LAS REGLAS

1. Double negatives in a sentence are OK.2. You must have at least 1 negative in front of the verb.3. Some negative words can move around in sentences.4. Some negative words require agreement with the noun they negate. 5. Answering a question negativelyrequires a “NO” and a negative.

ALGO/NADA• Algo = Something Nada = nothing• ¿Quieres algo de comer? • No, no quiero nada gracias. • Translate: We have nothing to drink. No tenemos nada de beber. They buy something at PDQ. Compran algo en PDQ.

ALGUIEN/NADIE• Alguien = Someone Nadie = no one• When these are the direct object in a sentence,

they will also need a personal “A”.

EX: Nadie fuma cigarillos. Nobody smokes.EX: No veo a nadie. I don’t see anyone.

EX: Alguien me quiere. Someone loves me. EX: Veo a alguien en clase. I see someone in class.

Ningún – none, single masculine nouns

Algunos – some, plural masc. nounsAlguna – some, single feminine nouns

Ninguno/alguno

• Only used when there is NO NOUN after it. • EX: ¿Roberta tiene muchos novios?• Ex: No, ella no tiene ninguno. (no novio)

• ¿Quieres comprar algunos gatos?• Sí, me gustaría alguno. (no gato in sentence)

o…o/ni…ni• O…o neither no ni…ni neither nor

• ¿Prefieres los tacos o los burritos?• (do you prefer tacos or burritos?)• No quiero ni los tacos ni los burritos?• (I don’t want neither tacos nor burritos.) • * ni...ni can also be interpreted with tampoco. • No quiero ni tacos tampoco burritos.

Siempre/Nunca

• Siempre = always Nunca = never• Nunca can bounce around in sentences. • EX: No bailo nunca. -OR- Nunca bailo. • Change these positivos to negativos.• Siempre presto atención.• Siempre llego a tiempo.• Siempre hago mi tarea.

También/TampocoTambién also Tampoco neitherUse también to agree positively.Use tampoco to agree negatively. Me gusta estudiar español. Yo también.No me gusta despertar temprano. Yo tampoco.

No bailo, tampoco canto.I don’t dance, nor sing.
