2. HEADING SOUTH WITH SPEED: The first-place Dodgers tonight
begin a five-game road trip with the first of three contests against the
San Diego Padres. The Dodgers are just 10-15 on the road this season
after going 49-32 in 2014. Following the weekend series, the Dodgers
head to Arlington for a two-game Interleague series with the Texas
Rangers of the American League West.
The Dodgers are 6-3 against the Padres this season and took
two of three games at PETCO Park April 24-26. Since Don
Mattingly took over as manager in 2011, Los Angeles is 25-
15 (.625) at PETCO Park.
Los Angeles has the NL’s second-best winning percentage at
.583, behind only the Cardinals (.650, 39-21).
ROUNDING INTO FORM: Dodger starter Clayton Kershaw has
won three consecutive starts, posting a 0.82 ERA (2 ER/22.0 IP) in
that time. One year ago tomorrow, Kershaw began one of the longest
scoreless innings streaks in Dodger history (41.0 IP) and has been
absolutely dominant in the month of June:
Most Consecutive Starts Won in June, NL since 1946
(No-decisions break streak)
Harvey Haddix, StL 9 (1953-54)
Sandy Koufax, LA 9 (1965-66)
Bob Gibson, StL 9 (1968-69)
Jim Lonborg, Phi 9 (1973-74)
Clayton Kershaw, LA 9 (2013-Active)
*The last NL pitcher to win more than nine consecutive starts in June
was St. Louis’ Mort Cooper between 1941-43 (12 straight wins).
SOURCE: STATS, LLC
Since May 1, Dodger starters lead the National League with
a 3.12 combined ERA (83 ER/239.1 IP) and, overall, the
rotation ranks fifth in the Majors with a 3.42 ERA (138
ER/362.2 IP).
TRANSACTION ACTION: The Dodgers today acquired infielder
Ronald Torreyes from Toronto in exchange for cash considerations
and designated infielder Darwin Barney for assignment. Torreyes, 22,
will begin his Dodger career with Double-A Tulsa and has a .299
career batting average with 18 home runs and 231 RBI in 537 minor
league games in six professional seasons with the Reds (2010-11),
Cubs (2012-13), Astros (2013-15) and Blue Jays (2015) organizations.
This year, the native of Venezuela has combined to hit .175 with 14
RBI in 35 games with Houston’s Triple-A Fresno and Toronto’s
Double-A New Hampshire.
Today, the Dodgers promoted infielder Hector Olivera from
Double-A Tulsa to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Olivera, who
was signed by the Dodgers on May 19, batted .318 (7-for-22)
with a homer and six RBI in six games with the Drillers.
STEADY AS HE GOES: Andre Ethier is not on this year’s All-Star
ballot, but is certainly worthy of write-in support, ranking among NL
outfielders in batting average (.293, 11th), home runs (8, T-10
th), RBI
(26, T-11th), on-base percentage (.374, 8
th) and slugging percentage
(.522, 4th). After his home run on Monday, Ethier (153) is just one
homer away from tying Willie Davis (154) for ninth place on the all-
time Los Angeles home run list. He also ranks among the Los Angeles
leaders in games (1,331, 8th), hits (1,285, 7
th), doubles (287, 5
th) and
RBI (644, 5th).
Ethier leads active players in hits (147), home runs (22) and
RBI (85) in 155 career games against the Padres.
SHINE LIKE STARS: Yesterday, the California League announced
its midseason all-stars and four Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes
have been honored; Kyle Farmer (.346, 33 runs, six triples in 43
games), infielder Brandon Trinkwon (.290, 4 HR, 26 RBI in 54
games), first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger (.283, 12 HR, 46
RBI and 18 2B in 58 games) and right-hander Jose De Leon (4-1, 1.67
ERA (7 ER/37.2 IP) and 58 strikeouts in seven starts). Farmer and De
Leon have since been promoted to Double-A Tulsa.
START VOTING DODGERS NOW!: Major League Baseball
