engagement. Collegiate’s core principles and values stand the test of time and define what it means to ‘Be Collegiate’ – to cherish and celebrate the individuality of every student; to embrace a model of behavior and a determination for excellence; to value inspiring relationships, personal growth through challenge and respect for differences; and, to be shaped by tradition, then to carry it on and give back. Our community successes – past, present and future – are dependent upon the continued generosity and support of friends and benefactors, people like you who believe in the school’s enduring mission and commitment to excellence. Through the Annual Report that follows, we are proud to share with you a snapshot of the vibrant Collegiate experience that your support makes possible.

In 2009, our Upper School students volunteered over 4 ,000 hours to Habitate For Humanity.

While a series of unprecedented weather phenomenon punctuated Louisville Collegiate School’s 93rd year, neither hurricane winds nor a devastating ice storm could interrupt the positive momentum of a remarkable year on our historic Glenmary campus. The Collegiate community’s collective pursuit of academic excellence, character development, artistry, athleticism and service produced many memorable moments during the 2008-2009 school year: we launched a wildly successful new Junior Kindergarten program for four-year-olds in the fall; we worked collaboratively with a marketing firm from New Hampshire to create new, dynamic and inspiring admission and marketing elements that capture the essence of the Collegiate experience; our sixth-grade interdisciplinary program, ‘Exploring the Classics,’ received national recognition in Independent School magazine; we raised the funds to build a fieldhouse at our Champion’s Trace athletic facility; our Upper School Advanced Placement program merited national A.P. Scholar recognition for nearly half the senior class; our Amazon field hockey and Titan lacrosse teams claimed State runner-up titles; and, The Laramie Project opened to rave reviews and standing room only crowds in the Black Box Theatre. Collegiate is a community rich with history, tradition and academic excellence. Our clearly articulated JK–12th grade curriculum prepares students for the challenges of the 21st Century, and to ‘Stand Out’ with the academic foundation, leadership skills and moral compass necessary for life-long learning, civic involvement and global

Throughout the 2008-2009 school year, the Board of Trustees was involved in a series of exciting developments at Louisville Collegiate School. As you view these pages and other publications, you will see the vibrant, new brand identity of Collegiate. The decision to rebrand flowed directly from the Strategic Plan approved by the Board of Trustees in November 2007. The Strategic Plan identifies seven strategic goals to advance Collegiate's standing in an increasingly competitive school market. Early in the 2008-2009 school year, Collegiate enlisted the expertise of Griffin York & Krause, a marketing firm based in Manchester, New Hampshire, to update the school's corporate identity. Firm President Travis York and his team have transformed Collegiate's image to reflect the excitement, tradition and mission of the finest educational institution in Louisville, Kentucky. In April, members of the Board of Trustees sponsored “An Evening with Tori Murden McClure ’81.” During the evening event in the Kentucky Center’s Bomhard Theatre, McClure was interviewed by Bob Edwards. McClure, an alumna of Collegiate recently authored ‘A Pearl in the Storm,’ a memoir detailing her physical and emotional journey as the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Board also approved a series of capital projects in 2008-09, including the renovation of the Anna E. Wilton Admission House and the construction of a Field-house at Champion’s Trace. Both projects will enhance the aesthetic and organizational traits of our academic and athletic campuses. The Board of Trustees also recognizes and thanks Sandra Frazier, Nancy Kiesow-Webb,

Kathy Oyler and Bill Street, who have ended their tenures of service as trustees. For his service and generosity to Louisville Collegiate School, Street has been designated a Director Emeritus on the board. As a member of the Collegiate community, I invite you to join me in celebrating the achievements and excitement of the past year.

In 2008, the Lower School welcomed its youngest students in the new Junior Kindergarten. Following a ribbon cutting ceremony in the fall, the four and five year-olds created a castle, dressing as royals and comparing different story

versions of “Cinderella.” The class also visited Upper School science teacher, Kevin Jackson, and his assortment of reptiles. Students were able to hold and pet several snakes while learning about the animals’ diets and habitats. Having “researched” snakes with librarian Frankie Moore, before their visit, Mr. Jackson’s menagerie was the perfect culmination of their herpetology unit.

Twice a week, Collegiate’s Kindergarten class enjoyed world language instruction, weaving linguistic lessons with cultural facts. Lisa Watkins’ class learned the names of Chinese foods, dining etiquette and how to use chopsticks as they read ‘The Story of

Chopsticks’ by Ying-Chang-Compestin. Kindergarteners were also treated to a Chinese hand puppet show performed by Upper School Chinese language students which told the legendary story of The Moon Lady, which is at the heart of the annual Chinese Moon Festival. Another Lower School class partnered with older students this year, when Jessica Briggs’ 1st grade class enjoyed lunch and math lessons from Molly Prince’s 8th grade geometry students, observ-ing all of the different shapes found in their lunch bags (square sandwiches, oval grapes, rectangular cheese slices and triangular crackers). Afterwards, the 1st grade students tallied the different types of geometric figures and made a bar chart to show visually the frequency of shapes. Visits from community leaders broaden the perspectives of Lower School students and integrate the school’s mission, which seeks to develop students into leaders of their local and global communities. Mrs. Barbara Wheeler, a member of Mayor Jerry Abramson’s council, visited Hannah Schardein’s 2nd grade class, to help celebrate "Read Across America" month. Later, Bud Schardein, executive director of Metropolitan Sewer Department, spoke

to second graders about his role in local government taking care of the sewers and

flood water. Children were amazed with the complexity and importance of Louisville’s Ohio River and wastewater system. The students in Susanne Temple’s 3rd grade class

started their own company in 2008-09 dubbed “Save Our Amazing Rainforests” (S.O.A.R.) The students earned money by performing chores and tasks at home and in turn donated their funds to help stop rainforest destruction. Every student in the class played an active role in S.O.A.R. whether as an attorney, researcher or treasurer, to name just a few of the jobs. Company meetings were supplemented with a “rainforest” math curriculum, a science study of rainforest species and a unit on economics where the third grade students learned about scarcity and opportunity cost. The class also received a special visit from Congressman John Yarmuth, who heard presentations from the students about rainforests destruction and answered questions about what types of legislation can be created to prevent such destruction. The 4th grade ventured outside of the classroom in February when they traveled to “School at the Louisville Zoo,” for daily instruction in the zoo’s “living classroom” with “hands and

minds-on” lessons. Students observed intricate gorilla communication, discovered the behavioral adaptation of camels in the harsh desert climate and explored the communal world

of the penguin. Each “Zoo School” day centered on a unique ecosystem, ranging from the rainforest to the desert, during which Zoo educators presented relevant information, Zoo keepers

introduced students to their animals and “Zoo students” discovered the diversity of life that exists at the zoo and around the globe. 5th grade students took on the roles of forensic scientists when they were called upon to help solve the case of a kidnapped dog named Magic. Dr. Stephanie Walton, a Collegiate parent, led the students in the investigation. They conducted litmus tests on a liquid left at the crime scene, chromatography tests on the ink from a kidnap note and studied dog and human hair samples taken from a suspect's jacket. During another science unit, the 5th grade explored the climactic and geological conditions of the Great Flood of 1937, the eruption of Mount St. Helens and Hurricane Katrina. Teacher Melissa Martin, led students in discussions about fault lines, pressure systems and climactic changes. Working cooperatively, student groups chose a “natural disaster” about which they created elaborate PowerPoint presentations, explaining the scientific processes at work and the numerous effects of each. Along with the oral presentations, students created 3-dimensional displays of disasters, allowing them to artistically express the power of each type of disaster.

A new humanities block called ‘Exploring the Classics’ (ETC) was introduced for the 2008-09 school year, allowing 6th grade students to make connections between English, History and Latin through hands-on activities and individual inquiry. Students explored Greco-Roman history and mythology, English readings of Ulysses and Julius Caesar and other classical themes. Students completed their year by creating a “Living Museum”, dressing as characters and designing models depicting a civilization from 2000 BC - 1500 AD. Students constructed models of aqueducts, slave girls running from the erupting Vesuvius, and knights in shining tin-foil armor. The new program was featured in the Spring 2009 issue of ‘Independent School’ Magazine.

The 7th grade enjoyed a surprise trip to Worldfest on the Belvedere, where students saw firsthand the diversity of Louisville’s immigrant population. Five continents were represented through music, art, and food. Students heard the “oompahs” of German brass as well as the pulsing polyrhythms of Afro-Cuban

jazz. They saw the block-printed prayer flags made by Tibetan Buddhist monks and jewelry from Peruvian artisans, and sampled Mexican agua de fruta and Italian sorbets and gelati. While there, the students had the opportunity to speak with Mayor Jerry Abramson.

English teacher John Herzfeld was selected as one of 30 teachers nationwide to participate in the 2008 Toyota International Teacher Program to the Galapagos Islands. Herzfeld began his journey in the Everglades and proceeded onto Quito, Ecuador and the Galapagos. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and the Institute of International Education sponsor this opportunity that brings

teachers to World Heritage Sites, where they learn about sustainability and stewardship methods. Observing the delicate ecosystems and the booming tourism of the area, Herzfeld returned to campus to share his lessons from the Galapagos, an area trying to strike a balance between tradition and modernity. Janice Mulligan’s 7th grade science class studied the history and science of space exploration this year, with emphasis on the U.S. space program and how rockets work. One of the goals of the unit was to design a rocket using bottles that would stay in the air at least 5 seconds. Seth Harding, Evan O’Leary, Tyler Sullivan and Erik Overdyk achieved the longest time at 5.15 seconds with a self-built craft that included fins and nosecone designed to guide the rocket’s path, and the proper amount of fuel (water) that would achieve a proper height. The Middle School MathCounts team earned 5th place at the Regional level competition this year while Cason Reily and Matthew Pearson were among the top-scoring 20 individuals of the 146 students competing, qualifying them for the state competition. The Middle School Quick Recall team placed 2nd in the District and 3rd in the Regional competition. Also,

Susan Robbins’ room was trans-formed into a Paris neighborhood when her 8th grade French class created their very own French city. As part of a study of French city life, students constructed homes, the Louvre Museum, a café and other structures while practicing vocabulary necessary to get around with a representative from the city's 'Office de Tourisme.’

Middle School students who participated in written assessments that tested knowledge in social studies, math, language arts and science placed 3rd in the District and 4th in the Regional Governor’s Cup. Ethan Perellis was recently featured in the Fall 2008 Gilda’s Club newsletter for his donation to the organization that provides emotional and social support for people with cancer and their family and friends. Ethan collected over 300 books to help start the libraries for both children and adults at the club as part of his Community service for his Bar Mitzvah.

More recognition arrived for Collegiate’s academic preparation when the school received recognition from the College Board for having one of the best student success rates in Advanced Placement (AP) math, science and technology courses. The distinction qualified Collegiate to apply for the Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement, awards which schools for outstanding performance and participation in AP courses. Louisville Collegiate School offers 18 advanced courses that culminate students sitting for Advanced Placement exams. A

resounding 41% of Collegiate’s Class of 2008 was recognized nationally for earning AP Scholar status. The Upper School math team placed 4th in the district and 4th overall in the region out of 32 teams beating Trinity, Sacred Heart, Assumption, Ballard, and many more. On an individual basis, Matthew Kubicki received 1st place out of all 9-12th graders in the region and Drew Mattingly placed 3rd out of all juniors in the district and the region. Also, Han Nguyen placed 2nd out of all freshmen in the district and the region.

Matthew Kubicki and Drew Mattingly also participated in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC-12) and scored in the top 5% of all international students that took the exam.

Mattingly also earned the incredible honor of being named the 2009 High School Math Student of the Year by the Greater

Louisville Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GLCTM). Department Chair, Tracie Catlett, presented the award to Drew at GLCTM’s annual spring awards banquet. This is

the third year in a row that the high school math award has gone to a Collegiate student. For the first time in school history, Collegiate captured the first place trophy for the Region 7 Governor’s Cup, edging out St. Xavier for the win. On the state level, Collegiate had an impressive showing with an overall finish of 12th place. Collegiate's Mock Trial team placed third in the state competition this year, competing against 28 other schools from across Kentucky

for the state title. Veteran participants Dana Prus-sian, Katie Beth White, Ann Wood and Barbara Gibbs led the team to their impressive finish. Prussian and Gibbs earned All-State Honors for their efforts.

Sydney Beache, was awarded a $15,000 college scholarship in the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and administered by the College Board. Sydney was among 60 high school students selected out of more than 560 entrants nationwide to present their projects to a top panel of epidemiologists in Washington, D.C. and one of 12 national finalists selected at the competition, in which nearly $500,000 in scholarships were awarded. Syndey's study, “Finding Connections, Reaching Under-served Women with Mammography,” was inspired by her summer internship at the Norton Cancer Institute in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Sydney is the first YES National Finalist from the state of Kentucky. A year after the massive earthquake that smashed school buildings in Sizhuan Province, China, Upper School Chinese language students showed their support by painting ceramic tiles that will become part of a wall in a newly constructed school at the disaster zone. With a theme of “man and nature,” students drew animals, plants and nature scenery. Some also drew images representing Louisville, such as the fleur-de-lis. Upper School Chinese teacher Christine Wu Wade delivered the tiles to China this summer.

Students in Tracie Catlett’s and Molly Prince’s Algebra 2 classes took their learning to downtown Louisville where they participated in the Main Street Math Walk. Groups of students visited Brown Forman’s Sales Headquarters, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Science Center and many other locations to design and answer several algebraic formulas presented to them in their assignment. The college counseling program celebrated the successes of the Class of 2009, with all 46 members admitted collectively to a diverse set of colleges and universities that span the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. This year, students filed 282 applications to 148 schools – a broad group of schools that speak to the unique talents and interests of the senior class.

the competition. Their works were displayed at the Kentucky Museum of Arts & Crafts and sent to New York City for judging at the national level. In talent recitals throughout the year, Lower School students displayed their individual talents in piano, violin, voice or an instrument of their choice. Their choral performances delighted parents and fellow students at the holiday program and at the spring concert perfor-mance dubbed ‘The Art of Play’. Led by music teacher Kathryn Smith, students performed folk songs inspired by Pieter Brueghel’s painting ‘Children’s Games’. Jan Tedesco’s Vocal Ensemble and Chamber Choir performed a variety of sacred, secular and musical theater pieces during their annual

In the Lower School, using chalks in the black and white spectrum, fourth grade students experimented with the effects of light and shadow in their winter world. And as spring sprang to life, first graders painted flowers in the style of Claude Monet. Led

by Christina Clifford, 7th graders created modular sculptures with White Castle hamburger cartons in art. Students worked in pairs to practice problem solving,

and also learned that the creative process allows the art to evolve, so that what one intended, may become something totally different. Upper School Art teacher Susan Harrison took Photography and

2-D Studio students on a night out for the Collegiate Visual Art program during one of Louisville’s First Friday Gallery Hops. The

students saw a variety of 2-D and 3-D art and photography at Paul Paletti's, Zephyr, PYRO, 21C,

Kentucky Museum of Arts & Crafts and Glassworks galleries.

The past year also saw 17 students selected for the annual Scholastics

Regional Art Exhibition & Compe-tition, the highest number of

Collegiate students ever represented at the show. Katherine Brown (1), Ann Lawson Willig (2), Xuanxuan Li

(1), and Harvey Fulton (1) had their works designated as Gold Keys in

concert at the Church of the Advent. The groups also enter-

tained the Upper School student body at their Spring Pops Concert. Instrumental music students Lee

Oca, McKenna Poe, Alice Stites, Crystal Staebell, Jordan Wood, Gaby Bello and Victoria Medley entertained crowds with performances on the piano, guitar and violin during the Middle School talent show. Accolades were presented to Upper School members of Collegiate’s instrumental ensemble when Grace Yu, Mary Gail Richardson and Ann Richardson were three of the six winners at WUOL's 2008 Young Artists Competition with Ann taking home first place! On the auditorium’s stage and in the Black Box Theatre, students transformed themselves into compelling characters in a theatrical line-up that brought emotion and at times comic relief to Collegiate audiences. This year, as Sharon Kinnison’s Upper School drama class studied surrealism in theatre, Chelle Wabrek's 4th grade class was in the throes for rehearsals of ‘Macbeth’. The two classes combined where-upon the Upper School "directors" worked in two groups over the course of several days, using 4th grade actors, to create surrealistic scenes from ‘Macbeth’. Directors explained the nature of surrealism and asked the 4th grade actors to fully explore their characters and the theme of their scenes in an effort to make them more fantastic.

A cast and crew of 45 Middle School actors transported audiences to the world of flying carpets and a magical Genie, when they produced Aladdin, Jr. Joyful song and dance routines coupled with vibrant costumes delighted Lower School audiences and visiting preschools. A troupe of Middle School students also performed ‘A Midsummer

Night’s Dream’ in the spring. The Upper School theatre class enjoyed a special visit from Louisville native and star of the television series ‘Lost’, William Mapother. Mapother had returned to Louisville to perform in the Actors Theatre production of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’. Sharing details about the rise of his career and his own acting tips, Mapother's visit was both informative and exciting. The year was also highlighted with the

hilarious productions of ‘The Real Inspector Hound’ and ‘Murder du Jour’ and the moving, emotional drama of ‘The Laramie Project’, both perfomed by Upper School casts. ‘The Laramie Project’ featured students playing individual town residents of Laramie, Wyoming, reacting to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay student attending the University of Wyoming.

The achievements of Collegiate’s athletes in 2008-09 shattered records and took the school’s program to new heights. In the fall and for the first time in Collegiate’s history, both the Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Cross Country Teams qualified to compete in the State Cross-Country Meet. Collegiate’s Amazon and Titan runners placed second in the regional competition and placed 13th overall of teams in the Class A Team State Meet, beating out all of the other Louisville area schools. At the State Cross-Country Meet individual, runners, John Burke took 10th place overall in the state of Kentucky among Class A schools and Mallory Tyler took 16th in the state of Kentucky among all Class A schools. Also in the fall season, the Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey team battled their way into the finals of the state tournament. The team was cheered on by the throngs of Collegiate fans, with over 90% of the Upper School in attendance.

Coach Wendy Martin was named “Coach of the Year,” by her fellow coaching peers. Margaret McConnell, Taylor Hodge and Lexsa Campbell were named to the All State 1st Tournament team and Hannah Bruenderman, Montrice Scott and Cece Lindsey, named to the 2nd tournament team.

Collegiate’s Soccer Program also achieved another “first” when both Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity teams advanced to the Class A State Championships in Frankfort. During the winter months, the Boys’ Varsity Basketball team was runner-up in the Regional All-A tournament, marking the second year in a row that the boys’ team competed in the Championship game, which they won in 2007-08. In the pool, the Collegiate swim team shattered individual and team records on the road to Region II Championship competition. Jeananne Baldwin, Dani Lacy, Mallory Tyler, and Han Nguyen broke the girls 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:55.96. Blake Huey, Dane Roberts, Gabe Sharlin, and Tom Vieth broke the boys 200 medley relay with a time of 159.80. Tom Vieth also broke the school’s 50 freestyle record with a time of 22.23. Tom also became Collegiate’s first regional swim-ming champion in the 100 freestyle

and qualified for the KHSAA Swimming Championships. Regional coaches voted Tom as the Male Sportsman of the Year, an honor reflecting the strong character and sportsmanship of Collegiate’s student athletes.

Spring saw historic strides for the Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse team that advanced to this year’s state finals and ended their season with many honors. Their season was filled with amazing wins against Trinity and KCD. The boys’ defeat of Trinity High School marked the first time in school history a boy’s athletic team has ever defeated the Rocks. The season ended with Carson Pfeifer named one of two U.S. Lacrosse All-Americans for the State of Kentucky and Noah Horowitz selected as the only U.S. Lacrosse Academic All-American for the state of Kentucky. Also, Varsity Coach Chad Wabrek was named U.S. Lacrosse Coach of the Year for the state of Kentucky. Players earning Kentucky Lacrosse Association All-State Team recognition were Max Burge, Jay Reed, Carson Pfeifer, Harris Levine and Patrick Rhea. While on the Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse team, Taylor Hodge, Mallory Tyler and Hannah Bruenderman were named to the All-State Team. Following their cross-country team success from the fall, Sarah Bode, Drew Mattingly and John Burke qualified for the state track and field championships in May. All runners represented Collegiate well with Sarah finishing in the top eight in the state in the 3200 meter run.

Collegiate’s crew team continued their domination on the water, winning the Louisville Regatta for the 2nd year in a row. During “An Evening with Tori Murden McClure ‘81” copies

of McClure’s new book ‘A Pearl in the Storm’ were sold by Carmichael’s Bookstore. Book sales generated $636.76 for Collegiate’s crew program. Adding to the year’s plethora of trophies were younger athletes from Collegiate’s Lower and Middle School. The 5th and 6th grade AMAS Lacrosse team won the KLA division and the inaugural Cherokee Shootout competition. The team ended their stellar season as both the regular season and tournament winners with a final record of 8-1. Also, the Gold Middle School tennis team

came in 1st place in their league at Louisville Indoor Racquet Club.

The 2008-09 school year began in proper fashion with the Convocation ceremony that welcomed new and old students and faculty to Collegiate’s 93rd year. At the conclusion of Convocation, seniors and 1st graders were paired and walked out of the ceremony hand-in- hand, signifying the beginning of a new Collegiate tradition. Afterwards, the Upper School’s annual First Day of School (FDOS) celebration took place, as the Blue and Gold teams battled in tug of war and dodgeball events. As the nation tuned into debates and daily coverage on the

national election, Joe Geoghegan served as a student correspondent at the Democratic National Convention held in Denver, Colorado. Joe traveled to Denver as part of the Junior Statesman Foundation of America's 2008 Election Symposium. He also attended Democratic Convention events with the Kentucky delegation and blogged daily about his experience. In the Upper School, students participated in a mock debate with Sam Beach, Walker Robinson, James Seiler and Ann Wood representing the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates of the Republican and Democratic

tickets. Following the debate, students cast their ballots for national and state candidates in a mock election sponsored by the Secretary of State’s Office. In the Lower School, the 4th and 5th grades learned about the electoral process in their homerooms and graphed voter turnout data on Election Day. After the election, 2nd grade student Ty Tubbs was fortunate to attend the Inauguration with his family in Washington, D.C. Collegiate students showed off their school spirit during Homecoming festivities, organized annually by the Upper School's student-led Senate. That week, students and faculty dressed up as celebrities, superheroes and athletes during dress-themed days. On Thursday, athletes and their families enjoyed a pasta dinner and motivational ad-

dress by University of Louisville's Head Field Hockey Coach Pam Bustin, who was also the Assistant Coach of the United States' field hockey team during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games. The boisterous enthusiasm of Friday’s pep rally and V-I-C-T-O-R-Y cheer prepared the Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Soccer and Varsity Field Hockey teams for their games later on that evening. Academic contests brought students from all over the city

and state to Collegiate in 2008-09. The Regional Scripps Spelling Bee brought the Kentucky’s top spellers to Collegiate’s stage where participants competed for a chance to compete in the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Representing Collegiate was Kyle Kersey who was the school’s top speller. In March, over 300 students descended upon Collegiate’s campus to compete in 46 events at the Regional Science Olympiad

competition. Students built bridges, launched eggs into the air in homemade rockets, and demonstrated their knowledge of astronomy, health, and ecology. Coached by science teacher Derek Miller, Collegiate’s Upper School team came in 2nd place, splitting the dominance in recent years of multiple teams from Manual High School. The Middle School team also came in 2nd place in their division. At the state competition, both teams achieved further success when the Upper School team earned 3rd place (their highest finish in school history) and the Middle School group finishing 5th.

In April, Collegiate invited the Louisville community to “An Evening with Tori Murden McClure ’81.” McClure, an alumna of Collegiate, recently authored ‘A Pearl in the Storm’, a memoir detailing her physical and emotional journey as the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Before a packed crowd in the Bomhard Theatre at the Kentucky Center, McClure was interviewed by Bob Edwards, host of The Bob Edwards Show on SIRIUS XM radio and Bob Edwards Weekend on public radio stations.

C a m p sThe summer of 2009 saw another successful year for Camps at Collegiate with an increase in attendance of more than 30%. Over 250 children from other schools spent the summer enjoying the educational and enrichment opportunities offered. Collaborative camps with the Frazier International History Museum peaked the interest of both students and parents. Renowned coaches attracted students to athletic camps such as Razor Lacrosse and Soccer. Each camp was designed with the intent of fostering each child’s mental, physical and creative growth.

Emphasizing the school’s mission to develop “confident leadership” and “local responsiveness” Collegiate formed a partnership with Cedar Lake Lodge in 2008-2009. The project raised campus awareness about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In the Lower School, a Cedar Lake resident and registered nurse spoke at an assembly discussing the fears associated with disabilities. Over a four week period, a group of 8th graders volunteered at Cedar Lake Lodge. In October,

the entire Upper School participated in a “Day of Caring” at Cedar Lake where students assisted residents and cleaned residential apartments in the Louisville community. In December, students organized a school-wide “Clothing Drive” and collected over 8000 items of clothing for the organization. Capping off the year was the Cedar Lake/Collegiate Partnership Challenge 5K race, organized entirely by a committee of Upper School students.

A l u m n iCollegiate alumni gathered to celebrate and honor their alma mater throughout 2008-2009. In August, alumni battled in the Alumni Games, going head-to-head in field hockey, tennis, and soccer competitions. The Alumni Association hosted a happy hour event in the Washington, D.C. area where more than a dozen Collegiate alumni gathered at Johnny’s Half Shell to enjoy drinks

and hors d’oeuvres. The Young Alumni Holiday Party allowed alumni from the last 10 years to enjoy pizza and bowling at KingPin Lanes. The holiday season also featured alumni returning to campus for the Holiday Program to sing “Dona Nobis Pacem” and enjoy coffee and conversation beforehand. An Alumni Happy Hour at Lilly’s allowed local alumni to welcome springtime and reminisce about their days on Glenmary Avenue. In April, alumni attended “An Evening with Tori Murden McClure ’81” at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. Author of ‘A Pearl in the Storm’, a memoir detailing her physical and emotional journey as the first woman to row

solo across the Atlantic Ocean, McClure was interviewed by Bob Edwards. The ’81 graduate also visited Collegiate’s 4th grade classroom to answer questions about her journey and spoke before the Middle and Upper School divisions. From May 29 to June 1, alumni gathered for a great weekend of friends and celebrations for Reunion Weekend. The weekend kicked off with the commencement ceremony of the Class of 2009, and the recognition of the Class of 1959 who were in the audience and celebrating their 50th reunion year. Further displaying the tradition

and longevity of Collegiate’s mission was the recognition of six legacies in the Class of 2009 – meaning a grandparent and/or parent of the graduate have attended Collegiate. On Saturday morning, members of reunion classes looked over old photos and yearbooks at a brunch held on campus and enjoyed a tour of different divisions and buildings on campus. The weekend ended with the 10th Annual Golf Scramble, organized by the Collegiate Booster Club, where Collegiate alumni enjoyed a full day of golf and beautiful weather at Champions Pointe Golf Club. During the summer, the Young Alumni Summer Job Program placed a record number of graduates in jobs or internships. Allie Capes ’08 (Nanny for a Collegiate Family), Brittany Fitzpatrick ’05 (Parker and Klein Real Estate), Kelsey Goldman ’08 (Kentucky Select Properties, William Hor-naday ’08 (Kelvin Cooperage) and Kendra Ralston ’07 (Bahe Cook Cantley and Jones, PLC) spent their summer breaks gaining real-life experience in the workplace.

The school awarded over $1.5 million in Financial Assistance, which amounted to 25% of our student population receiving varied amounts of tuition assistance. Our students continue to live in all areas of the Louisville Metropolitan area. We have students from 50 individual zip codes that span from Laconia, Indiana, to Taylorsville, Kentucky. The Louisville Collegiate School Merit Scholars program is a highly selective, merit-based scholarship opportunity that recognizes outstanding students based upon superior academic achievement, standardized test score results and the potential for making a significant contribution while attending Collegiate and later in life. The scholarship carries a stipend equal to one- half of the annual tuition. Cason Reily, Jake Zimmerman, Felipe De La Barra, Elizabeth Walton, Gray Alston and Ben Handy

earned renewable scholarships toward their high school career at Louisville Collegiate School. Earning renewable scholarships towards their Middle School career at Louisville Collegiate School are Urooj Nasim (Collegiate), Harcourt Allen (Brandeis), Jacob Fink (Brandeis), John Steenrod (Chance), and Coley Sullivan (Chance). Ruby Redstone was named the recipient of the Patricia Trost Friedler for Young Women, a new scholarship oppor-tunity created by Sallie Bingham, a Collegiate alumna from the Class of 1954, who named the program in memory of her classmate Patricia Trost Friedler. The scholarship is awarded to a young woman entering the 9th grade, who exhibits creative promise, academic achievement and personal

qualities of leadership and service. A restricted anonymous gift allowed Collegiate’s

Admission Office to move into the Anna E. Wilton Admission House – thus establishing a unique admission experience, creating additional

instructional space in the original Glenmary building and presenting a stronger first impression to campus visitors.

A n n u a l F u n dThe 2008-09 Annual Fund Campaign focused on the Collegiate community achieving “100% Participation” among all donor constituencies. Under the leadership of parent volunteer Kellie Vogt, the Development Office raised $411,340. Throughout the year, the Collegiate community witnessed the gradual uptick of the participation percentages as more and more donors voiced their support for the mission of Collegiate. 73% of Collegiate families made a contribution to the Annual Fund, shattering the previous record of 65% participation. The generosity of parents, alumni and friends of the school along with the many volunteers that helped make calls during the campaign made the 2008-09 a success.

D a d ’ s C l u bAt 7:45 a.m. on the last Friday of each month, Dads’ Club gathered in the Upper School’s Davis Commons. During the 2008-09 school year, Club Chair John Reed gathered dads, stepdads and granddads for conversation, coffee and short presentations that showcased senior speeches and faculty. The purpose of the club is to help dads connect and stay informed about the school; network with other dads; interact with faculty, coaches, students, board members and administrators; and, of course, have some fun. Every Collegiate dad is a member of Dads’ Club and is encouraged to attend.
