RAILWAY STAMPS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES/STATES[We are pleased to present the award-winning exhibition collections of Railway Stamps formed by Tony Presgrave of Adelaide (South Australia) and by Ray Kelly of Queensland (New South Wales, Queensland & Victoria). Not since Premier Philately sold Ed Druce's collection on 26/1/2002 has there been such an extensive array of this scarce and highly collectable material offered at public auction: all "Druce" references relate to the 2002 sale. Given that railway stamps were affixed to often cumbersome parcels, and usually treated with scant regard, used examples are often damaged. Used stamps graded "B" are generally well above-average, while those graded "A" are exceptional and might be considered rarities. Entires or large pieces are rarely encountered &, with a few exceptions, are rare. Catalogue references are to "The Railway Stamps of Mainland Australia" by Ingles Presgrave & Craig - "IPC" - (1980) which, despite being in need of a total overhaul, remains - along with the Druce Collection catalogue - the best reference on the subject. "Railway Stamps of Australia" is a modern catalogue that is, in our opinion, of uneven quality: it is referred to, sparingly, as "RSA"]

Ex Lot 358

O "Mystery lot" of Ray Kelly's dribs and drabs, mostly from Victoria with a few early types, & just a few Queensland. (39)

Lot 384

F c.1884 'STAMPED PARCEL.' Series 1/- as #QR7 but on Yellow Paper, very fine strike of double boxed 'CANCELLED/PARCEL 29NOV86 STAMP/BRISBANE' d/s in violet, signature h/s in purple & traces at upper-right of blue-pencil. Superb modern facsimile of a howling rarity! [Both IPC and Elsmore record the Second Series - of this design - as being on White Paper and issued in 1888. Parcel services were extended to all Queenland railways on 1/1/1884, from which date the rate was also significantly reduced to 3d per pound, regardless of distance carried. It is hard to imagine that there was even a 2 years delay in providing labels for the service: these labels may well have been issued in 1884]
