SAINT FACTS St Bartholomew—Feast Day August 24. He is counted as one of the 12 apostles. Not much is known of Bartholomew except that he left everything to follow Jesus, becoming his disciple, friend, an apostle entrusted with the continuation of his mission. St Monica - Feast day August 27. She is the patron saint of married women, mothers, conversions, alcoholics and abuse victims. She prayed for her husband and son, St Augustine for years and they were converted.

St Monica is a Doctor of the Church St Augustine– Feast day, August 28. He is the patron of brewers because of his former life of partying. He also spent many years living a wicked life with false beliefs. Through the prayers of his mother and the preaching of St. Ambrose, Augustine finally became convinced that Christianity is the one true religion. He was baptized, became a priest, a bishop, a famous catholic writer, Founder of religious priests, and one of the greatest saints that ever lived. He became very devout and charitable as well. ASK FATHER JAMES:

Eucharist: The Medicine of Immortality

In John 6:53-69, Jesus was introducing the people to the Eucharist as the medicine of immortality but instead of the people accepting, we see the beginning of the parting of ways with Jesus. The people became opposed to the novum testamentum (New Testament), the Eucharist, the “medicine of immortality.”

Jesus had been talking to them about being the bread from heaven and the necessity of eating this bread. His Jewish listeners understood the Bread of heaven, not as a sacramental offering, but as something from the past which they commemorate in a meal and sacrificial prayer of thanksgiving (Passover) for what God did for them in the wilderness (Exodus 13:8).

Jesus tried to introduce them to the Eucharist; “My flesh is real food and my blood real drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him” (John 6:56). “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves…This is the bread which came down from heaven; not as your fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever” (John 6: 53,58). In v. 60 his listeners “grumbled” and asked, “This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?” Then v. 66 informs us that “many of His disciples withdrew and were walking with Him no more.” The Jews asked, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”

After the people parted ways with the Eucharistic Jesus, Jesus then elicits a covenant commitment from his disciples – Do you also wish to go away? Simon Peter’s response is interesting and should speak for us too. Simon Peter answered him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.'" (John 6:67-69). Jesus is the Word made Flesh (John 1:14). Our Catholic doctrine is that Christ is "truly, really and substantially" present in the Eucharist. This doctrine emanates from John 6 and was fully imbibed at the Last Supper (Mark 14:22-25; 1Cor 1:22-23).
