By now all of you have received your Christmas party flyer with all the information on the orange sheet. Open your wallet and let your grandchildren have fun with Miss Louise Morikawa. Five dollars for adults and children under 12 are free, even K Mart can not· 9i ve you this kind of bargain. See you there on saturday, December 12th at 5:!O P.M.

It seems to me that Able Chapter members were never bugged by Hurricane Iniki, at least no one told me of any encounter with that storm. Just so we have maybe one Iniki story in the Abl~ col u mn , her e ism y s tor y 0 f t hat day and 0 f the day s t h a "t followed.

We live here in the flood area of Aina Haina so the notice to evacuate our home is no stranger to us. So with the police patrol loud speaker blasting warning to get out, we gathered our necessities and jumped into our car and rocketed over to our daughter' s pI ace. We are still waiting

Our next problem happened the day after electricity went out. My other half said that the drainag~ seemed slow so I said no trouble, I'll use the half inch drainage sn~ke and fix it up in no time. The upshot was that we had to call both the Rotor Rooterman and a plumber, both twice. I 'mhappy to say that after four days of struggle, the water is now going merrily down the drainage pipe.

Now·that problem number two was behind us, we thought we could sl.ep in peace. Remember the heavy rain of a few weeks ago? I woke up around midnight to hear ~he sound of dripping. My roof was leaking. The roofing contractor we called next morning must be: busy_ Now. that the weather is fine, maybe we can wait a couple of weeks more.

Maybe it is the stressful month that we went through that is the cause of further woes, but during the 1 ast coupl e of weeks, my wife and I have seen the inside of both the CT and MRl machines. And' now I can find my car at the Kuakini parking structure without going up and down the ~arage looking for my car.

. . ~. . . -

We departed Honolulu International"airport on October 8th on JAL 73 at 11:00 A.M. for our 19 day Autumn Tohoku tour escorted by Walter "Biffa" Horiguchi and Kazuo "Opu" Hiranaka. Among the group of 43 people were members, wives and widows. Patricia Arakaki (Pluto "AU) and sisters June Putenma and Janice Toda, Gladys Kawakami (A), Tommy & Barbara Nishioka (A), HBiffa H

Horiguchi (A), Yasuto & Helen Purusho (B), Fred Kanemura (B), John Kihara (B) I Ken & Mieko Muroshige (B), Wilfred Fujishige (B), "stu" Yoshioka (B), "China" Yamashina (B), Stanley & Fumie Hamamura (HO), Pred & Nancy Takahashi (HQ) 1 Arthur & Frances Kamiyama (HO), Nancy N~kamura (HO), Beatrice Shinoda (HO), Itsuki & Elsie Oshita (HO), Stella Nakayama (D), Ruth Watanab~ (D) & Helen Nikaido (D). The flight over was smooth, 7 i/2 hours. Upon arrival at Narita Int'l Airport, we were met by Rudy Yamashita of JTB. It took us over two hours to get to our hotel from the airport. The traffic was just awful.

Oct lOth was all day tree at leisure.

Oct. 11th, Sund~y., We began our tour headed for Aizu-wakamatsu. It was .an all:day drive, stops made only for "544ft and lunch. B~ing Sunday, traffic was heavy, never saw so many cars.

>,' ": I'; ;

Our tour. included Pukushima, Sendai, Matsushima, Kesennuma, Morioka;. Hirosaki, Towada, Oirase, Akita ... Niigata, Sado Island and Nikko. We. were fortunate to have many karaoke singe.rs to entertain us • Arthur & Frances Komiyama, "Stu" Yoshioka ,.,Frank Hanzawa ... Taeko :Pujise, "Pro" Tanaka, "Biffa" Moriguh{. "Opu" Hiranaka, Nancy .Nakamura, Stella Nakayama, Lillie, Kondo, Beatrice Shinoda, ltsuki & Elsie Oshita & Gladys Kawakami ~ ,,' . . ,

On the way to Matsushima by ferry, many sea gulls followed t~e ferry. Passengers .. fed them and they would catch the food in mid-air Had lunch at one of the local restaurants in Matsushima. We were served oysters, I don't know how many

Page 7: lOOTH INFANTRY BATTALION VETERANS CLUB filei looth infantry battalion veterans club monthl y '. news ** vecember, 1992 "come ye thankful people come" "let us give thanks" by au

"stu" had but strong stomach.

Gladys ate 12 of them. It didn't bother We were worried, but nothing happened

her

In Sendai I noticed the sidewalks had small verticle concrete pieces raised, about ,1/2 inch and abol,lt a foot wide. "Opu" told us tha,t is ,was the pathway for the :blin,d. A few of us went to eat chanko nabe in Sendai. I felt like I was eating with sumotories-yokozunas "Opu"", "China", Rudy; ozekis-Alex, "Pro", Kenji & Tomy; komusubis-Taeko, Barbara, Ruth and me. The chanko nabe was real ono.

Kes enn uma was cloudy and ra i ny,. We wer e taken by Mr. Usui, friend of Naoji Yamagata, on a tour of the sea products market. Fishes, fishes, fishes:-.,.never saw such monstrous fishes.

We proceeded to Karakawa Penin~ula to visit the Tsunami 'museum and experienced the forces of a simulated tidal wave. Sure was scary. At Morioka we were served "wanko-soba" for lunch. In a bowl, they serve you enogh soba,'for one mouthful and as you gulp the sob a , the wa i t res s who is's t a nd i n 9 b a c'k 0 f you i s rea d y t 0

drop another mouthful. On the table there were various types of condiments but you don't have much, time for them. They kept dropping the soba in your bowl. Gladys Kawakami ate 41 mouthful and Rudy 49. Others ate between,' 10 to 20. Frances and Arthur kept telling the waitress pau, pau, but she didn't understand what pau meant so kept dropping the soba in the bowl, finally they had to put their hands over the bowl.

We cruised along Lake Towada- the colors of the autumn leaves were just beautiful--brought back memories of past trips.

In Akita, we were allowed to pick 5 apples each. Sure had our fill of apples--we peeled them, cut and, served them on the bus. "Opu" bought 6 apple pies which we cut on the bUs." He didn't expect that they would be selling them. The last row of the bus looked like a portable kitchen. At many of these service areas (shi-shi stops), we must pass through 'the store before going to the o-te-arai (restroom). The store lets you use the o-te-arai so then on the way out you see all these tempting foods and you spend money. Smart, huh! At one stop they had' a restroom for the handicapped which was big and nice. "Biffa" pressed the wrong button (emergency button) and here came a fellow rushing out to come to his aid. "Biffa" was so embarrassed. The line in the ladies room is often long so we just go in the men's john. We, just ignore the men using the urinal. Only in Japan you can do that and don't get arrested. Woul dri' t dare do that he re . The N ish i ok as, Os hit as, R u.t h & I us u all y had r 0 oms n ext t '0 e a c hot her. After our morning walk, "China"" got off the wrong floor, tried to 'open the door and the security guard passing by thought he had forgotten his key so opened the door for him to the surprise of the occupants. Barbara who saw "China" get off the wrong floor thought he and HBiffa n had changed rooms so kept her mouth shut. Not so good after a refreshing walk.

We spent a day on Sado Island going by jet-foil. Bus driv~rs do not sing but the driver we had on Sado was the first we ever heard. He had a beautiful voice. Getting back from Sado, first thing we did was head for the rest room. Nancy noticed toilet' tissue hanging from Elsie's pants. Elsie used some toilet tissue as a seat cover and it had clinged on to her. ~Elsie, you lucky Nancy was in back of you.

During: the tour, strong arm Elsie broke her luggage Luckily Barbara had the same kind of key so it save4 Elsie purchasing a new luggage. Never a dull moment with Elsie.

Our last lap of the tour, we spent a night in Oku-Nikko-Konishi Hotel. A plush hotel with warm toilet seats plus push buttons where you can have your bottom washed and blow dried No need to use toilet tissue. "Opu" said he never felt so clean. We were told not to attempt using it because we couldn't understand the Japanese. Curious person like Fred Takahashi stood facing the h q w 1 and pressed t h eb u t ton s and got water splashed on him. Goqd thing he didn't get splashed on his face.

Oct 23rd back in Tokyo, Barbara & Tommy came back late from visi ting their cousin. She knocked on our door and gave us g~~pes to eat. Ruth, Elsie, Barbara and I squatted in the hallway ~nd munched away in our nighties. There were ten of us that walked every morning (sometimes we had drop-outs)-"Opu"., "China" , Fred Kanemura, Stanl ey Hamamura, Mrs. Morikubo, Ms Miyamoto, Kanji Nishida, Elsie, Barbara and me. We would start at either 5:,15 or 5:30 a.m. and walk for 20 to 30 minutes.

Wh~n you travel with "Biffa" and '''Opu'', it's like a family. We get so used to one another sometimes you do the darnest things like "pooting" without a care.

I don't know how reliable the following tip is but two ladies (I won't mention who they are) claim it works. One said put sake (brandy is better) in a bottle and drop red food coloring so it looks like cough medicine and sip it when you cough. The other said drink white wine when you cough, it opens up the passage.

Thank you "Biffa" and "Opu" for the wonderful time we had ana for yhour patience with us, having to repeat over and over,

.can't help it at our age, hard of hearing often times the mind goes wand'ering. Thank you "Opu" for taking us to Yokohama and Ame-yoko-cho. We appreciate all the extra things you-·both .. ha,v.e done for us - passing out goodies, juices, beer, sending boxes back to Tokyo, placing orders for us, etc. Can't find a nicer, more thou~htful pair of escorts.

BAKER CHAPTER NEWS By Yasuo Takata

The last mini-reunion at Las Vegas was at Flamingo-Hilton, a huge place, where we almost got lost trying to find the Banquet Hall. - Finall y after going up, sideways, and up again, turning right, walking a long way, and right again. We were the first there and had to wait for the gang.

The, dinner started after our lovely gals from Baker Chapter ukulele club and Ray Nosaka sang "Table Grace" After a delightful dinner, the gals again started the entertainment with the singing of "Kumbaya". Following this, there was Karaoke, and then jokes as only Jane Matsunami can tell, ,and a song that only Ray Nosaka can sing "I drinkee too much beea". There were several other Karaoke singers like Mits Doi, Toe Yoshino, Goro Sumida,(profesionally known as the Three Monkeys", Ted Ohira, and Mike Takahashi who made a big hit with his singing of "Kanaka Wai Wai. During the evening Ray Nosaka brought over a woman to sit at our tabl e. She was none other tan Haruto Kuroda's sister. She was happy to sit with, us for we had Ken Kaneko, Kengo Hiyano, Candy Tanaka and myself, all Baker Chapter boys who know Haruto.

Then I hopped tables to get other boys to talk to her about Haruto--I can't rem~mber them all--Yoshiichl Ono, Douglas Tanaka, Jessie Hirata, Young 0.' Kim and others. Sorry if I have forgotten some names. We took pictures -of them for her so that she can write to Haruto telling him that she met his friends in Las Vegas.

The aftermath of Hurricane Iniki brought out many stories for the newspapers about the people of Kauai. One story that really caught my eye was about the Kawamotos. Sadao and Kazue, husband and wife team of Kawamoto's Barber Shop in Lihue got a big praiseworthy write-up in the the Honolulu Star Bulletin of Octob.r 6, 1992.

The article, which included a photo of Kazue and a long time customer, started off with "Some peopl e go to psychiatrists to vent their frustrations about cleaning up after Hurricane Iniki" But not so with others. They head for Kawamoto's Barber Shop for the "Treatment." For onl y . $6.00, they get a refreshing and stimulating haircut and at the same time, a therapeutic session while sitting on the barber chair instead of lying on a couch. The customrs pour out their problems and the Kawamotos, who also suffered severe damages to their home, listen. When need be the understanding and compassionate barbers give them advice about 1 i f e . Then aft e r the " t rea t men t " .. t he c us tom e r s 1 e a vet he barbershop light-hearted, relaxed and relieved of Iniki woes. I think " the Kawamotos should change their business name to something with a medical tone, for example, Kawamoto's Tonsorial Clinic. Keep up the good work.

Prexy Saito invited Mrs. Barbara Kawakami, a person with many tal ents as our speaker. She is a professional seamstress wi th degrees in fashion design and merchandizing, writes poems, does translations and interpretations of Japanese to English and visa-versa. She's an author with a book coming o~t very shortly and she is involved in the preservation of oral history in Asiatic CuI tures, primari 1 y of Japanese and Korean immigrants during the late 1800 to 1950, the era of the contract laborers (Kanaku Imin) in the sugar plantations of Hawaii. Her presentation was titled "Picture Brides", which some of our moth~rs we~e when they came to Hawaii. She had met and talked with some of the mothers of our members who came as picture brides. Her video presentation was very authentic, with the actual person being interviewed, talking about their o x p e.c tat ion s w hen the y I eft J a pan t 0 be wed t 0 a ric h goo d looking man in the picture, but on arrival, was met by a much older, not too good looking man, unlike the one in the picture. The person confided about the disappointments, hardships, anguish and frustrations that they experienced du~ing those days and how they tried to overcome it by the help of friends neighbors and by forming into groups for mutual assistance such as "·t:anomoshi" kenjin kai'~, etc. At the conclusion of her, presentation, she was given a big applause, and asked to return for mo~e of the same in the future. It later dawned on me that Mrs. Kawakami was talking about our parents, yours and mine, and the way they struggled and lived through their pioneering days in the cane, pineapple and coffee fields of Hawaii.

Prexy Saito call ed our meeting to order after the speaker' s presentation and reported that club 100 donated $5,000 to the' Iniki Relief through the American Red Cross. Mini-Reunion: On the last week of October, I participated in my fir s t min i - r e un ion. Wei eft, her eat 10: 30. p. m., a r r i vi n gin San Francisco earl y in the morning. We had' a 3 1/2 hour 1 ay over and when we finally. boarded the plane bound for Las Vegas, we were told that they were looking for the lost':pilot. "What no pilot?" He is u$ually the first one on board and should be waiting' for his passengers to be loaded. We waited for about an hour and 40 minutes before another pilot came' to take us to Vegas. I said to mysel f, as soon' as I get to the hotel, I'm just gonna drop everything and take a long nap--but it was not to be. The hotel rooms were not available until 3 p.m. We were herded into the lobby where I looked for the softest seat, dropped myself and took a nap. Refreshed a hit, I got up and walked around the casino to see if I had any luck, and searched my pockets for some loose quarters. But luck was not there. At 3 p.m. , there was some mix up in getting our keys and meal tickets. Some of the guys had to wait till later in the evening before they got their rooms. We went up to our room and found that they had delivered the wrong golf bag to our room and no luggage for my room mate. Hamamoto went out hunting for his stray bags and I crawled under the blankets and had a long nap. At about 7 p.m., we decided to visit the hospitality room where we enjoyed our dinner for the evening.

After the excitement of the first day, all golfers were told to meet at the front entrance, later changed to the rear entrance leaving the hotel at 7:30 the next morning. Painted Desert Golf Course is a lush g1":een pIt of land midst brown desert like background. Our foursome of Jim Hiranaka, who is a transplant from Kauai, Mike Takahashi and Roy Nakamura. The grass is not like what we have here and the rough is really rough. You have to search for your ball in them tall grass, hack the baIlout with, your irons at the same time you try to hit it on the 'f'a<irwayi... T'h'e"wea'th'er l 'wa-s th'e .only .thing that coopera'te.d" ... ,and"as for golfing, it was a disaster for me. The rules were changed the next day to winter rules. You may clean your ball, move your ball to improve its lie and if your ball goes out on the gravel paths, you are allowed to move it to a better location, etc. We, all agreed that it should make it much easier, but the outcome for me was the same, infact it was worse. Ah, ,but they say golf is a fun game ... All in all, I enjoyed it ---grumbling and all-about the water hazards and short bushes that stood between me and the greens.

Moola Land Vegas: Undoubtedly, when you return from Las Vegas, your friends will ask "you make' money?" When you see all da gadgets of chance, even a guy like me who no like gambling looks for some loose change in da pocket to try my luck. The more you feed the one arm bandits. the more they w~nt. There should be a machine somewhere in this place which gives out more than it takes, but I COUldn't find one, so I asked Hama it he wants to distribute some of his mon.y in the other casinos.' Guess he felt kinda sorry for me so we:w~nt across to 'Cesear's Palace. I got some change ,and played for a while and BINGO, I made my losses back. Ne.xt we went to the Mirage, hoping to make more, it it turned out like the n~meof the place-just a mirage. We visited the Ferryboat and the Imperial with the same resultsthose bandits didn't even cough for me. Well as I started I distributed my small wealth amongst those giant enterprises, trying in my small way to give a lift to the economy of America. I hope by the next reunion time my investments will bear some interests plus" so, until the next one "gokigen yoo, sayonara".

November: Last week, th~ officers held an executive session to discuss thhe agenda for the meeting on November 20th. The chairman of the Award Committee is Susumu Ota, your truly was asked to chair the nomination committee and Walter Iwasa to c h air the New Yea r s Ban que t Co mm itt e e t 0 be he 1 d at Dot f son January 17, 1993 from 11:00 a.m. The cost will be about $12 to $13.00. The committee has been working with the Community Affairs and Social Service Committee in planning th~ December 13th Christmas Social. The families of the Sons & Daughters members are invited to participate in c~roling and spreading good cheer .to Club 100 veterans who are ill or house-bound.

Following the caroling, everyone will gather at the clubhouse for a special home-cooked dinner and merriment. The children will try their luck at breaking pinatas and will be plea~antly surprised at the arrival of Santa! Saving the best for last, the adults will be treated to the sounds of Jonathan Nosaka'~ band and are welcome to sing and dance the night away.

If you know of any Club 100 veterans who might appreciate having the carolers sing for them, please contact Drusilla T'::lll;;\<,,! .:t 235-1343 or Kay Mizushima at 737-4147. Please note that. there is absolutely no obligation of recipient f£Hlli I i e~c; 1.0 provide refreshments. This activi ty is meant to spread the warm feeling of Christmas, and carolers. who will sing outside of the homes, will happily move on to·spread their joy with othel- families.

Please be sure to save December 13 on your calendar and send in the attached registration form as soon as possible. Also, stay tuned for the following fun future activities in 1993: Pupu/cocktail Get-together (March), Family Picnic (August), and Grandparents Appreciation Luncheon (October).
