County A PPAREL retailer Forever 21 Inc. tops the list of the largest women-owned busi- nesses in Los Angeles County. The company is jointly owned by its co- founders, South Korean immigrant Jin Sook Chang and her husband, Do Won Chang. The L.A. company reported a 27 percent increase last year in an- nual revenue, which totaled $3.39 billion. It attributed the rise to store openings and a growing e-com- merce business. Forever 21 started in 1984 in just 900 square feet of space on Figueroa Street. Since then, it has grown rapidly; annual revenue has tripled since it first surpassed $1 billion in 2006. The company has expanded from an operator of boutique stores to occupy much larger spaces. Some new stores exceed 40,000 square feet, occupying big boxes left vacant by retailers such as Sears. The larger stores are similar to traditional department stores, with separate areas for different clothing items and six separate brands. In addition to its Forever 21 brand, the company has dedicated lines for men, plus-size women and vintage clothing. In total, Forever 21 operates more than 480 stores worldwide and has some 30,000 employees. – David Nusbaum THE PACESETTER Rank Company ¥ name ¥ address ¥ website Revenue 1 ¥ 2011 ¥ 2010 Employees ¥ L.A. THE LIST Women-oWned BuSIneSSeS nexT WeekThe 25 Largest New Auto Dealers in L.A. County

A ppAreL retailer Forever 21 Inc. tops the list of the largest women-owned busi-

nesses in Los Angeles County. The company is jointly owned by its co-founders, South Korean immigrant Jin Sook Chang and her husband, Do Won Chang.

The L.A. company reported a 27 percent increase last year in an-nual revenue, which totaled $3.39 billion. It attributed the rise to store openings and a growing e-com-merce business.

Forever 21 started in 1984 in just 900 square feet of space on Figueroa Street. Since then, it has grown rapidly; annual revenue has

tripled since it first surpassed $1 billion in 2006.

The company has expanded from an operator of boutique stores to occupy much larger spaces. Some new stores exceed 40,000 square feet, occupying big boxes left vacant by retailers such as Sears. The larger stores are similar to traditional department stores,

with separate areas for different clothing items and six separate brands. In addition to its Forever 21 brand, the company has dedicated lines for men, plus-size women and vintage clothing.

In total, Forever 21 operates more than 480 stores worldwide and has some 30,000 employees.
