TRANSCRIPT
October 15-19 is Discover U Week at Lowell.
Discover U is an opportunity for every student to explore college and career opportunities they may be interested in pursuing. We will be exploring college pathways in our classrooms, and hanging college pennants up in the lunchroom. Feel free to bring in your own pennant! Friday, October 19th will be Goal Friday. Students are encouraged to wear any future school shirt or colors—i.e. middle school, high school, or college wear; or the school colors of a future school.

Time to Ready! Set! Read!
Is there a future Lowell Leopard in your family? A great way to help your preschool child get ready for kindergarten is to join Lowell’s Ready! Set! Read! Program. Bring in your 3-5-year-old to check out books from our special preschool shelf on Mondays from 3:00 – 3:30 beginning October 29th. Your child will receive a poster to keep track of books read and prizes for reading. This is a great way for preschoolers to get to get familiar with our school and the Lowell library.
Coming Home… Your child will be bringing
home a couple of important
documents that the office
needs returned as soon as
possible. THANK YOU!

Say BOO to the Flu!
Your decision to get the flu shot or not goes well beyond you. It also affects the many lives you touch…
Influenza is a contagious disease of the respiratory tract (nose, throat, and lungs) that can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and the worsening of other
chronic health conditions. Flu symptoms may include fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle aches. The best way to protect your family from new influenza strains is to get vaccinated each year.
The top five most virus-contaminated areas in the home are: 1. Telephones (have you cleaned your cell phone lately?)
2. Appliances such as the refrigerator and microwave 3. Faucets
4. Light switch and door handles 5. TV remotes
Follow good health guidelines: eat right, exercise, and get plenty of rest to help boost your immunity to fight the effects of colds and flu. Wash hands frequently, do the elbow cough, and disinfect hot spots at school, work, and home. Treat the symptoms if you must, but avoid giving aspirin to children because it may cause a rare but serious illness called Reye syndrome.
Prime Time Extended Learning
The data is out and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the key to healthy
development for our children. “Social and emotional learning (SEL)
programs, which previously have shown immediate improvements in mental
health, social skills, and academic achievement, continue to benefit students
for months and even years to come, according to a 2017 meta-analysis from
CASEL, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University, and the
University of British Columbia. “ (https://casel.org/impact/)
Schools are well aware of the importance of SEL, but with the pressure to
provide a rigorous academic foundation and meet standards, they simply
don't have enough time or resources to implement SEL in the school day.
Employers are on board as well stating that “even though applicants had the
technical prowess, they lacked the communication, adaptability, decision-
making, and problem-solving skills needed to do the job” resulting in a lack
of hire-able employees.
So, the question is where do kids gain these skills? Prime Time Extended
Learning Center (PT), among other youth development centers and
programs, is centered around Social Emotional Learning. PT is currently in
their 3rd year of testing a quality rating system for the state that focuses on
SEL and uses the SEL Assessment tool to measure quality. Prime Time is also
active in lobbying to encourage state leaders to adopt SEL into a rounded
education for our youth. Now more than ever, programs like PT are more
than just a child care center where kids wait to be picked up by working
parents. Dedicated to providing quality SEL instruction, they are a key
component to the healthy development of your child. Gemma Stephani, Director Prime Time Extended Learning Center [email protected] (253)627-2616

Just a reminder… we love our furry friends, but they are not allowed on school grounds during the school day.
