On Thursday evening, 10th July in the School Hall, we were treated to stunning performances from our Lord Grey students. The standards of musicianship and performances were of a high quality. The programme was:

Dear Parents and Carers, Our recent Newsletters, and this one, will have given you a sense of the excitement and busyness of this term. Just this week I have attended our Celebration of Achievement, Sports Day, Community Day and Year 11 Prom following on from our Summer Concert last week. I am proud of the talents of our students and their ability to work together to make such occasions inclusive and enjoyable for everyone involved. Commendation Prize Winners

Celebration of Achievement Afternoon

On Tuesday 15th July one hundred and seventy students plus their parents, staff and Governors gathered in the main hall for a very enjoyable afternoon to celebrate the achievement of Lord Grey students in the past year. After a welcome from the Headteacher Jill Coughlan, in which she described the focus for improvement in the next year and introduced the school’s new mission statement and motto, Form Prizes and Commendation prizes were awarded for each form in years 7, 8, 9 and 10. The students who had been nominated as the winners of the Subject Prizes then received their magnificent books which have a commemorative inscription in them as well as a certificate. It is hoped the students will keep these books for many years to remind them of their great achievement. There were new Year Prizes of book tokens for students who have made a huge contribution to the school community. We heard excellent speeches from Sasha Hicks and Andrew Bond (Year 11) who were listened to with great attention as they encouraged the students to get involved with extra curricula activities and take active steps to build their confidence. The music from the Saxophone Ensemble, Aaron Alderman, Sophie Jaccard and Rebecca Brown was superb. David Giles, Vice Chair of Governors, then congratulated the students and their parents and thanked everyone for coming and then we moved to the Dining Room to enjoy some wonderful cakes and tea. Open University VisitOpen University VisitOpen University VisitOpen University Visit On the 5th July, Lord Grey School Post 16 Science Students visited the Open University. The day proved to be very educational for the students as it helped them to gain knowledge of different aspects of planetary science research among other things such as mass spectrometry. The students observed an array of scientific machinery and observed professional scientists demonstrating scientific projects including, Beagle 2 and the Rosetta Mission. “By speaking to current university science students we were given a confidence boost which inspired us to carry on studying sciences as well as giving us an open mind on continuing to study various types of science in high education.” Lindsay Pitcher “It was quite an experience and I found it most informative.” Ajira Bouchada “It was very interesting and at times I found it hard to believe how advanced all the technology was.” Grant Bullock “It was amazing to see advanced science in action.” Haydn Jones

Year 11 PromYear 11 PromYear 11 PromYear 11 Prom The Year 11 Prom took place at Wilton Hall last night (Thursday 17th July). It was a spectacular affair with fabulous array of prom dresses and suits on show. Mrs Carole Jones, Assistant Headteacher said; “This was a wonderful reunion for the our Year 11 students as a reward for all the hard work they put into their examinations. They really enjoyed themselves and have shown how they are blossoming into mature individuals, who have a lot of potential to contribute to our community.”

Sports day was a huge success this year. The whole format was changed to suit all students and to make the event more inclusive and fun, this decision was made last year as the PE department felt that it needed to consist of all sports and not just Athletics. A lot of research was undertaken to make sure that the day was a success. Months of planning went into the day and all the hard work by the PE staff paid off. The day's events started off with our student top runners competing in the morning and although, initially, the rain came down, the students enthusiasm was not dampened and spirits remained high. The standard of running was excellent as was the competitiveness. The afternoon consisted of a circuit for each year group whereby the stations had events such as welly wangling, target golf, and the most popular up 'n' under. Again the teamwork was excellent. However a sporting competition means there has to be winners and losers and the results were as follows: Year 7 winners - Paris Year 8 winners - Madrid Year 9 winners - Berlin Year 10 winners - Madrid

Overall winners were Madrid - congratulations to Mr James and his house. Many more thanks must go to the following people without their help the day would not have been successful; Bob Buckby and Adam Conn for setting up the sound system, Heads of House for organising their teams, Nigel Handyside and Heads of Year for patrolling the areas, all members of staff who kindly helped with running the stations, Post 16 members for running the stations, Form Tutors for organising their Tutor Groups, Jo Trevenna and her film crew for catching the days events and making a film about it all, the PE department for such excellent organisation and finally, Margaret Cutress, Sarah Lowe and Chelsey Rose for the scoring. The Poetry Pearls booklet was officially launched at the 30th Birthday Celebration on 19th June 2008. This book of poems was written by many friends and supporters in Milton Keynes to celebrate 30 years of support and service in Milton Keynes.

Lord Grey students have been raising funds for the charity Age Concern during the last few weeks. As it is the PEARL Anniversary of this charity and the National Year of Reading, they wanted to share with you one of the Poetry Pearls.

If this inspires you, these books are available for a small donation and you can find them in all the Age Concern shops and outlets in the Milton Keynes area.

The Weakest Link A small but enthusiastic crowd gathered in the School Dining Room on a recent summer evening (clashing with the finale of “Heroes”) to witness some of the greatest minds on our teaching staff locked in battle. Quiz master Ann(dy) Brockett was suitably intimidating and the contestants talked bravely but looked scared. First to walk the walk of shame was David Smith. He made the mistake of getting a question right in the first round and he had persuaded the others to take part. Next to go was Matt Tymon who wrote the names of everyone who nominated him on a ‘hit list’. The final showdown was between Amanda Dickinson

and Rachel Parish. Our winner cleverly answered most questions incorrectly in the opening rounds to avoid being voted off as a threat to the others. She then stormed past Rachel Parish in the last round, to be declared the winner of 27 wagon wheels and 27 house points. Congratulations Amanda Dickinson you were the strongest link. The LGA would like to thank everyone who took part. On Friday 11th July the Milton Keynes Netball Awards were held at the Broughton Hotel. This is an annual event which celebrates MK Netters achievements over the past year and the improvement to game play for both the players and their teams. This year Lord Grey School have excelled, receiving three individual awards and team awards for all our players. Well done to Toni Ford, Year 11 who received the most improved player, Amy Gould, Year 8 who received coaches player and Georgia Dunn, Year 8 who received most promising player. The wards were presented by the under 17s England Coach, Jo Munnion.
