Dear Families
A warm welcome back to Term Two. I hope you were able to spend some quality time with
family and friends. I look forward to seeing many of you at the special Mass this Friday and
afterwards at the morning tea in the Ahern Centre, when we will be celebrating our
mothers, grandmothers, carers, aunties and many other significant female figures in our
lives.
WINTER UNIFORM WINTER UNIFORM WINTER UNIFORM WINTER UNIFORM The students are certainly looking extremely smart in their winter
uniforms and I thank all our parents and care givers for ensuring the children returned to
school fully prepared to delve straight into learning programs prepared by the hard working
teaching staff.
THREE YEAR OLD PRE KINDY PROGRAMTHREE YEAR OLD PRE KINDY PROGRAMTHREE YEAR OLD PRE KINDY PROGRAMTHREE YEAR OLD PRE KINDY PROGRAM: We are on the cusp of starting up our second
Pre Kindy Day, on a Friday, but we just need 4 more students who have already turned three
to begin the program with the first intake so that it makes the program financially viable.
We have a list of students confirmed on the list but they have not yet turned three so they
will be included to the cohort as they become eligible. If you know of someone in our
School or Parish community, neighbours, family or friends who might be interested in the
program could you please ask them to contact the office immediately.
NAPLAN: NAPLAN: NAPLAN: NAPLAN: A couple of tips for parents of students who will be involved in NAPLAN next
week. As formal exams are an inevitable part of schooling for most children, I thought
parents might like a few ideas to help reduce the amount of stress their child experiences
around NAPLAN and make it a helpful learning experience for them:
◊ DiscussDiscussDiscussDiscuss a “try your best” attitude to exams in your home if NAPLAN is mentioned
and be clear to your children that you are proud of the effort they put in and that you
are less concerned about the outcome (ie the marks they get and how they compare
to others—as many factors out of your child’s control affect these).
◊ Explain Explain Explain Explain how exams are at least a little bit stressful for everyone—maybe share an
appropriate story about a time when you had to complete an exam and found it
stressful but you just tried your best and got through it (this ‘normalising’ of stress is
helpful for many children).
◊ Plan a Reward Plan a Reward Plan a Reward Plan a Reward Ask your children to come up with ideas for activities you could
do as a family on the weekend after NAPLAN—discuss it as a “reward” for your child
trying their best with NAPLAN. This will reinforce your “try your best” attitude to them
and give them something else to think about and look forward to after the week of
NAPLAN.

TERM DATESTERM DATESTERM DATESTERM DATES: All Catholic Schools have just been informed by the Acting Executive Director, that the last day for the
students in Term Four is Fri 7 Dec.
WEBSITEWEBSITEWEBSITEWEBSITE: The website is ticking along smoothly and we have recently added a new section “OUR STUDENTS”, to
showcase the many mental health and wellbeing programs that we run at the school. This is the current list of programs we
offer our students. The following summary is taken directly from the website: ‘We are a KidsMatter school and implement mental health and wellbeing programs from Kindergarten through to Year Six. PATHS – Aussie Optimism – Rock & Water – Respect Matters – URSTRONG Friendology – Fun Friends – Seasons for Growth – EdConnect – Buddy Classes Initiative - Levels of Behaviour Framework – Sensory Garden – Sensory Room – Safe4Kids which specialises in Child Protection Education.’ We have also added three drop down tabs:
1. SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER
2. SOCIAL WORKER FOCUS GROUPS
3. MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS with additional information to explain the different focus areas.
SR LEONIE O’BRIEN LEARNING CENTRE: SR LEONIE O’BRIEN LEARNING CENTRE: SR LEONIE O’BRIEN LEARNING CENTRE: SR LEONIE O’BRIEN LEARNING CENTRE: In the last few weeks, whilst the majority of us were having a lovely holiday,
Mrs Gaye Margetic was busy revamping the Library, which is housed along with our Italian Classes, in the Sr Leonie O’Brien
Learning Centre. We have moved the Italian Learning Area to the back corner so Signora Rossi has her own space to work
with the students and we have created a corner next to Italian where our parent helpers have ample space to spread out a
bit. We have had a wonderful response from parents to assist with the regular shelving of books and also with the new
labelling of all the Junior Fiction Picture Books. It is a hive of activity and Mrs Margetic always has plenty for new parent
helpers to do. Please feel free to pop in and speak to Mrs Margetic if you would like to help out too.
SENSORY GARDENSENSORY GARDENSENSORY GARDENSENSORY GARDEN: I invite you to wander down the path, past the Administration Block, to take a look at the beautiful
Sensory Garden which has recently been completed. Mrs Jacqui Chivell was instrumental in successfully applying for a
grant offered by the Community Funding Program which is grant-based and assists community groups and schools with
projects, events and activities that develop and enhance the Joondalup community. Mrs Renee Haynes & Mrs Victoria
Walker are the creators of our lovely Sensory Garden and some of the bigger jobs were attended to by Mr Chris Ridout. They
saw a need and have done something wonderful for our students. The Sensory Garden provides students with experiences
to make links between social and emotional learning and the environment. It is an outdoor learning area that was designed
not only to stimulate the senses but also to incorporate social and emotional development.

As part of the annual LifeLink Appeal, Archbishop Costelloe and Bishop Sproxton are asking Catholic school students to give
a gold coin donation towards receiving and creating an authentic LifeLink card, which will eventually be distributed to
parishioners attending Mass at their local parish for the Archbishop’s annual ‘Christmas Appeal for LifeLink’, which will be
held later this year. The cards will convey the student’s understanding of the work of one of the LifeLink agencies, and carry
a message from each student to someone in need in the community who is helped by a LifeLink agency. Once created, the
cards will be presented to the Archbishop by the Liwara Social Justice Ministry at the LifeLink Launch on Wednesday June
6th. The card distribution and gold coin donations will be managed by your child’s class teacher.

Mother’s Day ReflectionsMother’s Day ReflectionsMother’s Day ReflectionsMother’s Day Reflections
Mother's Day is a time of recognition, celebration and
reflection. With this in mind I asked the Parenting Ideas
expert team members, who also happen to be awesome
mums, to share their thoughts about parenting and
mothering. I think you'll love what they've written.

I have four amazing children. Three boys aged 12, 6 and 3 and a girl aged 8.
What do you love about parenting? What do you love about parenting? What do you love about parenting? What do you love about parenting?
I love seeing my children grow into their personalities and being part of helping them find their spark. I love the simple things, whether
it is girl-time doing the shopping or chats at night on the bed with the younger ones about their day. I love seeing them push through
and achieve things that they thought they couldn't. One thing I am big on is being present and being there, whether it is at their school
event days or cheering them on where possible from the sidelines. And I am a big fan of a warm hug.

My mum taught me the importance of family and of friends. To always make time for dinners, holidays and time spent with those you
love. She taught me that nurturing our relationships throughout life will always give us the greatest rewards. She taught me how to
entertain well, to always have extra food and drink and to always have my door open to others. She taught me the value of being gener-
ous and the importance of helping others in need. She taught me the importance of finding work that you enjoy and how this can en-
rich your role as a mother. And she taught me that being a mum is the most amazing gift you can be given. Sometimes it's clouded by
the most crushing of fear, but ultimately it offers us the greatest of joy.

The best piece of parenting advice I have received is to not stress too much. We are all doing the very best we can on any given day
with what we have. Sometimes, we will be exhausted and if all we can manage for dinner is scrambled eggs on toast, then that’s okay.
Don’t beat yourself up and certainly avoid the comparison trap. Don’t compare yourself to other parents and what they are doing. Re-
member, parenting is a full time gig, 24/7. Just do your best and make sure you look after yourself too.

Best piece of mothering advice you can give others?Best piece of mothering advice you can give others?Best piece of mothering advice you can give others?Best piece of mothering advice you can give others?
One of the most important ideas to teach our kids is that it’s completely natural to feel a whole range of feelings, that all feelings are
okay and that all feelings are normal. It’s important for them to know that while feeling happy is wonderful, no-one feels happy all the
time. Teach them to notice and name their feelings, to tolerate the discomfort of difficult feelings, to express their feelings in healthy
ways and that, although some feelings feel hard to bare, they always pass. All of these lessons are priceless.
Our facial expressions, tone of voice and words all contribute to the empathy we share with our kids and are central to validating how
they’re feeling. Whether we agree with them or not, our validation shows them that we get it and that we know it’s hard. Validation is a
first step to helping them feel understood and able to begin winding back their emotional responses.
This is all great advice and wonderful reflections about parenting and being a mum from the Parenting Ideas team. This Mother's Day, I
invite you to reflect on what you enjoy about parenting; to think about the lessons you’ve learned from your own family of origin; to
consider the great advice you’ve received along the way and to think about the learnings that you can share with others. It’s good to sit
back, take stock and be grateful for what we have, what we’ve experienced and what we can share with others.

All books sold will benefit the school as we receive a percentage of the total value of all
books. Books sold will support the school to stock up on resources to enrich your
children's education. Best of all, the Book Fair will provide your children access to more
books. More books means more choice, which means children get to read the books
they want to read. The right book can ignite a passion for reading, so we encourage
families to work together to create a reading culture at home. Reading expands the
mind, nourishes the imagination, and opens a world of possibilities.
Research shows that parental involvement at home, independent reading at school,
and the power of book choice all help make frequent readers. The Book Fair is the
perfect place for your child to discover new books and ignite their love for reading. All
children will be given opportunities to view books and complete ‘wish lists’ before the
Book Fair commences.
