How to useConsult the index/table of contents forappropriate equipment page number;locate the part number on the drawingor table and find the name and cost ofthe part on numerically arranged centerprice list insert. Replacement equip-ment available directly from Lowel isarranged in three groups—individualparts, assemblies and products.

Assemblies are groups of partsassembled in our factory. MostProducts are available only throughAuthorized Lowel Dealers. The prod-ucts listed in the price list insert, aswell as some others, may be pur-chased directly from Lowel.

Most assemblies and parts shown inthe exploded view drawings have num-bers; however, some do not. Thosewith numbers can be used for replace-ment or repair using a few basic tools.Parts without numbers require specialtools or assembly techniques (such asriveting) and are not available.

Ordering PartsCheck with your Lowel Dealer to deter-mine if they have stock of the neededitems. If not, Lowel can ship parts fromour Factory. See back of price listinsert for more information. Wemake every effort to ship parts within afew days. Lowel parts are availableonly in limited quantities for the pur-pose of maintaining and repairingLowel equipment. Price and availabilityare subject to change without notice.

RepairsSome Lowel Dealers can repair ourequipment. If your dealer is not able tohandle repairs, send or bring yourLowel equipment to our BrooklynFactory along with a description of theproblem. Please include your daytimephone number. We will charge on atime and materials basis and will notundertake repairs that rival new equip-ment costs. Requests for quotes willnecessarily delay repairs.

n Always read the instruc-tions supplied with Lowelfixtures. Copies are available by con-tacting us, or on www.lowel.com.

n Electrical repairs should beundertaken only by qualifiedelectricians. Lowel will not be heldliable for any loss, damage, injury, orexpenses of any kind resulting fromout-of-factory alteration, modificationor repair of any Lowel product.

n Serious damage to lights andto users can result from interfer-ing with the unit’s ventilation.Never cover any light with aluminumfoil or other materials. Make certainthat reflector doors on the Tota-lightare open to the proper minimum oper-ating position before turning the uniton. Similarly, make certain that thelamp covers on the Softlight are prop-erly opened before operation.

n Safety screens must always beused. Tota, Omni, and DP Lights allcome with safety screens that attach tothe front of the fixture to provide addedprotection in case of an explodinglamp.

If you own older fixtures (pre-1990) without safetyscreens, please contact us.We’ll send free safety screensfor your lights.

Causes of Short Lamp Life1) Defective lampsDue to inconsistencies in lamp produc-tion, an individual lamp or a batch oflamps may function for far less thantheir “rated life.” If all other short-lifefactors are properly attended to, andyou think that your lamps are defective,contact your dealer or the lamp manu-facturer with the following information:manufacturer’s name, total operating lifeof each lamp (in approximate hours),and the batch number printed on thelamp base of each lamp.

2) Improper insertion(seating) of lampsIn order to maintain proper electricalcontact, new sockets are “stiff” andmay require considerable lamp inser-tion pressure. If the lamp is not fullyinserted arcing and pitting of the sock-et contacts and lamp pins may occur.This diminishes electrical contact, andcauses overheating of these parts,leading to rapid lamp contact andsocket contact deterioration.

3) Defective or worn-outlampholders (sockets)If the contact or contact spring in anylight fixture is loose or dark or dull orpitted, short lamp life and erratic (turn-ing on-off) performance may result.Lampholders with dark, loose or pittedcontacts should be replaced.

4) Use of the fixture inimproper orientationsSee instructions for individual light fixtures.

5) Operating the fixture atimproper voltagesLamps must be operated at propervoltages. Never use 12, 30 or 120Vlamps at higher source voltages.Check lamp voltage and source voltagebefore turning on light.

6) Shock or vibrationCompact filament lamps (such as thePro and Omni) may fail if subjected tovibration while on. Turn off light beforemoving or adjusting. Focus smoothly.

7) Frequent removal andinsertion of lampLeave lamps in fixtures during normallocation transport.

8) Ventilation obstructionNever block any vents on any Lowellight, for any reason.

CablesIt is not unusual for cables to be warmduring normal operation. However,switches should not be warmer thanthe cable. A hot switch or electricalplug (male or female) may be on theverge of failure, and should bereplaced. In general, a loose contactwill result in overheating at that con-tact. Tightening a loose screw (in aswitch or female plug) may alleviatethis problem.

Aging cables may become pro-gressively warmer. However, if theinsulation becomes hot and begins tomelt or crack, the cordset should bereplaced.

Dimmers120V dimmers may be used with allLowel lights in conjunction with 120Vtungsten lamps. They should not beused with Lowel fluorescent fixtures.(You cannot use a 120V dimmer tocontrol a 30V or 12V lamp). Mostelectronic dimmers can cause the lampfilament to hum, and will lower thecolor temperature (making the lightappear more yellow). Also, if a lamp isdimmed too low and the halogen cycleis interrupted, the lamp’s quartz wallsmay blacken.

220/240 VoltCE approved Lowel lights can be usedat 220V or 240V. If a 240V lamp isavailable for a particular unit (such asthe EMF for the Tota-light), choose the appropriate AC cable, either fromthis booklet or the full Lowel catalog.You can operate the light with 120Vlamps from 220V or 240V sources(such as are found abroad) with acommonly available electricallyapproved converter, though with lowered color temperature.

Limited Warranty

Lowel-Light Manufacturing, Inc. (“Lowel”) warrants thatits products (other than those products which by theirnature are consumed), under normal use in accordancewith operating instructions, will perform to the specifi-cations published by Lowel at the time of purchase, forthe following periods, from the date of purchase by theconsumer:

Five Yearswith respect to stands and poles;

Two Yearswith respect to lighting fixtures only;

One Yearwith respect to all other products (other than thosewhich by their nature are consumed).

Lowel warrants that its products which by their natureare consumed, such as gels and gaffer tape, under nor-mal use in accordance with instructions for use, willperform to the specifications published by Lowel at thetime of purchase.

In the event of a defect reported by the consumer withinthe applicable time period, if any, Lowel will, at itsoption, replace or repair the defective merchandise at nocharge to the consumer for either parts or labor.

The consumer should be aware that Lowel does notmanufacture lamps and therefore makes no warrantywith respect to these products. However, the warranty ofthe manufacturer of such products, if any, shall beassigned to the consumer if permitted by such manu-facturer.

Repairs and Replacement Parts

If Lowel shall, upon the request of the consumer, install,alter, modify, or repair any Lowel product, or componentthereof, then Lowel shall warrant such product or com-ponent from the date of such installation, alteration,modification, or repair, in accordance with the specifica-tions published by Lowel at such date, for the applica-ble time period, if any, for such product or component,and under the conditions, limitations, and proceduresset forth in this warranty. Lowel will not be responsiblefor any loss, damage or expense of any kind resultingfrom the installation, alteration, modification or repair ofany Lowel product by any entity other than Lowel.

WarrantyProcedure

In order to make a claim under the above warranty, the consumer must, within the applicable time period, ifany, bring or send, postage paid, the defective productand proof of purchase (or, if applicable, proof of instal-lation, alteration, modificaton, or repair by Lowel) to theconsumer’s Lowel dealer or to the Lowel Factory at 14058th Street Brooklyn, NY 11220-2552.

Warranty Exclusion

THIS WARRANTY IS THE ONLY WARRANTY MADE BYLOWEL WITH RESPECT TO LOWEL PRODUCTS ANDLOWEL DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES OF MER-CHANTABLILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULARPURPOSE AND ANY LIABILITY WITH RESPECT TOSAME WHETHER IN CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHER-WISE. IN NO EVENT SHALL LOWEL BE LIABLE FORLOST PROFITS, OR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGESINCURRED BY THE CONSUMER.

Some states do not allow limitations on how long animplied warranty lasts, and some states do not allow theexclusion or limitation of incidental consequential dam-ages, so the above limitation may not apply to you.
