On April 27th, Dr. James Chan from the University of Pennsylvania came to Mr. Solomon’s American Studies classroom to discuss Chinese and United States relations currently and during the Cold War. His lecture also involved his experiences in coming to America from Hong Kong and quitting his job at a Fortune 500 to start his own business. Dr. Chan is the CEO of Asia Marketing Management and splits his time between lecturing at the University of Pennsylvania and representing American clients who wish to expand their business to China. He is also author of the book “Spare Room Tycoon”.

Gifted students explore Career Options

The Women in Computer Science Day was held in April. The LMHS students were given tours of the different engineering labs at the University of Pennsylvania. They were also able to sit in on a class and ask questions to a panel of current women in the engineering and computer science departments.

Posing with Penn’s electric race car is Julia Kurylec. Other students are pictured at the panel discussion.

Dr. Andrew V. Nguyen shared his research on transgenic mice with the Gifted Program and AP biology students

on April 11th. His research team has discovered that macrophages, cells of the immune system that normally help us to fight off disease, can actually stimulate the production of blood vessels in breast cancer tumors. This important finding may lead to improved breast cancer therapies through the suppression of tumor-associated macrophages in the breast. Dr. Nguyen is currently using his transgenic mice to study inflammatory diseases of the intestine, including IBD and Crohn’s.

Lower Moreland Township School District students were among the 564 chosen to compete in a national math competition. David Volchonok, 6th grade, and Emmit Fitzgerlad, 7th grade, were chosen out of 44,000 applicants from across the country to participate in MathCON, a prestigious academic competition hosted by Concept Schools in Chicago.

Students from 41 states took the initial exam to qualify for MathCON, which was held at the University of Illinois at Chicago on April 23rd. The day-long event brings together elementary middle and high school students to compete for various prizes such as mini IPads, gift cards, and national prestige through various math questions and activities.

MathCON was created in 2008 by Concept Schools as a Midwest competition with just 125 participants, and has since grown into a national event. MathCON’s goal is to engage students in STEM outside of the classroom and encourage more students to enter the STEM fields, which are currently some of the fastest-growing industries in the United States.

“We’re incredibly proud when any of our student earns recognition for their accomplishments, and we’re so

excited to have David Volchonok and Emmit Fitzgerlad, represent

the Lower Moreland Township School District at MathCON,” Dr. Marykay Feeley, Superintendent of Schools, said. “The STEM field is such an important part of the future, and we actively encourage our teachers and students to find fun ways to use STEM inside and outside of the classroom. This is a great honor not only for these students, but also for our schools.”

“MathCON is our way of inspiring the future leaders in science, technology, math and engineering by engaging students at a young age, making STEM fun and demonstrating its real-world applications,” said Ayhan Caputlu of Concept Schools, which organizes the event. “The competition allows us to reach students from all over the nation and help them establish, improve and maintain skills that can lead to many possibilities throughout their educational careers and beyond.”

In addition to the approximately hour-long test, students at this year’s competition enjoyed a presentation from “math-magician” Arthur T. Benjamin, had a pizza party with other participants and played an array of STEM-related games.

For a full agenda, visit mathcon.org.

is a mathematical modeling contest for high school juniors and seniors. Through participation, students gain the experience of working in teams to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints akin to those faced by industrial applied mathematicians. The Challenge is sponsored by The Moody’s Foundation and organized by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and awards $150,000 in scholarships. The M3 Challenge spotlights applied mathematics as a

powerful problem-solving tool, and as a viable and exciting profession.

The juniors listed below received Honorable Mention for their solution paper for Moody’s Mega Math Challenge which took place on February 28th. This year’s real world problem that had to be solved was “Share and (Car) Share Alike: Modeling New Approaches to Mobility.”

On March 14th, Pine Road Elementary School hosted author Bryan Collier, who wrote Clemente!; I, Too, Am America, and Rosa, among others. He spoke to the students during assemblies and in smaller groups when they visited the library. The visit was arranged by Mrs. Ellen Zschunke, Pine Road School’s librarian.

Currently, Mr. Collier spends his time working on his book illustrations, creating his own studio pieces, and going into classrooms to talk about books and art.

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society sponsors junior flower shows in elementary and middle schools in PA every year. The one for Murray Avenue School was held on June 8th.

The Junior Flower Show, coordinated by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, is a horticultural exhibition by and for school-age children. The program fosters an interest in horticulture and the natural environment and encourages active participation in growing, gardening, and sustainable practices.

The children have the opportunity to compete in a variety of projects appropriate for their age, including crafts with natural materials, container-grown plants, terrariums, photography, and artistic creations. Each category is judged and the winning entries receive ribbons.

Sixth grade stu-dents recently finished a por-trait project to re-inforce concepts covered in their Language Arts classes and to compliment the novel they read,

“Fever 1793.” Murray Avenue Language Arts teachers, Sue Barnhart and Emily Loeffler, shared their enthusi-asm for this new 6th grade novel with Murray Avenue Art teacher, Jayna Jolly. The fact that the book’s heroine owns a coffee shop that displays artwork was of par-ticular interest. The artwork was created by a charac-

ter who had an apprenticeship with the Peale family, a prolific Philadelphia-based family of artists who have a long and lasting legacy. Charles Wilson Peale was the founder of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and best known for his portraits, specifically of histor-ical figures such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

As a follow-up and closure to the project, the following 6th grade students were chosen to have their portraits displayed at the Be Well Bakery from April 8th to April 29th. On April 8th, an opening reception was held at the bakery and, as an added bonus, Lower Moreland High School Music teacher, Dr. Sarah Gulish, and some of her high school students performed as a musical ensemble.

The Murray Avenue Middle School Drama Club, under the direction of Mrs. Susan Barnhart, presented The Lion King Jr. on May 12th and 13th. The performance was based on the famed Broadway Production and a great time was had by all with young children invited to attend dressed in costume.

With the help of our teacher dress down day and team donations, the Lower Moreland High School lacrosse team was able to collect $325 to donate to HEADstrong! The donation was made in honor of a player’s father who is currently undergoing cancer treatments. The team wore neon green ribbon to show support for their teammate

and teammate’s family on May 10th in a league game against Delco Christian. After losing about 10 seniors last year, Lower Moreland had to rebuild this year and the win against Delco ended up being one of three wins for the entire season, with ALL three wins taking place during the last week of the season.

The Lower Moreland boys swim team finished their season at states at Bucknell in March. The team finished seventh overall out of 57 participating schools! The state meet is a two-day event, with swimmers participating in preliminaries in the morning. The top sixteen finishers at preliminaries make finals, and out of those swimmers, the top eight at preliminaries swim in the final heat and medal at states.

The 200 Medley relay, consisting of Connor Killion, Chris Kelly, Tommy Lutter, and Tom Seefried, placed 9th with a time of 1:39.16, a record time for LM. (Had the boys made it into the final heat during prelims, their time would have placed them in fifth compared to the times in the final heat!) Connor Killion placed second in the 200 freestyle in the state with a time of 1:41.20. Tom Seefried made it to finals and placed eleventh in the state with a time of 22.09. The 200 free

relay, consisting of Chris Kelly, Connor Pietro, Tom Seefried, and Connor Killion, placed sixth in the state with a time of 1:29.47. Finally, Connor Killion placed third in the 500 freestyle, with a time of 4:37.82.

In addition, Chris Kelly placed 18th at prelims in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.45, missing finals by two spots. Tommy Lutter placed 28th in the state with a time of 55.94.

High School Art Teacher, Mrs. Trudi Smith, took a group of her students on a trip to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Philadelphia Flower Show on March 9th.

Seventh grade art students at Murray Avenue were recently participants of The Memory Project. This project connects art teachers with underprivileged children around the world who have been victims of substantial challenges such as neglect, abuse, extreme poverty and/or loss of parents. Teachers are asked to have their students create portraits of the children, to help them feel valued and important - to know that other people care about their well-being.

Our 7th graders completed their amazing portraits

and they were be mailed to the administrators of this organization, where they will then be hand-delivered to children in Peru. The best part, is that a video was taken of the children receiving their portraits and mailed back to us to complete this circle of giving. IMovie Trailer:http://www.lmtsd.org/Domain/283
