds and semi-finals to the finals. No one complained in spite of some disad-vantageous factors from time to time, such as having a flu or fever, in a poor personal state, or having great disparity between players. The players devoted themselves wholeheartedly to the matches: they mulled before they served, building up the momentum for a good game; talked over the tactics right after each scoring while encouraging one another; and made the best use of their skills during matches, running back and forth on the badminton court. The players in the doubles also showed great accor-dance, demonstrating the athletic spirit of teamwork.

In the meantime, the outstanding performances of the competitors were cheered on by the spectators. Whenever the score was close, or players hitting a phenomenal smash, or a convoluted tactic were cleverly employed, a deafening cheer would rise from the spectators. The responses from both the players and spectators allowed all the employees of Delta to forget about the pressure from work and troubles from life. They all immersed themselves in the liberated joy provided by this sport, and this also resonated with the theme of this tournament: Enjoy Badminton Together!

No matter the tension of the game, there were always some relaxing fun moments. For instance, two strangers became friends as they smiled at each other from across the net; competitors who made a mistake made a face embarrassedly; close friends teased each other about their skills. The entire tournament was filled with perspiration, applauds and laughter. Although everybody bore the spirit of “friendship first” in mind, they still privately rivalled each other, striving to give full scope to their great-est skills. In the end, all participants did the best they could and garnered good results, showing the ultimate energy and passion to everybody.

Although the tournament drew to an end, its influence and meaning are long-lasting. Badminton itself is a sport whereby we exercise and improves our health, and it also helps us develop strong persever-ance and morality. The badminton tournament provides a stage for people to amply demonstrate their skills. The tournament enriches people’s leisure life, improves the communication between colleagues, and enhances teamwork and cohesion in the company. Through the tournament, a corporate culture marked with confidence, energy, positivity and a never-give-up attitude is created.
