the critical listThis week’s entertainment highlights

IT’S not difficult to get a massive girlcrush on Louise Brealey.

Best known for playing love-struckMolly in iconic BBC drama Sherlock– the observant pathologist who seesbeneath the brashness of BenedictCumberbatch’s high functioning, sociopathic detective –and got to kisshim in season three (jealous? Us?),she’s also a journalist, producer andtheatre actress.

Plus, she’s way cooler than Molly:more forthright, funny, nicely sweary, thoughtful, and just as bright, she isalso excellent on Twitter where her176k followers get treated to photosof dogs pretending to be dinosaursand her witterings on birds – she lovesbirds.

Preferring the moniker Loo, the36-year-old admits “something magic

happened”, with Sherlock.“We watched the first episode and

we were all absolutely gobsmackedbecause we knew that the script wasgreat,” she says. “Paul McGuigan is amagician, Stephen [Moffat] and Mark[Gatiss] know what they’re on aboutand the writing was just brilliant, but itwas so exciting realising: ‘This is reallygood’. There’s a world away frombeing in something brilliant and beingin something that’s an internationalmega hit.”

She adds, genuinely dumbfounded:“I’ll never be in anything like Sherlockagain, and Una Stubbs has been inevery smash hit for the last 50 years, even she’s like: ‘Well, Sherlock takesthe biscuit’.”

“Obviously the largest debt goesto Conan Doyle for creating these

stories that resonate with people in2015, but there was something aboutthe sheer joy of this adaptation, thecelebration of it, the wit of it andthe bravery of going so far from [theoriginal], it just worked and obviouslyBen and Martin are just the mostextraordinary double act.”

Ahh Cumberbatch and Freeman;are they really as wonderful as theyseem?

“They are both perfect all thetime – haha! I couldn’t possibly say,”she laughs. “I’m just really, reallythrilled to be part of the team. I stillhave to pinch myself, it’s a great job,and they’re my friends. Benedict ismy friend – on a personal level it’senriched my life.”

Sadly we are not chatting topromote the new season of Sherlock

“There’s a worldaway from being insomething brilliantand being insomething that’s aninternational megahit”
