Accounting and Business

1. 1826 Lowell High Scholarship Fund $500

Scholarship awarded to a minimum of two and no more than four graduating seniors who have taken a

minimum of two Business Education courses at LHS (excluding Office Intern, Work Experience and

Marketing Lab) and have received a grade of 85 or above in each course. Preference will be given to

students who participated in DECA, Business Professionals of America, or who worked in the School

Store. Students must be attending a two- or four-year institution or technical school.

2. John M. Kenney Memorial Scholarship Fund $250

Awarded to a student who plans to pursue an education in accountancy or business administration.

(Not available until 2015)

3. Ann Burns Murphy Scholarship Fund $250

Awarded to a senior from Lowell High School with average or higher grades who is interested in studying

business administration or related studies at a two-year or four-year institution.

(Not available until 2015)

4. Edward Everett Sawyer Scholarship Fund $250

Awarded to students who plan to major in banking or business.

(Not available until 2015)

Athletics

5. John H. Costello Memorial Scholarship $1,000

Awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. Applicants must have participated in community

service and either music or athletics.

6. Colleen Creegan Memorial Scholarship Fund $500 - $999

Awarded to members of the LHS Cheerleading Squad.

7. Martin “Mickey” Finn Scholarship $500

Applicants must have previously participated in the Centerville Baseball League. Applicants must have a

minimum 2.5 GPA and write a brief essay discussing how they benefited from playing recreational

baseball.

8. Leo and Matthew Flynn Memorial Scholarship Fund $1,000 - $1,499

Awarded to students with financial need and at least a B average who have demonstrated leadership in

community/civic activities and participated in extracurricular activities, including either varsity or junior

varsity sports.

9. Amy E. Lekites Memorial Scholarship Fund* $250 - $499

Awarded to deserving female track or cross-country athletes.

(Presented at LHS Athletic Awards Banquet.)

10. Michael J. Kuenzler Scholarship Fund $1,000

Awarded to deserving seniors on the wrestling team who plan to study at a two- or four-year academic

institution.

11. James S. Martin Scholarship Fund $500

Awarded to students with financial need and who have participated in Highland Little League baseball,

softball or basketball teams.

On the application, applicants should describe their relevant participation.

12. Walter L. Nelson Scholarship Fund $500 - $999

Awarded to students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship and athletics.

(Awarded at Athletic Awards Banquet)

13. Brian F. Reynolds Student Athlete Scholarship Fund $1,000 - $1,999

Awarded to one male and one female student who have excellent grades and have excelled at a school

sport.

14. Thomas “Tiny” Sheehan Scholarship Fund $500 - $999

Awarded to students with financial need who have distinguished themselves through participation in

varsity sports and plan to pursue an education at a college or vocational training school.

15. Frederick M. Slavin Track Scholarship Fund* $250 - $499

Awarded to students who have participated in track.

16. Daniel F. Sullivan Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to students who demonstrate financial need, participate in school athletics, school activities or

hold a job after school while at LHS.

17. Chet Szablak Jr. Scholarship Fund $1,000

Awarded to graduating seniors who have played football at Lowell High School, have maintained a

minimum GPA of 3.0, and will be attending a college where they will continue to play football.

Community Service

18. John Michael Delehanty Memorial Scholarship $500

Awarded to a deserving student who demonstrates leadership ability and community involvement through

volunteer work.

19. Louis Fineman Memorial Scholarship Fund $1,000

Awarded to students who have demonstrated a strong work ethic via academics, school service and work

in the community.

20. Friends of Lowell High School Founders Scholarship Fund $1,000 - $1,499

Awarded to graduating seniors who have demonstrated a record of service in student and/or community

activities and who plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year institution.

To be eligible, a parent or guardian must be a paid member of the FLHS for the current year.

21. Friends of Tyler Park Scholarship* $250

Awarded to a student who is an active member of the LHS Recycling Club. The student must have been

an active member of the club during his/her junior and senior years. Students must attach an attendance

verification form from the club’s advisor.

22. Melvin A. Glazer Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to an honors student of strong character with a record of community service who plans to study

business at an accredited academic institution.

23. John J. and Clara M. Hurley Scholarship Fund $1,500+

Awarded to students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, community involvement, a dedication to

the best interests of LHS, and who exhibit financial need.

24. Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank / $1,000

Gerald R. Wallace Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to students (one male and one female) who have a strong record of community service.

25. McCallum Family Foundation Scholarship Fund* $7,500

Awarded to two deserving students with academic class standing in the mid-to-upper range who

demonstrate financial need. The recipient must have worked or volunteered for ten hours per week in the

community or at Lowell High School.

Finalists will be interviewed by a committee.

Application requirements:

Three letters of recommendation from teachers and/or counselors

26. Supt. Henry J. and Theresa R. Mroz Scholarship Fund $1,000

Awarded to a student each year over four years of attendance at a college or university.

The student must fulfill the following three equally weighted criteria (as judged by the Scholarship

Advisory Committee):

Achieved a GPA ranking among the top 25% of the graduating class

Established an active commitment to community service through volunteering with one or more

community organizations or civic initiatives, or have been active in school-based community

outreach efforts

Write an accomplished essay describing how he or she has displayed exemplary behavior

exercising the golden rule ("Do unto others as you would have others do unto you") in the context

of an important personal experience

27. Riddick Family Scholarship Fund $1,500+

Awarded to students with strong academics who demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities at

the high school and in the community.

28. Raymond E. Riddick Scholarship* TBD

Awarded to deserving students.

29. Peter S. Stamas Scholarship Fund $1,000

Awarded to students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and participate in community service and

school activities.

30. Sullivan Middle School PTO Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to graduates of the Sullivan School who demonstrate financial need, scholarship, and character,

as well as participate in community service and school activities.

31. Joseph E. Sweeney Memorial Scholarship* $5,000

Awarded to a student who exemplifies academic excellence as demonstrated by high school performance

(must be a member of the National Honor Society and be ranked in the top 5% of the class), as well as

substantial extracurricular activities and leadership roles at school and elsewhere. Must demonstrate a

commitment to community and family in the tradition of Joseph Sweeney. Financial need is not a

criterion for this award.

Application requirements:

The LHS Honors Night Scholarship Application, scholarship transcript, résumé, essay

three letters of recommendation: one from a teacher, one from a family member, and one from a

person of the applicant’s choosing

Essay: “Describe examples where you have taken a leadership role in making a positive impact

on your family, your school and your broader community.” (Limit 500 words)

32. Walter J. Poirier Scholarship Fund $500 - $999

Awarded to Lowell High School graduating seniors who are members of the National Honor Society,

with preference to a member of the LHS Golf Team or a graduate of the Daley Middle School in Lowell.

33. Thomas J. and Mary E. Saab Scholarship Fund $500

Awarded to students who demonstrate both excellence in scholarship and financial need.

34. William Samaras/Kendall Wallace Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund $250-$499

Awarded to a graduating senior who plans to attend UMass Lowell or Middlesex Community College and

who has demonstrated leadership qualities at Lowell High School and/or the community at large.

35. Frank D. Weymouth Memorial Scholarship $500

Awarded to a senior who attended or graduated from the Bartlett Community Partnership School.

Consideration will be given to academic performance; professional and personal goals; character;

financial need; and school, community, or work activities.

Computer

36. Merrimack Valley Food Bank Scholarship in Memory of $250 - $499

Guy Francesshelli Scholarship Fund

Awarded to students with a distinguished record of community service and a commitment to study

computer science or information technology at the college level.

Culinary Arts

37. Cobblestones/Plath Family Culinary Arts Scholarship Fund $500

Awarded to students who wish to pursue study in the culinary arts or food and beverage management at a

two- or four-year college or institute of culinary arts. Candidates must be in good academic standing and

have work or internship experience in the food and beverage or hospitality industry.

Applicants please describe this work/internship experience on a separate sheet.

38. Herbert Paul Doran Memorial Scholarship $500

Awarded to a student with financial need who wishes to pursue further study in the culinary arts (with an

emphasis on baking) at a college or institute of culinary arts. Candidates must have a B average or above-

average GPA.

Education

39. Daniel Crowther Memorial Scholarship Fund $250

Awarded to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a two- or four-year course of higher education and

who has demonstrated leadership qualities at Lowell High School and/or the community at large.

40. Helen Martha Dancause Scholarship $500

Awarded to a student who plans to pursue a degree in education.

41. Mary F. Hogan Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to a student who plans to pursue a post-secondary degree in education at an accredited four-year

college or university.

42. LHS Class of 1955 Scholarship Fund $250

Awarded to students with a B average who want to pursue a teaching degree. Applicants must have

participated in sports, been involved in the community, and held a part-time job during high school.

43. Katherine M. Martin Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to deserving students who plan to study elementary education at an accredited institution.

44. Rita Sharcoff Mizner Memorial Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to students who plan to pursue a career in public education.

Applicants must submit a separate essay describing their interest in pursuing this field.

45. Muriel R. Moriarty Scholarship Fund $1,500

Awarded to students who plan to pursue a degree in education for the purpose of becoming a teacher at a

four-year institution.

46. Thomas F. and Helena B. Murphy Scholarship Fund $500

Awarded to graduating seniors who plan to pursue a degree in education at a four-year institution.

47. Georgia Sarris Memorial Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to students planning a career in education. Preference may be given to students of Greek

heritage.

48. Kathryn Philbin Stoklosa Memorial Scholarship Fund $450

Awarded to a student who plans to pursue a degree in education and who has “civic engagement” and/or

community service experience.

Awarded to a student for creating an outstanding work of poetry.

Awarded to a graduate of the Reilly School who has been in the top of his or her class in English,

literature, and grammar for four years.

For Female Graduates

54. Ruth I. Brennan Memorial Scholarship Fund $500 - $999

Awarded to female graduates of the Sullivan School.

55. Ruth I. Brennan Memorial Scholarship Fund $500 - $999

Awarded to female graduates of the Wang School.

56. Sarah Droney-McGurrin Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to students who plan to pursue a career in journalism. Preference may be given to female

applicants.

57. Girls Incorporated Loretta Duncan Scholarship Fund $1,000

Awarded to graduating seniors who are past or current members of the Girls Inc. and who are planning to

attend a two- or four-year college or university.

58. Mary Jo (Reilly) Quinlan Memorial Scholarship Fund $1,000

Awarded to students who plan to attend the College of the Holy Cross and who have demonstrated

leadership qualities at Lowell High School and/or the community at large. Preference may be given to

female applicants.

59. Katina Pappas Tsongas Memorial Scholarship Fund $1,500 - $2,000

Awarded to one female Lowell resident.

Instead of the required essay on the Honors Night Scholarship Application, candidates must write an

essay (500 words) that demonstrates their awareness of women’s issues.

Financial Need

60. Attorney Maurice Barlofsky Scholarship Fund $450

Awarded to one student with financial need for each of their four years of attendance at Boston

University.

61. Don Costa Memorial Scholarship Fund $1,000 - $1,499

Awarded to students with financial need. Preference may be given to students who are related to former

employees of Colonial Gas.

Applicants please describe their student/employee relationship on a separate sheet.

62. Lawrence L. Day Memorial Scholarship $500

Awarded to students based on academics and financial need.

Awarded to students with financial need who plan to pursue college study in English or the media arts.

67. Anna Lekas Kuenzler Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to students with financial need who plan to attend a two- or four-year academic institution.

68. Brendan D. Leahey Scholarship Fund $1,500+

Awarded to graduating seniors of high academic merit with financial need.

69. LHS Class of 1957 Scholarship Fund $500

Awarded to students who demonstrate economic need, academic merit, and/or community service.

70. LHS Class of 1969 Scholarship Fund $500

Awarded to students with financial need.

71. Lowell Bank Scholarship $500

Awarded to students with financial need who will be enrolled in an undergraduate college degree program

during the 2014-2015 academic year.

72. Middlesex Women’s Club of Lowell Scholarship Fund $250

Awarded to seniors with financial need who plan to attend a college or university.

73. Mojtabai Family Scholarship Fund $250

Awarded to graduating seniors who earn at least a B average, while demonstrating strong involvement in

extracurricular activities and financial need; preference given to minority students who plan to attend a

two- or four-year college or university.

74. J. Stephen Ronan Scholarship Fund $250 - $999

Awarded to graduating seniors from D House with financial need.

75. Washington Savings Bank Scholarship $500

Awarded to students with financial need in the top 1/6 of their class.

Heritage

76. Mary V. Kiafas Scholarship Fund $500 - $999

Awarded to students of Greek heritage.

77. Stella Kyriacopoulos Memorial Scholarship $5,000

Awarded to a student with a C (or above) average with financial need who plans to attend a four-year

college or university. Preference may be given to students of Greek heritage.

of mathematics or education.

80. Amsi Morales Scholarship Fund $250

One or more scholarships will be awarded to graduating students of Lowell High School who are of

Hispanic heritage and who have had to work during the school year or who have a record of community

service. Student(s) must have an overall B average during their senior year and must plan to attend a two-

or four-year college.

Application requirements:

An essay (500 words max)

Essay question: "Tell us one thing you hope to do/accomplish during your college years?"

One letter of recommendation from a teacher, community service supervisor, or employer

81. Portuguese–American Scholarship Fund* $1,500+ Awarded to students who wish to pursue study at a two- or four-year college, with preference to students

of Portuguese descent, defined as having direct relatives from the mainland of Portugal or its two island

areas, Madeira and the Azores.

Application requirements:

An essay (2-4 pages)

Essay topic: Please compose an essay about “William Madison Wood”

Essay must be typed and attached to the application

82. Rev. Dr. Peter G. Rizos Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to a graduating senior with excellent moral standing who is a member of the National Honor

Society and who is LHS’s highest-ranking senior of Greek descent (defined as having at least one parent

of Greek descent).

83. Dr. Joseph R. Rocha NAACP Scholarship Fund $500 - $999

Awarded to students of African American or African descent who have a B average or above and who

wish to pursue a career in business through further education at a college or university.

Awarded to students who can demonstrate proof of having at least one parent of Greek heritage or who

are graduates of the Bartlett Community Partnership School.

Immigrant

88. Sally Birke Memorial Scholarship Fund $500

"In recognition of Sally and Nathan Birke's commitment to giving their first-generation American

children the best educational opportunities possible, this scholarship is to benefit first-generation

American or immigrant students who have been admitted to a U.S. institution of higher education."

89. Goriansky Brothers Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to an honors student who emigrated or whose parents emigrated from another country and who

plans to pursue the study of architectural design or the visual arts.

90. George D. and Stella A. Kouloheras Scholarship Fund $500

Awarded to one LHS graduating senior who is a first- or second-generation child of an immigrant, is a

graduate of the Bartlett Middle School or the Hellenic American Academy, and who has performed

community service and plans to attend a two- or four- year college.

91. Ned & Alice Refugee Scholarship $500

Awarded to a refugee, child of a refugee, or a student who is in asylum in the US and living in Lowell.

Language

92. Henry J. Jubinville Scholarship Fund* $1,500+

Awarded to an exemplary student of French.

Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice

93. Michael J. Kuenzler Scholarship Fund $1,000

One scholarship will be awarded to students who plan to study law enforcement at a two- or four-year

academic institution.

94. Lowell Police Officer Scholarship Fund in Memory of $250 - $499

Patrick Leavitt, George F.A. Pearsall, Christos G. Rouses and John Joseph Winn

Awarded to students who plan to pursue studies in criminal justice at a two- or four-year institution.

Awarded to students who have served at least one year as a library intern at Lowell High School.

Scholarships will be awarded to LHS graduates in the following categories:

Awarded to students who plan to pursue the study of medicine or a related field.

100. Harry F. Bean Memorial Scholarship Fund $2,000

Awarded to a Lowell High School graduate who wishes to pursue a career in nursing and who plans to

obtain their degree from the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

101. Janet Connors Memorial Scholarship* $500

Awarded to a student who plans to major in nursing and to pursue an RN degree at a four-year college or

university.

102. Natalie J. Eacrett Memorial Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to a student who plans to major in nursing and to pursue an RN degree at a four-year institution.

103. Dennis Krysiak Memorial Scholarship Fund $250

Awarded to graduating seniors with financial need who plan to pursue the study of physical education,

health, or biology.

104. Alice Dolan Murphy Scholarship Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to students who plan to study nursing at a two- or four-year college.

Awarded to deserving seniors who plan to attend a four-year college or university and major in art

history, art education, or a visual arts discipline. Students must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Submit a portfolio in CD format that demonstrates outstanding achievement in the arts

Attach a separate essay on the following topic: "How a college education will help me achieve

my goal to be an artist, designer, or art educator."

Awarded to students who attended the Joseph G. Pyne Arts School for a minimum of four years and

graduated from the school. The student must plan to attend a college, vocational or technical school, or

any accredited school of higher learning.

Awarded to graduating instrumental (preferably woodwind) students from LHS who plan to major in

music or music education in college.

Awarded to a student going into music. Priority will follow this schedule: 1) choral arts student, voice

133. Friends of Lowell High School, Inc. (FLHS) General Scholarships* $500 - $750

Eligibility requirements:

To be considered for one of the FLHS general scholarships, the applicant must:

Awarded to a female LHS graduating senior who has also attended the Morey Elementary School. The

student shall have a GPA average of 2.5 and will be pursuing a career in either education or nursing.

Awarded to students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to academics (an average of 85 or

above) and who work a minimum of ten hours per week in the local community in order for them to

pursue studies at a two- or four-year accredited academic institution.

146. George N. Tsapatsaris Scholarship Fund $500 - $999

Awarded to graduates of the Bartlett Community Partnership School who will attend a four-year college

or university. Consideration will be given to financial need, character, scholarship, community service or

work, and extracurricular activities.

147. Paul Tsongas/University of Massachusetts Lowell Scholarship* Four-year scholarship

This award is in memory of Senator Paul Tsongas, who was a Trustee at UMass Lowell and a champion

of the City of Lowell. This scholarship provides free tuition, fees, a standard room, and the meal plan for

up to eight traditional fall and spring semesters toward the completion of a bachelor’s degree.

Application requirements:

Acceptance to UMass Lowell for the 2014 fall semester

Candidates must provide the following documentation that describes their attributes as they relate

to the school and/or community:

1. Community Service documentation signed by a supervisor that verifies the dates, hours and

services provided

2. Applicant must write an additional essay of no more than two double-spaced pages discussing

the applicant’s service to the school and/or community and the effect that this service has had

on their lives

3. Three letters of recommendation

Return the application, an ID-only transcript, the scholarship essay, a résumé and additional

supporting documents as described above to Mrs. Cassidy by Feb. 28, 2014. No late entries will

be accepted.

Personal interviews will be conducted for the top six candidates.

148. UPS Scholarship $500

Awarded to students who plan to continue their education at a two- or four-year college or university.

Preference will be given to an employee of UPS. Please indicate on application.

149. Dr. An Wang Middle School Scholarship $300

Awarded to students who attended the Dr. An Wang Middle School for four years, graduated from the Dr.

An Wang Middle School, and who plan to attend a college, vocational/technical school, or any accredited

school of higher learning after graduation from high school.

150. Allied Waste Services of Massachusetts, LLC Scholarship $1,000

Awarded to students who have been involved in environmental projects at LHS or in the community, or

who have been accepted into an environmental science-related major.

Documentation explaining participation in projects and/or acceptance into the particular major must be

attached to the application.

151. Edward J. Babigan Memorial Scholarship Fund $1,000 - $1,499

Awarded to an outstanding senior student of chemistry.

152. Athena Letsou Science Club Scholarship Fund* $250 - $499

Awarded to students who contributed most to the progress of the Science League by participating in

contests, helping with planning, and generally assuming a leadership role in the successful functioning of

the group.

153. Lowell Garden Club Genieve E. Lawrence Memorial Scholarship Fund $1,300

Awarded to a LHS graduating senior who will be matriculating at an accredited college or university in

order to pursue the study of arts and/or sciences relating to horticulture in its broadest aspect. Acceptable

courses include agronomy, conservation, botany, city planning, environmental sciences, floriculture,

forestry, horticulture, and landscape design.

154. Dr. Joseph D. Sweeney Science Fund $250 - $499

Awarded to students who have proven abilities in the field of science and who intend to pursue a career in

a scientific field.

Awarded to students pursuing the study of science.

156. Joey O’Connor Memorial Scholarship Fund $250

Awarded to a special needs graduate who plans to pursue a further education.

TV Studio

157. Colleen Creegan TV Production Scholarship $500

Awarded to students who have worked in the LHS TV studio for a minimum of one year. Students must

major in television communications or technology, and must produce a two-minute TV film describing

something they have done with the studio.

Please submit the Lowell High School Honors Night Scholarship Application, a scholarship transcript, a
