LAPB 2016 Fall Symposium Awards
LAPB/LA Chapter TWS met September 15-16 at the Ione E. Burden Visitor Information and
Conference Center in Baton Rouge, 71 people attended and 24 remained for the evening
social. Publication awards were given in the Basic Research, Fisheries, Wildlife, General
Conservation and Popular categories.
The Basic Research Category publication award went to: Chabert, T., A. Colin, T. Aubin, V.
Shacks, S.L. Bourquin, R.M. Elsey, J.G. Acosta, and N Matehevon. 2015. Size does matter:
crocodile mothers react more the voices of smaller offspring. Scientific Reports. 5:15547.
For the Fisheries Category the first place winners were: Miller, B.A., W.E. Kelso, and M.D.
Kaller. 2015. Diet portioning in a diverse centrarchid assemblage in the Atchafalaya River
Basin, Louisiana. Transaction of the American Fisheries Society 144:780-791.
Top honors in the Wildlife Category went to: Rosenblatt, A. E., J. C. Nifong, M. R. Heithaus,
F. J. Mazzotti, M. S. Cherkiss, B. M. Jeffery, R. M. Elsey, R. A. Decker, B. R. Silliman, L. J. Guil-
lette Jr., R. H. Lowers, J. C. Larson. 2015. Factors affecting individual foraging specialization
and temporal diet stability across the range of a large-bodied “generalist” apex predator.

Winners for the General Conservation Category were: Gee, K.H., S.L. King, and R.F.
Keim. 2015. Influence of hydrologic modifications on Fraxinus pennsylvanica in the Missis-

Top Honors in the Popular Category went to: Hogue, Jennifer. The History of Fur Trapping

Student awards—14 students gave oral presentations and 3 students presented posters. All the presenters, both oral and poster, did an outstanding job and should be commended for a job well done.
Oral Presentations:
Kristy D. Capelle with the School of Renewable Natural
Resources at LSU took top honors with her presenta-
tion “Evaluating Survival of Released Ranched American
Alligator in Coastal Louisiana”. Her co-authors were
Michael D. Kaller with LSU and Ruth M. Elsey with the
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Madelyn B. McFarland with the School of Renewable
Natural Resources at LSU won second place with her
presentation “Prothonotary Warbler Nestling Diet and
Parental Provisioning Rates at BREC’s Bluebonnet
Swamp Nature Center, in Baton Rouge, LA”. Her co-authors
were Ryan C. Hudgins, LSU, Katie L. Percy, and Erik I. Johnson with Audubon Louisiana, Na-
tional Audubon Society, Baton Rouge, LA.
Poster Presentation:
Melissa Bloch , ULM, won the poster presentation contest with her poster on “The Use of
Unmanned Aerial Systems In Forest Management”. J. Bhattacharjee, University of Louisi-
ana, Monroe, was her co-author.

Get your cameras ready! Now is the time to start clicking away. There will
be a photography contest at the 2017 LAPB annual meeting. The contest will
be open to all registered conference attendees and winners will be an-
nounced during the evening social, so make plans to attend the social for
2017. Any wildlife/biology/landscape/research, etc. type theme will be al-
lowed. More details will follow.

LDWF Hosting the Southeastern Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA) Conference
The annual conference of the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies is a forum for the exchange of
ideas and critical information regarding the management and protection of fish and wildlife resources primarily in the
southeast. The conference attracts over 500 representatives from state and federal agencies, citizen’s organizations,
universities, and private wildlife research groups, fisheries and wildlife scientists, agency enforcement personnel, and
other natural resource related organizations.
This year marks the 70th annual SEAFWA conference. It will be held October 16-19 in downtown Baton Rouge. Go to
http://seafwa.org/conferences/2016/index.html for registration and other information. A few highlights form the con-
ference will include a Plenary Session on Monday October 17th beginning at 8:00 am. The Plenary Session will cover
“Conserving Vital Habitats” and will have speakers from the U.S. Forest Service, Sweet Lake Land & Oil Company, LSU,
Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration, Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
There will be a Welcome Reception on Sunday at 6:00 pm sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and
Swarovski Optik and an Awards Banquet Tuesday evening . Also not to be missed are the special Student Events
scheduled for Saturday , Sunday , and Monday. Go to the SEAFWA website for more information on this.
Professional presentations and posters will run the gamut of wildlife, fisheries, education, and enforcement. Abstracts
are available on the SEAFWA website to help you organize your schedule for the conference. Register by October 14th
to receive a discounted registration rate. There is a reduced registration rate for students as well.
