VALLEY ORGAN & TISSUE DONORS TO BE HONORED AT “WALL OF HEROES”IN HARLINGEN & BROWNSVILLE

HARLINGEN / BROWNSVILLE – Valley residents and others who give the gift of life by donating organs and tissue will be honored through a “Wall of Heroes” framed picture display to be dedicated this Tuesday, April 1 at 10 a.m. at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen and at 1 p.m. at Valley Baptist-Brownsville.

Those who donate organs are being honored as heroes because donated organs such as liver, heart and lungs improve the lives of others. Bone and tissue transplants can restore movement to injured limbs or prevent an amputation. Donated corneas bring sight to the blind.

Also, very significantly in the Valley, donated kidneys can free a patient from dialysis. For example, in 1997, Dr. Ruben Lopez, Cardiovascular Surgeon and Trauma Medical Director at Valley Baptist, helped save his own brother’s life (Regino Lopez) by donating one of his kidneys.

“We are all our ‘brother’s keepers’ and we need to look out for one another,” Dr. Lopez said. “You don’t have to be a doctor to save a life – anyone can help save a life by simply signing an organ donor card.”

Tina Briones, RN, Ed.D.,Vice President with Valley Baptist, said Valley Baptist, along with the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance and the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio Allograft Resources, wish to acknowledge this “gift of life” provided by organ and tissue donors and their families.

“We recognize it is a difficult time of grief and sorrow when this deci-sion is made to offer others a second chance of life,” Dr. Briones said. “Whether organ donors signed up as donors themselves, or their families made the critical decision for them, each will be remembered by the com-munity. Valley Baptist in Harlingen and Brownsville is reserving a special place to remember these heroes. Our wish is that the ‘Wall of Heroes’ at Valley Baptist serves as a memorial to our patients -- and comforts those who made the difficult decision for them. Our hope is that it encourages others to give the gift of life.”

Valley family members of deceased organ donors at Valley Baptist are invited to send in a 5x7 photo of their loved one to display on the “Wall of Heroes.” Photos may be mailed to Tina Briones EdD, RN, at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen, 2101 Pease Street, Harlingen, 78550. Family members of organ donors should also contact Dr. Briones about signing a consent form to display their loved one’s photo in the hospital; she can be reached at 956-389-1104 or by e-mail at [email protected].

PROMOTING ORGAN DONATION – From the left, Patrick Ybarra, RN, ADON of Nursing Administration at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen; Flor Delgado of the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance; Manny Vela, CEO of Valley Baptist Health System; Dr. Ruben Lopez, Cardiovascular Surgeon and Organ Donation Committee Medical Chairman for Valley Baptist; Tina Briones, RN, Ed.D., Valley Baptist Vice President; Sylvia and Gabriel Espinoza of Edinburg, parents of organ donor Jeramie Espinoza (who died after a tragic car collision in 2003, but whose organs saved the lives of five people); Henrietta Peynado,

Ask Our Dentists

Q: Can anyone receive dental implants? What could I expect during a dental implant procedure?

ANSWERED by DR.GRAYSON SELLERS:Well, almost anyone. A dental implant procedure involves a two-part process; the first part is done by an oral surgeon and the second part is done by a general dentist. But the first step is to see your general dentist to determine whether or not you are a candidate for an

implant. If yes, then the patient would begin the im-plant process by first having the oral surgeon place the anchor (implant). The implant is then allowed to fuse to the bone for a waiting period of several months. This process is called “osseointegration.” (In the case of a denture wearer, the patient’s old removable denture would be modified for use during the waiting period.) After the waiting period, the top of the implant (post) will be exposed, and the next process is begun by the general dentist. A single tooth, fixed bridge, or full den-ture is then made to fit onto the implant(s). The number and type of implants and the method of implantation will vary with each individual case. Amazingly, there is very little discomfort during the surgical phase, and dental implant surgery is often performed in the den-tal office. If you are considering implants, a thorough evaluation by your dentist will help determine if you would be a good candidate. If you do not have a dentist, you may call our office to schedule a complimentary 15 minute dental implant consultation. You may also ob-tain more information on dental implants by visiting the Academy of General Dentistry online at www.agd.org.
