World War One
Last week our grade got a box of World
War 1 relics from the Australian War
Memorial. There was a helmet, slouch
hat with the rising sun badge, Victory
Medal that the soldiers won and the
tunic that the soldiers wore. There was a
Red Cross armband that the stretcher
bearers wore on their arms and a nurse’s
shoulder cape. The water bottle was
made of tin. The bullet was just a practise one. There
were some postcards and some army badges. We
were lucky that we got the relic box because not
many people get the box from the War Memorial to
study the objects.

Anzac Day Here in the Ruby Red classroom we
learnt all about ANZAC day and what
it was about. We talked about how we
remember the soldiers who served
and died in all of the wars. We talked
about WW1 the most, because that
was the first major war that Australia
was involved in. We talked about why
we went to war and how important it is to
remember all of the people that were brave and
helped others. We created craft poppies that
represent the flowers in the fields at Gallipoli
and veteran soldiers.

ANZAC Day
In class students learnt about Anzac Day.
Students learnt that the letters in ANZAC stands
for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
We discussed that on ANZAC day we
remembered those who served in a war. In
Better Buddies students made poppies.

SCHOOL ORGANISATION
SUBJECT CONTRIBUTIONS AND EXCURSION LEVY Thank you to those families that have paid or are making regular payments towards the subject contribution and excursion levy for 2015. Many educational programs at Nilma are paid for upfront for students to use as they begin the school year. Subject Contributions are used to pay for these programs and for school materials and other classroom programs. Families that have not yet paid the subject contribution and excursion levy are asked to have this paid by Thursday 7th May. Please speak to the Office staff for more information. For students in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 there is a cost of $25 for Winter Sport. If the excursion levy has been paid there is no cost for this program. Phillip Island Camp payments must be paid to the school in full by Thursday 14th May for students to be able to attend. Thank you to those families that have already paid for camp and those that have been making regular payments. Payment for both excursions, to the Shrine of Remembrance and Healesville Sanctuary are due by Monday 4th May. If you have paid the excursion levy, there is no cost for these excursions. Family Statements are attached to the newsletter.
Parent Club have organised for the Mother’s Day/Special Person’s stall to be held on Thursday 7th May 2015.

YEAR 6 TO 7 TRANSITION FORMS Transition forms for our Year 6 students have been distributed. Could these forms please be signed and returned to the school by tomorrow, Friday 1st May.
PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE This year our school will again be participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Students from year Foundation to 6 are able to participate in the challenge which involves students reading a set number of books by 31st August. This year we expect ALL students to participate in the Challenge as part of our classroom reading and literature enrichment program. Year 3 -6 will read a total of 15 books, at least 10 of which must be from the Challenge booklist and 5 of their own choice. Year Foundation—2 will read or ‘experience’ 30 books with 20 or more coming from the Challenge list and the remaining can be their own choice. ‘Experiencing’ a book for Foundation—2 can include a range of class or home activities such as sharing of a Big Book, shared reading at school and home, reading along with a text and being read to with parents, siblings and others.
To participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge students will need to have parents complete the Registration and Consent form and return to school. A copy of the form was attached to last week’s newsletter. Upon completion of the Premier’s Reading Challenge students will receive a certificate from the Premier and have their names published on the Reading Challenge Website. Students can borrow many of the titles on the Challenge Reading List from our library. The Warragul Library will also be an excellent source of books for the Challenge.
The Challenge provides students with a great opportunity to read a range of literature and a real focus for their own reading for pleasure. Thanks for your support. Good reading!

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT “Worried that uou’re always yelling at the kids!”. Book in for a chat with the Chaplain, Mon-days or Wednesdays and come away with some helpful ideas to put into action.
These past weeks we have shared the 5 ways of loving our ‘kids’ (love languages) that bring out the best in them and builds resilience for life.
1. Physical touch 2. 2. Words of encouragement 3. Quality time 4. Gifts 5. Acts of service
No 3 quality time if the parents’ gift to the child. It says “You are important. I like being with you.”
That doesn’t mean you have to go somewhere special—just do something together (cook pancakes, dig a hole, plant some seeds, paint a picture, design something for the garden, game of marbles, build a cubby from scrap, clean out the old clothes from the cupboard and then go “Op” shopping.)
If possible don’t make the mistake of including another child. Kids have a way of pushing each others buttons and getting the parent ‘onside’ against the other child and before you know it you may end up yelling or threatening. Each child craves your undivided attention and will thrive on just on e hour together (not grocery shop-ping—that doesn’t count). If you have several children, you need to look for times when you can be alone with each one and schedule it into each week (routine helps the child know that it is going to happen even if things go pear shaped in other ways.) Remember ‘one on one’ time is not a time to reprimand or discipline, that will happen as events arise. It is a time to have fun, listen and work together. From a parents perspective, it is unconditional love toward your child. It should include pleasant, loving eye contact regardless of the child’s behaviour or circumstance.
