TRANSCRIPT

The film has an awful lot of clever panning and long shots. In the shot above it shows an establishing shot

used to set the location of the short film. Also it confirms to the audience how deserted and lonely the

place looks, as the shot is empty and still and shows not life just yet. The long shot of the fields and for the

establishing shots is a beautiful piece of cinematography.

Camerawork

This shot shows aspects of the mise-en-scene e.g. costumes. The costumes are one of the main factors when trying to represent

the character correctly and from the shots shown above this character is portrayed as maybe violent from the blood on his hands in the first shot, intimidating from the second shot from

the tattoo’s which are actually misleading as they represent someone balanced and loving as he has scales and below “mom”

with a heart.

.

Mise-en-scene

The editing in this film has been made very clean cut. Fast cut shots have been used to build suspense, the film is supposed to make the audience feel tense and not sure of what is going on.

So watching this man glance at the raven it looks like he has been caught out for what he has done. They use a reverse shot

to see the facial expression of the man and the raven, to intensify what is happening in the shot. The editing also speeds

up at this point to increase the tension and anticipation.

Editing

The camera pans to a beeping phone that has probably lost signal which shows the desperation that the character is in. There is a diegetic sound of a woman screaming in

pain and a close up of a cloth covered in blood which adds to the dark theme being portrayed in the film. The sound we hear of the single cawing raven adds eeriness to the scenes. It is the loudest sound throughout the film and we can see that the bird

makes the man in the film nervous. Almost as if the birds loud echoing sound will give away what the man is doing to anyone who is within a close enough distance to hear the animal. It adds the element of horror as it is very often a sound used in dark films,

a screeching caw signifying something bad is going to happen.

Sound

The close up of human legs covered in blood and props such as knife and cloth makes the audience expect the worse. However the end contradicts the conventions of a horror film as the lighting changes creating a happy

atmosphere in comparison to the beginning of the film where the lighting is dim. This demonstrations how babies brings warmth into adults lives. The baby is shown as a sign of happiness as it’s the first time that a dialogue is

used which shows how babies bring people. Therefore I believe the genre of this film is horror/ elements of thriller

Genre

Because this is a silent film, the camera tells the story for us. The director didn't have any dialogue in the beginning – just the woman screaming. The narrative is being told by the man's POV. The story is centred around what's happening to him, so the characters play a vital part. The audience will understand the narrative when the baby is revealed – putting all the clues together.
