March 11, 2014 Mr. Ray Lauga, Jr. Councilman, District A St. Bernard Parish 8201 West Judge Perez Drive Chalmette, LA 70043 Dear Mr. Lauga, The Old Arabi Neighborhood Association strongly supports the idea of the Old Arabi Cultural Arts District. This has generated tremendous excitement in the community. It has been presented at the neighborhood association general meetings and has been enthusiastically received by the membership. In conversations with residents the discussion invariably comes around to the future of Old Arabi. Those discussions lead to establishing a vision for St. Claude Ave. specifically and Old Arabi generally redefining itself as a haven for artists. It fits exactly with our proposed community master plan. In that plan we are attempting to create a community similar to the Magazine St. area of New Orleans. The main corridor would have small commercial establishments that would be perfect for artist galleries and studios. Away from the main corridor we would have residential areas mixed with commercial which again would be perfect for artist studios and galleries. As previously mentioned, we have already had two artists move to the community. Both of them have established studios and one is preparing to open a gallery with additional studio space for more artists. The momentum for an idea such as this seems to be strong and the timing is perfect. Artists are moving here. The local neighborhood organization completely supports the idea. The community itself is excited about the prospect. Our elected representative is writing the proposal. The community master plan is being finished up and this idea nests perfectly inside of it. Everyone I've spoken to supports the idea. We stand ready to do whatever we, as an organization, can do to help make this happen. Sincerely, Michael A. Pechon, President Old Arabi Neighborhood Association
