An Introduction to Free or Low Cost OpportunitiesThis guide provides information on a selection of low cost and free recreation opportunities made available by the City of Richmond and its community partners as well as a showcase of some of the free community events happening throughout Winter 2020.

This Low Cost, No Cost guide is a companion piece to the Barrier Free Richmond Guide, which contains information on City and community resources available to individuals and families living in Richmond. View these guides online at richmond.ca/lowcostnocost.

The activities and events featured in this brochure are $10 or less. “Drop-in” means that there is no need to register ahead of time.

2019–2020 Recreation Fee Subsidy ProgramRichmond residents of all ages who are experiencing financial hardship are invited to apply for the Recreation Fee Subsidy Program. Applicants who qualify based on their financial situation will be able to access subsidized opportunities to participate in many programs and services offered by the City of Richmond and Richmond Community Associations and Societies at community centres, the Richmond Cultural Centre, aquatic centres, arenas, the Richmond Nature Park and heritage facilities, as well as selected opportunities at the Richmond Olympic Oval. City and Community Partner ServicesIn this guide you will find a list of featured low cost, no cost activities offered by the City of Richmond and its community partners. Aquatic ServicesRichmond’s Aquatic Services operates four facilities: two indoor facilities operating year round (Minoru Aquatic Centre and Watermania) and two outdoor seasonal pools (Steveston and South Arm).

The park, once part of the former Fantasy Gardens, has been partly restored providing a garden-like environment for all to enjoy that is also inviting for birds and pollinators. The restoration work has resulted in new ponds, improved pathways and ornamental and native planting. Benches and picnic tables will be installed soon and further work during the summer will allow the City to open more of the park.

Walk Richmond Walking SeriesInfo: richmond.ca/walk

These free guided walks featuring Richmond’s many parks and trails are offered all year long, for all ages. Walks are approximately one hour in length and include a warm-up, cool-down and stretch. Rain or shine. No registration required.

Karin Jones and Amy Malbeuf Take in this dual artist exhibition of identity exploration and cultural histories through sculpture and installation. Vancouver-based artist, Karin Jones, examines how historical narratives of slavery have shaped the identities of people of African descent living in North America while Nova Scotia-based artist, Amy Malbeuf, incorporates new materials with traditional beading and braiding techniques to create works that explore notions of Métis identity, community and relationship to the land. Exhibit runs from February 16–April 11.

Walk on Saturday, January 4 that leaves from Cambie Community Centre’s main entrance at 10:00am.

• Enjoy the latest gallery exhibition led by the artists Karin Jones and Amy Malbeuf with a tour and talk. An opening reception of the exhibition immediately following the tour on Saturday February 15 at 1:00pm.
