(LVP & LVT) with Water Proof Core (WPC)When laminates hit the scene in the late 1990’s even I was impressed. Finally,

a tough as rocks floor that was high-heel proof, gouge & tear proof, high scratch resistance, and affordable to install. The best part, it almost looked like wood or

ceramic tile. But darn, if the cat or dog spilled its water bowl, or forbid you used too much water to wash the floor. You soon noticed

seam swelling on the board edges and you had a visual problem forever!

Why don’t the laminate manufacturers just make a laminate with a WPC? Because the high-pressure

technology has not yet been developed for attaching laminate melamine layers to a WPC. So, in slips some real

game changers, LVP & LVT with the WPC. Adura Max, COREtec Plus, Forte’ Pro are a few brands that you’ll see at

CBL Floors. These are not laminates but vinyl floating floors that have a waterproof core with sound barriers attached. No more worries about the spills that happen in every kitchen. Hardwood Basics, Construction : Solid vs. engineeredSolid wood is referring to a ¾” thick piece of solid wood. It can be factory finished (limited colors) or on site finished (custom colors). The wood is generally stapled to a plywood subfloor. High humidity and drastic temperature changes will result in the solid wood expanding and contracting according to the moisture percentage in the air. In Minnesota, we have all the factors that affect solid wood. Cupping, gapping, swelling can be expected if a houses’ indoor environment is not maintained with an air conditioner and a humidifier to the required moisture levels during Minnesota’s 4 seasons.

Engineered wood consists of a combination of various layers of different wood species bonded together with a veneer of a wood species bonded to the top layer. Different wood species absorb moisture at different

rates. The bonded layers are cross hatched so the effect moisture has on wood is minimized. This

is ideal for Minnesota. Engineered woods can therefore be floated below grade in Minnesota

basements, and any room of the house regardless of underlayment type. The finish

is applied at the factory and is furniture grade with a choice of different gloss levels. Although engineered woods cannot be completely re-colored like solid

wood, they can be refinished 2–3 times. An air conditioner and humidifier is also required in a home or the manufacturers warranty will be void.
