RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

Once again, we find ourselves in the season of Lent, the forty days (plus Sundays)

that prepare us for the great mystery that is Easter. Here is a wonderful description of

this season adapted from the Companion to the Book of Common Worship (Louisville:

Geneva Press, 2003, pp. 110-111):

What we hear during Lent is the power and possibility … that the way of the cross, the way to

Easter, is through death. To appropriate the new life that is beyond the power of death means we

must die with Christ who was raised for us. To live for Christ, we must die with him. New life requires

a daily surrendering of the old life, letting go of the present order, so that we may embrace the new

humanity. “I die every day!” asserts Paul (I Corinthians 15:31). Resurrection necessitates death as a

preceding act. The Church’s peculiar Lenten claim is that in dying we live, that all who are baptized

into Christ are baptized into his death…. In order to embrace the resurrection, we must experience

the passion (or death) of Jesus. The way of the cross, the way to Easter, is through the death of the

“old self.” In dying, we live.

Therefore, at the beginning of Lent, we are reminded that our possessions, our rulers, our em-

pires, our projects, our families and even our lives do not last forever. “You are dust, and to dust you

shall return,” we say as our foreheads are marked with ashes. Throughout the weeks of Lent, we are

asked to discover again what being a follower of Jesus means. During the final week, Holy Week, we

hear the full story of Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection. As his followers, we travel Christ’s

path of servanthood through the Lord’s Supper (on Maundy Thursday) and suffering on the cross

(Good Friday) toward the glory of Easter (the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday).

May this month be a time of reflection and renewal, as you contemplate the power of God’s

love that is willing to die for us, so that we might know in our own lives the life that is stronger than

death. May you have a blessed and holy Lent.

“God does not promise that we will be spared suffering, but does promise to be with us in our suffering. Trusting that promise, we are enabled to bear the unbearable and recognize God’s sustaining nearness in pain, in sickness,

and in injury.” (UCC Book of Worship) Highland’s next Healing & Wholeness service will be Thursday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m. Through prayer, liturgy and music, we will seek the strength of God’s presence for meeting the challenges that face us. All are welcome.

Please join us for a Lenten study on forgiveness! On Wednesday, March 7, 14, & 21, Dr. Lynn March and Megan McCarty will be lead-ing a study of Marjorie Thompson’s Forgiveness: A Lenten Study. This book provides a biblical study of forgiveness, reconcilia-tion and restoration. We will also add an introduction to TonGlen, a meditation practice of giving and receiving forgiveness. This class will meet in the office conference room from 5:30-6:30 pm. Copies of the book may be obtained from Amazon.com; please read chap-ters 1 & 2 prior to the first meeting and bring something to journal in.

Taizé + Labyrinth = Lenten Prayer. At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, you are invited to walk the newly-refurbished labyrinth in our gym as musicians from our congregation accompany us with music from the Taizé tradition. At its most essential, the labyrinth is prayer in motion. Come and make this part of your Lenten journey. (Paper finger labyrinths will be available for those who prefer to remain seated.)

Throughout Lent, Children in 1st-5th grade are invited to color Len-ten-themed posters while they listen to the sermon. Children are invited to exit the sanctuary immediately following time with young disciples. Then, they’ll go to one of the conference rooms behind the sanctuary and return to their seats during the doxology or the final hymn (whenever the poster is finished). We believe that for many children, keeping their hands “busy” frees up their ears and minds to focus on the words they hear in worship. Please contact Doodle if you have any questions.

Babysitting will be provided in the children’s wing for children 5th grade and younger.

OWLS is a group for adults and they will gather on Wednesday, March 21st. OWLS will gather for food and fellow-

ship and will welcome Karen Newton from the University of Louisville Health Services for “Active Mind: A Taste of

Koru Mindfulness.” OWLS begins with a social time at 11:30 am, a light lunch is served at 11:45 am, and the pro-

gram begins around noon. Lunch is $5. Please RSVP to the church office at [email protected] or (502)

A group of men will be gathering on Thursday, March 8th at 7:30pm for a beverage and some good conversation at

Monnik Beer Co. Come join us. No agenda, just conversation in good company.

On March 6, 7pm-9p, Knit Wits will be held at the home of Bo

Schindler.

We had a great time at our February Parents’ Gathering (for par-

ents with children 5th grade and younger). Continue to check our

newsletter and Bulletin for another gathering in April or May!

The children of the Nursery and Weekday School have been hard at work

exploring all the properties of PAINT! We often ask ourselves how we can

say “Yes” to children more; to their interests, to their ideas, to their curiosi-

ties and inquiries. We adults tend to get a little uptight when it comes to

messes, but children need time and space to experiment to increase their

understanding of what this world has to offer them. So how do we say “Yes”

to kids, even when messes are involved? We create a space meant for messy

exploration, plan for it to happen, stock it with interesting materials, then

stand back and observe. The result? PAINTLANDIA! Our art studio has been

transformed into a space fully ready for messy paint exploration. Check out

our pictures to see how our little scientists gathered some new data about

paint!

Do you have any little scientists who need a space that says “Yes” to their inquiries and new discoveries? We are cur-

rently enrolling for next fall and hope you’ll join us!

Smoketown Mobile Pantry Grace Hope Presbyterian Church is host for the Dare2Care Smoketown Mobile Pantry and they have invited Highland to partner with them. Come out to distribute food and serve our neighbors on March 20th at 1:30 pm with Grace Hope Presbyterian Church at 702 E. Breckenridge St./Clay St. (in the church parking lot). The pantry runs unless it is 20 degrees or less. To learn more or to be added to the volunteer email list, contact Megan McCarty at [email protected].

STITCH Sewing Together in the Caring Highlands, is a partnership between Highland Presbyterian and Kentucky Refugee Ministries. We teach sewing to KRM women who have settled in Louisville from many countries. In the past six and a half years, we have had over 120 sewing machines donated to our program. We are able to give machines to our students who show a talent and interest in sewing in their homes. STITCH is looking for a volunteer who can help us with simple sewing machine repairs and general maintenance of our donated machines. If you or someone you know has an interest in and the ability to work on sewing machines, we’d love to speak with you. We could use help one or two times a month. Please contact either STITCH Co-Director Anna Gray Slagle ([email protected]) or Janet Raderer ([email protected]).

Family Overnight and Outdoor Worship – April 21st

and 22nd

Everyone from Highland Presbyterian Church is invit-

ed to join us for a family cookout and overnight the

night before HPC’s annual outdoor worship service!

The overnight begins April 21st at 2:00 p.m. We’ll

have Saturday evening activities such as gaga ball,

soccer, a hayride, and a campfire with s'mores. Prices

below include Saturday dinner and lodging. We’ll stay

at Cedar Ridge Camp. Families can choose to stay in

one of 3 locations:

Hilltop pavilion at $20 per tent (bathrooms with

showers are located a short walk away).

Cottage – $12 per person in a large cottage that

sleeps 16 total. You would be sharing the one-room cottage with several other people. The bathrooms (including

showers) are a short walk away. The Cottage has air conditioning.

Lodge - $60 for a 4-person room and $80 for a 6-person room. The Lodge has air conditioning and bathrooms in

the same building.

Sunday Worship (April 22nd) will be at 10:00 at the Outdoor Chapel near Hilltop Pavilion. Even if your family choos-

es not to come for the overnight, please join us for outdoor worship! Following Worship, we’ll have lunch in Hopkins

Hall. Fellowship Committee will provide grilled hotdogs and hamburgers (and vege-options). Families are encour-

aged to bring a side-dish to share. (If you come to the Family overnight on Saturday, we will have refrigerator space

available to store your side dish for Sunday lunch). Following lunch, we’ll have more outdoor games and canoeing

for everyone!

If you plan to come to the family

overnight, please let Doodle know

and get your money to the church

office by April 1st. Scholarships are

available for families who would like

to participate and who need the as-

sistance.

Youth Group Schedule All Youth groups will be on their regular days at their usual times during March (except Middle Schoolers on March 18th). We WILL NOT have youth group on Sunday evening, April 1st.

A Wrinkle in Time Our Middle School (6th and 7th grade) Youth group will be having a “Wrinkle in Time” youth group on Sunday March 18th. We’ll gather immediately after 11:00 worship, have lunch, and then go see the movie and have a discussion after that! Participants will still go to choir at 5:00 and have dinner at 6:00 (as usual!). Middle School Youth will not have a formal “youth group” time that evening, but 6th and 7th graders may hang out in the youth space following dinner from 6:30-7:30 if they choose. The cost of this event is $20 per youth (youth will still need to bring money if they want snacks in the theater). Please let Doodle know you are participating by March 1st. A few cop-ies of the book are available in the Youth Space for those who want to read ahead!

The Good Place Our Junior High Youth will meet at regular times in March and continue our discussion

of The Gospel According to “The Good Place.” We’ll also be looking at traditional im-

ages and ideas about Heaven and Hell. Where do we get our ideas about Heaven and

Hell? What is Biblical? What seams reasonable? Join us throughout March as we con-

tinue this discussion.

Zootopia Senior High Youth (10th-12th graders) will spend time in March looking at racism and

vocation. How can all that be in one movie? Just what does Judy Hopps know? And

how dangerous is it to be someone that others tell you shouldn’t be? Who exactly is

Nick Wilde? And will he help or hurt Hopps as she enforces the law in Zootopia! It is

not necessary to see this movie before we discuss it, but it helps! The movie is cur-

rently streaming on Netflix.

The time of Lent is one of reflection and contemplation. For the Children’s Music Ministry, we are reflecting on many things…the bold energy that warmer weather brings to children, the celebration of new life in our church through baptisms, new plants springing into bloom, new music to be made, and the upcoming Palm Parade on Palm Sunday. We are spending more time with all three children’s choirs making music together. One of the songs that we are using for this combined time is “Up Above My Head.” This fun gospel song allows us the opportunity to play percussion and practice our improvisation skills. We have also written new verses for this song. We hope to share this song with the congregation at our Spring Celebration.

Just a reminder that our children’s spring musical, “A Table for Five…Thousand!”, will be on March 4th at 3:00 p.m. Join us in the Fellowship Hall for this fun re-telling of the story of loaves and fish.
