current law students upon completion of all required first year courses (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing).
Students may elect to apply and register for externships for 2 or 3 hours of academic credit. A student is required to work as an extern at their field placement 110 hours in order to earn 2 hours of credit. A student is required to work as an extern at his or her field placement for 165 hours to earn 3 hours of credit. This is a graded course and you may earn up to a total of 8 credits as an extern over the course of your law school career.
Judicial Externships Students may apply for a judicial externship through the Law
School to: Federal District Court Judges Federal Bankruptcy Court Judges Circuit Court of Cook County Judges (Criminal, Civil-Law,
Chancery, Mortgage Foreclosure, Child Protection, Domestic Violence Divisions)
Illinois Appellate Court 18th Judicial Circuit Court of DuPage Additionally, students may find placements through the
American Bar Association, Just the Beginning Foundation, or through personal contacts with members of the judiciary. Students may apply for externship credit with permission of the Director of Experiential Learning.
How to apply to the extern sites: For judicial sites only: Jan. 28-Feb. 4 you will be able to submit your
resume and transcript to apply for externships via symplicity. Follow the symplicity instructions handout. A few judges may require a writing sample or cover letter (these additional documents will also be submitted via symplicity).
For all other externship sites, please attend one of the information
sessions with Ms. Gough and review the requirements on the website.http://www.luc.edu/law/career/externships.html
Interview Process with Judges You must apply via Symplicity by uploading your resume and
transcript. Loyola mails your materials to the various judges. The judges contact the students they would like to interview.
We do not know the time frame the judges will use in interviewing and extending offers.
If you accept an interview with a federal judge, you must be ready to accept an offer. You can accept more than one interview, but must be ready to accept an offer from a judge immediately and cancel all other interviews.
Example Scenario: You have an interview with Judge X on Monday and Judge Y on Tuesday. Judge X makes you an offer at your interview, you must accept and cancel your interview with Judge Y.
