FINALLY … We have a Moose Head Mounted in OUR Lodge! It has been many years that the Arlington Fraternity has had the desire to display a “symbol” of our Fraternity at the Social Quarters of our Moose Lodge AND we finally received our “answer” from Moose neighbors in Maryland. Fish Fry Revisited – No. 8 (Since August 2012) Saturday, February 27th (2:00pm – 6:00pm)

This event has always been a really big crowd-pleasing, successful event for the Lodge; with over 60 members and guests attending this similar event in August 2015. The Lodge is relying on our local fishermen to do the “ice fishing” to supply our fish catches at the event (they place the fish on crushed ice in the supermarkets). We guarantee that the fish offerings of fried catfish, cod and flounder will be tasty and delicious! Furthermore, there are

some special offerings being considered for later in the day. In keeping with the “menu that always brings the crowds back to the event”, several of the sides dishes for this event will consist of macaroni & cheese, hush puppies, coleslaw, stewed tomatoes, green salad, and corn bread.

WOTM Valentine Dinner on Saturday, February 13th (6:00pm – 8:00pm)

Avoid the crowds and bring your loved one a day early to celebrate Valentine Day (especially if you have not made a reservation at a restaurant at the time of this publication). The WOTM will be serving a steak dinner at a reasonable price of $15.00. The dinner will include “a made-to-order” plate of a steak cooked to your desired taste (will be marinated upon request), a mushroom & onion topping for the steak if desire, a baked potato, and asparagus as a

“green side dish”. In addition, there will be a green salad, rolls, and several home-made desserts offered. It is requested that attendees stagger their arrival times to this event, as the “individualized” steak cooking could cause considerable delays in being served. However, you can always have your favorite beverage while waiting!

Celebrate the Year of the Monkey Chinese New Year Celebration on Saturday, February 6th (2:00pm – 6:00pm)

The Arlington Fraternity will be celebrating Chinese Year 4713 a few days early, as the beginning date of the new Chinese calendar year is February 8th; with a “parade” of delicious homemade food offerings. (Note: no dragons will be slain for this event). The Lodge chefs swear that the food will taste just like your “to-go” dishes from your local Chinese restaurant; if not better. The exact main dishes have not

been determined as of this publication; but there will definitely be fried rice, egg rolls, and the use of the wok to prepare the food offerings. Come eat, drink, and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow Moose members!

Next Moose Legion Committee Meeting on Thursday, February 11th @6:30pm

WOTM members & LOOM members are Welcome to attend

Congratulations to Nessa Ruoff and Roxanne Coles-Matis

Nessa Ruoff and Roxanne Coles-Matis each received the Academy of Friendship degree in the Women of the Moose. The Academy of Friendship Conferral Ceremony was conducted at the VMA Mid-Year Conference in Norfolk, VA on January 24, 2016. In attendance to honor

our two Arlington fraternity members were Andrea Hensley and Patti Green-Shupp [Note: there were many other WOTM members who were going to attend the ceremony but the winter snow storm kept them at home]. Thank you Nessa and Roxanne for all the hard work you provided to our fraternity while earning this advancement in the Women of the Moose.

Table Day – Saturday, February 20th (beginning 9:00am) If you have not heard, John Tribble and Christina Davies-Tribble have donated chairs and tables to the Arlington Lodge. All of these items are currently in storage at the Lodge. This event is to evaluate existing furniture in the Non-Smoking Fireplace Area and the Ritual Hall to determine which items need to be replaced, assemble the donated furniture as required, and take the necessary actions to perform the replacements. Please volunteer; the more members that assist … the quicker the task gets completed!

Endowment “Rocker Fundraiser” in February The fundraiser to support the operations of Moosehaven will be conducted during the entire month of February; as we will be requesting donations during the four planned events of the month. Please open your wallets and purses for a GREAT cause when you are asked to

contribute! The senior citizens at Moosehaven need our assistance, and who knows, our next generation may be getting us through “our Golden Years”. The Arlington Fraternity has set a goal of $250; which is based on $1 being donated by approximately half of our active members on the active roster (both LOOM & WOTM). Please give generously, not all active members come to the Lodge for the events to help meet this goal.

Notes from VA Moose Association District 4 Quarterly Meeting (Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Centreville #2168 Moose Lodge) Other than the financial report, the committee reports, and announcements from the Lodges/Chapters within the VMA District 4, the following are some

of the major items noted in the meeting:

The Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge had the most members at this meeting (which by our count was 24 members) and won the attendance trophy for the third consecutive time … resulting in a third permanent trophy at our Lodge.

A proposal was made to split the 14 Moose Lodges of District 4 into two VMA Districts (7 Moose Lodges each). The thought was that the travel time to District meeting could be greatly reduced; e.g.: northern Lodges would not have to travel to the southern Lodges. It was decided that all the Lodges would present this proposal to their current Board of Officers for discussion and vote.

The VMA District 4 announced that it was sponsoring a Family Cyber Security Day at the Manassas Moose Family Center #1380 on May 14, 2016.

Donations were approved for 5 Moose sponsored charitable organizations and to the Moosehaven Centennial Project.

New Challenge for Our Moose Fraternity in Support of the Seniors at Moosehaven As the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Moosehaven approaches in 2018, a new project has been initiated at “the land of sunshine & contentment” to construct a new 105 traditional

residential apartment complex. This project will include in-house amenities, state-of-the-art technology, and a conversion of an existing residential building into a Community Center. The project will improve the quality of life for our seniors; as well as improve building performance that lowers costs. Now, how this project impacts our members in the Arlington Fraternity. The Virginia Moose Association (VMA) has agreed to raise $500,000 between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2018 for this project; based on the estimate of $15.00 per current LOOM member within the VMA over this 3-year period. This commitment has established a donation goal of $3,900 for the Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge for the 3-year period. The Lodge plans to sponsor special events during this 3-year period to raise funds to meet our goal, and contributions will be made from the income generated in the Queen of Hearts Game. Please donate generously when requested for this worthwhile project! We need to keep “another day in Paradise” for our Moose seniors at Moosehaven. VMA is on its way to meet their commitment, as a total of over $60,000 was announced to already been collected in the “Money March” at the VMA Mid-Year Conference on January 23, 2016.

Legion Breakfast – January 16th As the Legion Breakfast was provided as an event within the Bull Run Moose Legion Winter Celebration/Conferral, the breakfast menu was greatly expanded to show our culinary talents. There was the normal food offerings of regular and blueberry pancakes with warmed maple syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, crispy bacon, potato home fries (with green peppers & onions), toast, coffee and orange juice.

And the additional surprise dishes at this event were French toast, crepes filled with scrambled eggs & cheese, quiche with spinach & mushrooms, and quiche with bacon and Swiss cheese. There were 27 Moose customers at this event. The Arlington Moose Legion Committee wants to extend a thank you to the breakfast chefs of Brian Van de Muelebroecke (Master Chef), Luis Cruz, John Webb, Tom Oderwald, Joyce Chaffin, Liz Coombs, & Anna Phillips; and to all those individuals who provided their effort in the cleanup after the event.

Un-Oktoberfest – January 30th (Ach du lieber! ) Wunderbar! Another successful social event for the Lodge, as over 40 Moose members and guests attended. Even though the Wiens (funfair) is celebrated for 16 days in Munich/Bavaria, Germany, the Arlington Fraternity gave a great effort in trying to compact all the food, beer, fun, and more beer in 1 day. The food offering was grilled bratwurst, grilled kielbasa, pork schnitzel, Rinderrouladen

(braised beef rolls), kielbasa with sauerkraut and potatoes, spaetzle (noodles), German hot potato salad, peppers and onions, red cabbage, and desserts. A thank you is extended to the Kϋchenchefs of Joyce Chaffins, Tom Oderwald, Billy Hensley, and Liz Coombs for the delicious food that “kept on coming” to satisfy the appetites for our members and guests. Furthermore, a thank you is extended to Tracy Moe for providing a German Chocolate Cake as the dessert offering. Finally, the Arlington Fraternity would like to thank all the members that assisted in the clean up after the event.

Lodge Repairs/Replacements The Lodge gave our fraternity a present this holiday by not requiring any repairs during the month of December. However, the first two weeks of January had a considerable amount of activities in sprucing up the Lodge in preparation for the Bull Run Moose Legion #185

Winter Celebration/Conferral. First, Billy Hensley finished the ventilation ceiling soffit within the Smoking Bar Area; including the installation of the grilles to the ventilation duct work at the ceiling soffit. Next Billy Hensley painted the walls in the Smoking Bar Area of the Social Quarters. At a special cleanup day on Sunday, January 10th, the acoustical ceiling tiles within the Non-Smoking Bar Area were replaced by Chuck Berge, Billy Hensley, Tom Oderwald, and Bernie Cerroni. In addition on this same cleanup day, Joe Russo, Rose Russo, Dominick Russo, Liz Coombs and John Matis cleaned the Board Room and portions of the Non-Smoking Fireplace Area (including the re-organization of toys outside the Board Room & assisting with the mess generated from the ceiling replacement), and Joyce Chaffins prepared a spaghetti bake for the members at the cleanup day. During the week leading up to the Winter Celebration/Conferral, Billy Hensley painted the walls and cleaned the various mirrors within the Non-Smoking Bar area; Joyce Chaffins cleaned the under-counter shelves within the Non-Smoking Bar Area (actually “cleared” the shelves, as they became completely empty … beware when opening any cabinets/closets in the Lodge); Judith York and Donna Heflin completed the general cleanup within the Non-Smoking Fireplace Area; Liz Coombs provided a “deep-down” cleaning of all the restrooms (except the unisex restroom off of the Smoking Bar Area … which was “decontaminated” by Billy Hensley); Billy Hensley cleaned the floor of the Ritual Hall; and Billy Hensley, Tom Oderwald, and Chuck Warrington replaced “nasty looking” acoustical ceiling tiles within the Ritual Hall. As a final complement for a great impression, the moose head donated by Aberdeen Moose Family Center #1450 was mounted on the wall within the Non-Smoking Bar Area. It did take two tries (the method to mount the moose head to the cinder block wall had to be changed); but it was accomplished through the efforts of many volunteers, with the leadership of Tom Oderwald and Billy Hensley. A thank you is extended to all those volunteers who assisted (Note: Jack Dwyer provided the mounting material that accomplished the final installation).

Thank you members for your efforts in providing a great image for our Lodge!

Senior Regent’s Message Hello all coworkers; Let’s see, where to start. The convention in Norfolk was GREAT. There were quite a few people missing and even with the horrible weather, there were 44 co-workers present to receive their “Academy of Friendship”; what an Honor.

The Woman of the Moose are having a Valentine Dinner on Saturday the 13th of February, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm; we always put on such great dinners and have a wonderful time at our Lodge. This month we will be gearing up for nominations to our Board of Officers and Chairmen; anyone wishing to be considered for any position, please submit a request to me (Nessa Ruoff, Senior Regent). February 2nd will be our first meeting of the month, the time is 7:00pm. February 16th is our second meeting, please try to attend and see what all the fun is about. See you all at the Lodge. Youth Awareness Program It was announced at the VMA 2016 Mid-Year Conference that 43 students have enrolled in the Youth Awareness Program within the Commonwealth of Virginia. There were 7 Moose Lodges that held Association Student Congresses during the months of September through October 2015; of which Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge was one of these Lodges.

Congratulations to VMA District 6 who enrolled/sponsored 26 students into the Program. We have been told that our sponsored student, Robert Van de Meulebroecke, will finalize his presentation for the KidsTalks by the end of January and plans to conduct his KidsTalks during the month of February. Let’s hope that we do not have any winter storms in February that could delay him in fulfilling the program requirements. It is noted that the Moose International Youth Awareness Congress will be held at Williamsburg, VA this year during the period of April 28 through May 2, 2016. All the State finalists of the Moose Lodges throughout the United States within the program gather at this event to determine the best presentations for determining the winners for the offered scholarships; and the students themselves are the ones that evaluate the presentations. It is an honor that John Matis of the Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge has been invited, and accepted, to be a chaperon at this event.

What can our Lodge/Chapter do to Attract Younger (Ages 21-50) Members? (Editorial by Brian Birtell – Past Governor & Community Service Chairman) People may see Moose fingerprinting kids at a local fair, walk through a park built with funds they raised or attended a pancake breakfast, fish fry or bingo night they sponsored. The Moose has long been a strong force in our community.

Unfortunately, stereotypes hold that Moose are aging men/women who march in parades or meet in smoky, dim social quarters. In order to survive into the next century we must recruit younger, more diverse members and adapt our programs to meet their needs. As a Whole the Moose Organization needs to change to meet the needs of today’s younger potential recruits. The question is what can be done locally at your lodge to attract a younger more diverse membership. We need to understand that younger members have different interests and tastes than our existing membership. A few areas where we can easily change to meet their interests are listed below. Activities – We need to look at our calendars with a critical eye and determine if we have become stuck in their ways by having the same activities year after year. Instead of a Square Dance or a Blue Grass band look at bringing in a DJ or Band that can play old standards but has a catalog of newer music for our younger members. Instead of only having Darts or Pool Tournaments try something different like volleyball, horseshoes, Cornhole or KanJam (google it – young folks love to play it at the beach or outdoors). The goal is not to have an entire social calendar geared to young members but to infuse our existing calendar with items they find more appealing. (Continued on Page 11)

Governor’s Corner

Everyone that I have talked to this past month with our members has expressed the enjoyment and the honor of having a moose head mounted within our Social Quarters. Therefore, I want to express a sincere thank you to the Aberdeen Moose Family Center #1450 for their donation of the

moose head to the Arlington Fraternity. In addition I want to specially thank Territorial Manager Michael Stumbaugh for his persistence in finding a moose head for our Fraternity, to Carl Schmidt, Jr. of the Maryland Moose Lodge for his efforts in arranging for our Fraternity to receive the moose head, and to Billy Hensley for arranging the truck rental and making the individual effort to pick-up and transport the moose head to the Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge.

What can our Lodge/Chapter do to Attract Younger Members? (Continued from Page 10)

Communication – Younger members do not rely on snail-mail. We need to step up our game to communicate real-time with our members. Every Lodge should have a website and Facebook page that are updated regularly. Why not add a weekly e-mail newsletter to supplement the monthly or quarterly newsletter, this will keep upcoming events on everybody’s minds and our younger members can get it right from their phone. Technology – We need to make our lodges appealing to younger members. Adding free Wi-Fi to allow members to have high speed access on their phones so that they can communicate with friends and browse the web is a great start. Move away from the old jukebox and get an internet jukebox where members can download songs from a massive library or order songs directly from their phones. Investing in a cell-phone charging station will keep us from losing a members’ patronage because their phone is dead and they have to leave so they don’t to miss a call. Attracting a younger, more diverse membership does not mean changing who we are as a lodge, it means adapting what we do, to appeal to a larger audience. In the end everyone benefits with increased membership which then increases what we can give back to the community.

Further Progress into the Technology Age! In case you have not noticed, the paper-sheet monthly wall calendar in the Social Quarters has been replaced with video on a large-screen television. A thank you is extended to Billy Hensley for installing a shelf for the television and to John Matis for developing the January 2016 calendar video. It is noted that the large-screen television is dedicated in memory of Ellis Fili.

A Video on Youtube about Mooseheart A 10th grader from Geneva High School prepared a documentary on Mooseheart’s Holiday Lights (which we purchased a snowflake in the display for the past 2 years). The documentary captures the essence of

what Mooseheart is all about with the children expressing themselves on camera. All our members should view this video!

Thank You for Representing the Arlington Fraternity at the 2016 VMA Mid-Year Conference in Norfolk, VA The Arlington Fraternity extends a thank you to Andrea Hensley, Nessa Ruoff, Roxanne Coles-Matis, Patricia Green-Shupp, John Ruoff, George (“Billy”) Hensley Jr., and John Matis for representing our organization at the VMA Mid-Year Conference in Norfolk, Virginia. Even knowing that a major snow storm had been expected to hit the Northern Virginia area during this specific weekend in January, you still ventured away from home to ensure that VMA knows that our Fraternity is serious to meet the challenges required to support the objectives of our Moose Fraternity. For the record, there was minimal snow at Norfolk, VA during the weekend (which disappeared when the precipitation changed to rain Saturday night); however, texted messages from friends/members back at Arlington, VA convinced everyone to stay another day until the roads in Northern Virginia were semi-cleared of the snow! The Arlington Fraternity would also like to thank the Winchester Moose Family Center #1283 for providing the friendliness, food, and gambling entertainment to our members in their Hospitality Suite during the Conference. This Moose Lodge extended their Hospitality Room on Sunday and had a television for everyone to watch the NFL Conference Champion Games … which all of our members took advantage of while staying the extra day.

Further Support to Our Fraternity by Powerhouse Gaming (100% sponsored by Powerhouse Gaming) Powerhouse Gaming has also initiated a program to support the Moose Legions during the period of February 1, 2016 to March 25, 2016 by

providing $50.00 to our Moose Legion for every 5 Moose members that join our Moose Legion. It is noted that the goal for each Moose Lodge this year is to have 25% of its members enrolled in the Moose Legion. Currently, Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge has 34 members within the Moose Legion, which is 13% of the membership. We need to try to increase the Moose Legion membership!

The Arlington Moose Legion Committee Corner Wow! It was a great day for the Arlington Moose Legion Committee as we had six members conferred at the Bull Run Moose Legion Winter Celebration/Conferral on January 16, 2016. Congratulations to Brian Van de Meulebroecke, Luis Cruz, Brian Birtell, Andre McFail, John

Webb, and Dominick Russo for becoming Legionnaires. As a surprise to all in attendance, the Arlington Moose Legion Committee presented a Legionnaire burgundy vest to Dominick Russo to show off his advancement within the Moose Fraternity; which he expressed great enjoyment in being honored with this gift. It is noted that VMA President Jim Cridlin provided several patches and pins at the VMA Mid-Year Conference to be given to Dominick to proudly display on his Legionnaire vest. As for the overall Bull Run Moose Legion #185 Winter Celebration/Conferral, it was a great success for the Arlington Fraternity. All our individual groups (Moose Legion Committee, Chapter #1253, and LOOM #1315) showed that we exist as an active organization in the Moose Fraternity and all the food offerings were delicious (everyone who participated in the event expressed that opinion). The Arlington Moose Legion Committee wants to thank all the Arlington Fraternity members who contributed their time, efforts, and donations to make this event a remembrance to our local Legion community; in regard to planning, cooking, serving, donating beverages and food items, continuous cleaning during the event, providing event furniture set-up and take-downs, and everything else that was necessary for the event! In the words of our Administrator … YOU ROCK!
