“Biofilm Modelling and degenerate parabolic equations” Zusammenfassung/Abstract

Biofilms are organised communities of bacterial populations which offer protection against external factors. Biofilms imply an increased resistance to antibiotics, which makes the treatment of infections difficult. Because of their ubiquity and of these harmful effects, understanding the mechanisms underlying growth and increased resistance of biofilms remains a challenging open question. In this talk, we discuss a deterministic mathematical model based on systems of partial differential equations. The inclusion of some specific effects, like existence of a sharp interface between biofilm and liquid, and typical trophic behavior, leads to a prototypical system of reaction-diffusion equations, with a non-linear degenerated diffusivity. In this talk, after an introduction of the biological background required for modelling biofilms, some mathematical questions (e.g. existence of solutions) as well as computational issues will be adressed. Possible extensions towards more realistic models will also be discussed.
