“At Lord Baden-Powell Elementary our mission is to encourage a
sense of community by providing opportunities that include and nurture all learners respecting their diversity.”
November 2017 NEWSLETTER
Hello from Frosty LBP,
Mr. McMitchell reminded us all this morning that Cher would like to remind you to, “Turn Back Time”, this weekend. It is hard to
believe that we were in t-shirts earlier this week and today it was winter jacket time. Please remember to dress your children for the
weather. There were some very cold hands out there today.
There are so many incredible studies or activities going on around LBP which you may have already heard about via FreshGrade:
Division 1- How one decision can change someone’s life for the better (Wonder); LBP Monopoly during Math
Division 2- Natural resources; Metis Culture & People during French; Free-verse about War & Peace
Division 3- Landforms; Cultures and Place Value
Division 4- Ecosystems and how they need to be protected
Division 5- Making Aboriginal Poppies during Art; how to use capital letters properly
Division 6- Turkey Traps that were more creative than effective
We will tap into our primary divisions in the next newsletter.
Lost n’ Found
Speaking of jackets, please come by and find any lost clothing or items that are on display in the front foyer. We have already
reunited a number of items with their owners with little or no effort. All unclaimed items will be donated to those in need.
Student Pick-up and Drop off
I need to start off by saying that I understand the challenges that two working parents may have and the struggles that take place
from time to time. Many of us are parents too. I am not speaking of a 5-10 minute delay in pick-up. These things happen. Where I
need your help and support is when you are counting on the staff at LBP to monitor your children well beyond the time frame of the
school day. We have unsupervised students being dropped off 30-45 minutes before the bell and students that are waiting until 4:00
p.m. or later for pick-up. In most cases, parents outside will alert the staff that a student has not been picked up. However, students
are playing on the playground or on the gravel field and they do not have supervision. These are typically 8-10 year olds and we are
giving them way too much responsibility. Please make the necessary adjustments to your schedule, find a family that could lend a
hand or provide your child with a house key.
Tardiness
We have several students arriving 5-20 minutes late each morning. This is disruptive to the learning of the other students and your
child will feel out of sorts wondering what they are doing next or what they are missing. Your teachers will do their best to ease this
transition but they may not be available to talk with the parents while they are teaching. Please assist us in making your child’s day
as anxiety-free as possible.
Bundle up and have a great weekend,

Drop Everything And Read
October 23 was the BC D.E.A.R. Challenge. All of us at LBP did
just that; we Dropped Everything and Read for 20 minutes in
the gym. We were joined by several players from the
Coquitlam Express Hockey Team and our
Assistant Superintendent Carey Chute. After
our reading time, our Grade 5 students enjoyed a game of floor hockey
with the team!
A Successful Book Fair! Books! Books! Books! Thanks to all the LBP students, parents and friends
who supported our Book Fair. We raised $3,012.54 in Book Fair profits
with which we will put books in the library and books and
educational activities in the classrooms! Way to go LBP! This may be
our best year yet! Special thanks to Rie Vongnakhone for organizing
the Book Fair and to Marissa Langstroth who stepped up to support her.
Thanks, as well, go out to the Book Fair helpers for giving their time: Vincci Yau, Jung
Hyun Lee, Ai Paul, Marivic Segundo, Danica Hunter, Sheri Ablitt,
Esther Chan, Dawoon Chung, Ana Lazo, Hardeep Girn, Cristina
Liberatore, Mel Franco, Orion Huel, Jessie Ho, Mary Catherine
Moseley, Jeremy Langstroth. We couldn’t do it with out you!
Well done, LBP! Arman Ghandhari in Div. 2 won the door prize of
$25 in books, and his teachers got to pick $25 worth of books, for
their classroom, as well. Our next scheduled Book Fair will be in February.

PHOTO RETAKES - MONDAY, November 6th
We are looking for gently used clean children's clothing to fill our table in the main hallway next to the staff room. We appreciate your generosity as the winter season approaches.
Thank-you for helping our community.
