Loretta Kelley is the foremost American performer on the hardingfele (the traditional Hardanger ddle), an intricately decorated ddle native to Norway with sympathetic strings, a nearly at bridge, and a 300-year unbroken aural tradition. Loretta specializes in slått music, dance tunes rooted in the 18th century with sometimes unique asymmetrical rhythms, modal scales with "oating" intervals, and haunting tonalities. Loretta resides in Washington DC. The Hardanger ddle (in Norwegian, hardingfele) is often called the national instrument of Norway. It is similar to the violin and each one is a handmade work of art. Its most distinguishing feature is the four or ve sympathetic strings that run underneath the ngerboard and add echoing overtones to the sound. The traditional playing style is heavily polyphonic. A melody voice is accompanied by a moving "drone" voice. Together, the instrument and the playing style create the sound for which the Hardanger ddle is famous. The oldest known ddle, the "Jaastad Fiddle," may date from as early as 1651. By the mid-1700s the Hardanger ddle had become the dominant folk instrument in much of the inland south-central and western coastal areas of Norway. It is one of the few European folk music traditions that has survived the assaults of cultural change and foreign musical inuences to continue nearly unchanged up to the present day. Vidar Skrede and Loretta Kelley are highly regarded tradition bearers

and specialists of the unique 9-stringed Norwegian Hardanger fiddle. Take advantage of this rare opportunity for authentic Nordic folk music!

Vidar Skrede is a freelance Nordic folk musician on guitar, harding fiddle, fiddle and Greek bouzouki. He has a background in the traditional music from Rogaland (South West of Norway), and has a master degree in Nordic folk music at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. Vidar is from Haugesund, Norway, and currently resides in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Loretta Kelley is the foremost American performer on the hardingfele (the traditional Hardanger fiddle), an intricately decorated fiddle native to Norway with sympathetic strings, a nearly flat bridge, and a 300-year unbroken aural tradition. Loretta specializes in slått music, dance tunes rooted in the 18th century with sometimes unique asymmetrical rhythms, modal scales with "floating" intervals, and haunting tonalities. Loretta resides in Washington DC.

The Hardanger fiddle (in Norwegian, hardingfele) is often called the national instrument of Norway. It is similar to the violin and each one is a handmade work of art. Its most distinguishing feature is the four or five sympathetic strings that run underneath the fingerboard and add echoing overtones to the sound. The traditional playing style is heavily polyphonic. A melody voice is accompanied by a moving "drone" voice. Together, the instrument and the playing style create the sound for which the Hardanger fiddle is famous. The oldest known fiddle, the "Jaastad Fiddle," may date from as early as 1651. By the mid-1700s the Hardanger fiddle had become the dominant folk instrument in much of the inland south-central and western

coastal areas of Norway. It is one of the few European folk music traditions that has survived the assaults of cultural change and foreign musical influences to continue nearly unchanged up to the present day. (from hfaa.org)

Roo Lester is a nationally acclaimed dance instructor known for her clear teaching style and skill with beginners and experts alike. Roo is a recognized authority on and foremost exponent of Scandinavian Dance. She resides in Chicago and travels widely to teach. From Roo: “Many people think of Scandi-navian turning dances as the best thing this side of heaven. Some find the music and dance to be lyrical and flowing. Others find it to have drive and passion. Bring your friends, come and decide for yourself!”
