Wow! I cannot believe all the rain we have been having! Our beautiful garden area is brimming with flowers; please feel free to come and enjoy them. We have been very busy in the Day Out Program. Music with Ruth, visits to the Farmers’ Market, walks around town, Fuller Lodge, the library and mu-seum, plus whatever we think of doing. We have a good time! If you know anyone that could benefit from our program please, have them give me a call or come in for a visit. If you would like to get on our mailing list for our newsletter, please let me know. Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., BESC. For reservations call 662-8922. It is essential for seniors wishing to dine at the BESC to make reservations. These can be made as late as 10:00 a.m. on the day that you wish to eat. You can also make them a month or

a week in advance. Please cancel your reservations when you are unable to come. If you arrive without a reservation, it is likely that we will be able to feed you, but we ask that you wait until we have served most of our patrons who made reservations. Please be courteous and adhere to this request. Note: Only bread/pastries can be taken home. Fruit can be substituted for any dessert. Suggested donation for lunch is $4.00. Please do not request change for bills greater than $20.00.

course may qualify you for a discount on automo-

bile insurance. The 4-hour course is $15.00 for

AARP members and $20.00 for all others.

Computers Computer Users Group (CUG) All users or potential users are welcome. Meetings are at 10:00 a.m. first, third, and fifth Tuesdays at BESC; 10:30 a.m. second and fourth Tuesdays at WRSC. Various subjects are discussed at each meeting depending on the immediate interests of those present. On the first Tuesday a particular ef-fort is made to deal with questions and problems from beginners. Beginners are always welcome. Mac Users Group (MUG) MUG meets on the third Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. in the BESC classroom. Here is a place to discuss your Mac usage or problems. All are welcome. Projector: A multimedia projector and associated laptop computer are available through the BESC office for senior classes and activities. Initial in-struction for set-up and use is required, and prior reservation is recommended. Available Computers: When there is no scheduled use, the computers in the BESC Computer Lab are available for internet access, practice, and general purposes (see calendar next to Lab door). Several computers in WRSC are also available for internet access and general use.

2015 NM Conference on Aging “Today – Tomorrow – Beyond” is the theme for

this year’s State Conference on Aging. We will

take our bus on Tuesday, August 18, so that

seniors can attend workshops, the Health &

Wellness Fair, visit with aging resource vendors

and hear the keynote speaker, Lynn Feinberg

“The Time Has Come – Family Caregiving”.

Elderly Program (LREP) is providing POA and

AHCD legal clinics at which you can meet

one-on-one with an LREP attorney to discuss

the need for and purpose of POAs and

the NM Conference on Aging. It is not too

The Lockhart Report

The White Rock Master Plan Implementation Committee met July 13 and heard the progress report on the rehabilitation of the Municipal Com-plex. The Senior Center will begin moving to temporary quarters at The Hive (between the Del Norte Credit Union and Metzger's) on July 20. The Senior Center will be closed during the move and will reopen on July 27. Please contact Annie at the WRSC/Hive if you have any questions on the room location of your activity. 662-8200

This month’s volunteer spotlight is shining on Jacquelynn Pana, a youth volunteer, who has devoted many hours playing chess with seniors in the Day Out program. Jacquelynn enjoys interacting with seniors and making them feel special. She graduated from Los Ala-mos High School this year and will be attending Fort Lewis College in Durango in the fall studying sports medicine and psychology. Jacquelynn, we wish you all the best at Fort Lewis College and truly appreciate the volunteer time that you have devoted to the Day Out program! Thank you so much and we hope to see you again next summer! Volunteer Call for Indoor Exhibits for County Fair

LAVA is coordinating volunteers to help out at the Mesa Public Li-brary overseeing the indoor exhibits for the Los Alamos County Fair. We are in need of six volun-teers per time slot to work 1.5 – 2 hour shifts on Friday, August 7, from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, August 8, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Volunteers will ensure that visitors are not han-dling any of the exhibits. Exhibits include artwork, needlework, crochet, quilts, horticulture, and baked and canned goods. There is also a need for a few volunteers to count the visitors coming through the exhibits for both days. Blood Drive The next blood drive will be held Thursday and Friday, August 27,and 28, at the First Baptist Church on Diamond Drive. If you can help with registration or serve food at this event, please contact the LAVA office at 662-8923. A big thank you to the Hospital Auxiliary for donating funds for the snacks, and to Lorraine Thorn for preparing the egg salad for the sandwiches! Updating Volunteer Information LAVA is updating all volunteer information to be in compliance with state funding requirements. If you have not yet done so, please call, e-mail or stop by the LAVA office with any changes to your address, phone or contact information. please let us know even if there are no changes. Quarterly Volunteer Report Thank you, LAVA volunteers for the tremendous amount of time that you dedicate to the numerous non-profit organizations that serve our community, helping to make it a wonderful place to live! You gave so generously of your time and 18,493 hours were submitted by 309 volunteers for the April – June 2015 quarter. For the fiscal year July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015, nearly 76,000 hours were re-ported by LAVA volunteers! Thank you all so much for the time that you give to our community!

2015 Walk to End Alzheimer’s This year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held at East Park and Aspen Ridge Lodge on the morning of Saturday, September 12. Please join us to honor and remember friends and family members who have or who are dealing with the challenges that come with this disease. We will have a gift basket raffle, good food, and a ceremony just before the Walk. There will also be a 5K run that morn-ing. This is the place for seniors to kick off a really wild and wooly Rodeo Week-end.

The Healing Power of Music We are lucky to have our Pauline Schneider as a presenter of a program on Music Thera-py. The local chapter of AARP invites every-one to HEAR Pauline on Wednesday, August 12, at 1:00 p.m. in the lower-level classroom of BESC. An inspirational article on this sub-ject appears in the July/August issue of AARP Bulletin.

Low Vision and Hearing Support

Group Lesley Olsher returns as our speaker on Tuesday, August 25, at 10:00 a.m. in the classroom BESC. She has researched the side effects of many drugs on hearing and vi-sion loss. Lesley has a personal history of oto-toxic damage and is an informed spokeswom-an on this issue. Although she lives in White Rock, we are scheduling this meeting on the Hill due to the WRSC move into temporary space. Everyone is welcome to these talks; please join us. If you have a specific drug concern, call Janet 672-9626, and she will forward the information to Lesley who will try and bring a response to the meeting.

Legal Assistance The State Bar of New Mexico’s Legal Re-sources for the Elderly Program (LREP) is of-fering a free legal workshop “Common Legal Issues for Senior Citizens” on Tuesday, Au-gust 11, 10:00 a.m. at the BESC class room. All seniors, family members, and others who work with seniors are invited to attend. Topics include powers of attorney, advance health-care directives, estate planning, and Medicaid for long term care. After the workshop, LREP staff attorneys will meet privately with New Mexicans who are 55 or older. Please note that appointments must be scheduled in advance of the workshop. To make an appointment, call 1-800-876-6657. The LREP Free Legal Helpline (1-800-876-6657) provides legal advice statewide, throughout the year. The helpline serves New Mexico residents age 55 and older. LREP does not have any income qualifica-tions. Each caller speaks with one of LREP’s four staff attorneys, each of whom is a highly qualified professional specializing in the legal issues that most affect New Mexico seniors. LREP staff attorneys provide legal advice and brief services in most areas of civil law. LREP staff attorneys may also refer callers to 650 private attorneys throughout New Mexico, if the staff attorney determines the caller re-quires legal assistance beyond the capabilities of the helpline.
