Wine #1

2011 Castell di Almansa Reserva………. $13.50

– 87 pts. AG – Rimbey Liquor Store

–Almansa, La Mancha, Spain

The Castillo de Almansa Reserva is a blend of 60/20/20, monastrell, tempranillo and garnacha tintorera and all matured in American oak casks for one about a year. The attack is supple, the textures smooth with medium rich, juicy, smoky, spicy, plummy fruit flavours. Excellent value in what is an everyday red for chicken or simple tomato based pasta dishes.

“Wine improves with age. The older I get, the better I like it.”

Wine #2

2014 El Petit Bonhomme.......... $14.50

– Rimbey Liquor Mart

– Jumilla, Spain

A lovely easy-drinking wine! Quebec-born Nathalie Bonhomme, now established in Spain, has a strong 20 years’ experience in the wine world. Produced with Miguel Gil of Bodegas Juan Gil, her “Petit Bonhomme” is a flavourful blend of the Monastrell, Grenache and Syrah varietals, to serve slightly fresh to maximize its fruity expression.

“I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food.”

- W.C. Fields, circa 1930’s

Wine #3

2012 Phenolia Malbec Marselan………. $16.95 – The Liquor Store, Ponoka “A tannic red wine with tarry black fruit and toasty oak. Full-bodied and savoury. Needs cellar time. Then when you open it decant 2 hours and enjoy with rare filet mignon.”

“What wine goes with Captain Crunch?”

- George Carlin

Wine #4

2010 Il Fauno di Arcanum……….$28

– 92 pts. WS – Costco, Red Deer

– Tuscany, Italy

"A round version, featuring rich cherry fruit mingling with an earthy element. Turns firm and dry on the finish, with gum-coating tannins, yet this remains persistent and long, revealing a tobacco accent. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2017 through 2026."

“I can certainly see that you know your wine. Most of the guests who stay here wouldn’t know the difference between Bordeaux and Claret.”

- Basil Fawlty, “Fawlty Towers”

Wine #5

2011 Luigi Bosca de Sangre………. $24

– 90 pts. NM – SideStreet Liquor Store, Rimbey

– Mendoza, Argentina

– Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah

“A tannic red wine with tarry black fruit and toasty oak. Full-bodied and savoury. Needs cellar time. Then when you open it decant 2 hours and enjoy with rare filet mignon.”

“The best fertilizer for the vine is the shadow of the owner.”

Wine #6

2013 Michael David Winery Petite Petit………. $27

– 92 pts. WE – Sobey’s, Sylvan Lake

– Lodi, California, USA

“The dark, inky wine that fills your glass of Petite Petit will capture you at first whiff! Brimming with aromas of dark fruit, vanilla bean and cocoa, this wine packs one jammy punch. Abundant fruit flavors and rich tannins create an exquisite blend of Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot.”

“It doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full. There is clearly room for more wine.”

Wine #7

2010 Chateau St. Cosme,………. $55

– 96 WS #23 Top 100 of 2014, The Liquor Store, Ponoka

– Chateauneuf de Pape, Rhone Valley, France

"Densely packed, with a core of baker’s chocolate, espresso, bay leaf, licorice root, black currant preserves and steeped fig. A strong, almost rigid charcoal spine carries the finish, surrounded by ample flesh, lingering minerality and a smoldering feel. A backward, old-school version built for long cellaring." Blend: 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 3% Clairette

“If you have to ask if it’s too early to drink wine, you’re an amateur and we can’t be friends.”

Wine #8

2010 Fontanafredda Barolo………. $44

– 93 pts. RP, WS – Liquor Crossing, Red Deer

– Serralunga D’Alba, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

"Dense and chewy, this red evokes cherry, tar, spice, earth and underbrush flavors. Stiff and drying on the finish now, yet has fine length and a balanced feel. Best from 2018 through 2033. "

“There comes a time in the day when no matter what the question is, the answer is always wine.”

Wine #9

2013 Jamieson Ranch Vineyards Double Lariat………. $49

– 94 pts. WA – Costco, Red Deer

– Napa Valley, California, USA

"A super-sexy, seductive style of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Double Lariat has sweet tannins, lush black cherry and a blackcurrant fruit, no hard edges and touches of chocolate and espresso in a complex, plump, plush style. This is irresistible wine and at this price point a no-brainer. Drink it over the next decade."

“I tried cooking with wine. Didn’t go so well. After 5 glasses, I forgot why I was even in the kitchen.”

Wine #10

2010 Montes Alpha M 2010………. $75

– 96 pts. WS – The Liquor Store, Ponoka

– Rapel, Chile

“Beautifully concentrated, showing a floral undertone to the rich yet racy wild berry, cassis and damson plum skin fruit character that's tightly wound around fine tannins. The finish is long and compact, but needs time in the cellar to fully shine. Best from 2014 through 2020. 500 cases imported.”

“Men are like wine – some turn to vinegar, but the best improve with age.”

― Pope John XXIII

Wine #11

2012 Amon-Ra………. $78

– 97+ pts. WA – Liquor Crossing, Red Deer

–Ebenezer, Barossa Valley, Australia

“Very deep purple-black in color, the 2012 Amon Ra reveals intense notes of blackcurrant cordial, blackberry compote and licorice with nuances of cloves, allspice, chocolate box and salami as well as a whiff of espresso. The 100% Shiraz palate offers a beast of a wine that is densely packed with black fruit and baking spice flavors and is supported with firm, grainy tannins and crisp acid through to a finish with excellent persistence. Drink it 2015 to 2025+.”
