What is the purpose?What is the purpose?

» This Love and Logic method causes the child to see their parent as the "good guy" and the child's poor decision as the "bad guy." When done on a regular basis, kids develop an internal voice that says, "I wonder how much pain I'm going to cause for myself with my next decision?" Kids who develop this internal voice become more capable of standing up to peer pressure.

» It's great with the older kids. Finn just turned three and responds very well to it now. I think there are some pros and cons to it. The biggest pro is, it works. I have some standards that I use, like "would you like to walk or would you like me to carry you?" and some things are no- brainers, like "you can stay in our yard or we can go play inside, it's your choice." Also, what he says about giving lots of choices throughout the day is very effective. I can't tell you how many tantrums I've headed off just by letting him feel like he has some say in things. "Put these shoes on" is likely to be met with "NO!" but "Do you want your black shoes or your green shoes? You pick." almost always get us out the door on time.

» The con to it is, it can be really hard to come up with a logical consequence or two appropriate choices on the spur of the moment. I know he says you can defer a consequence to give yourself time to think, but that doesn't really work with a three year old who really needs immediate discipline.
