Help us to reduceTAILGATINGTailgating, also known as piggybacking,is when a person gains unauthorized accessinto a restricted area by following anauthorized person and not showingany credentials.

Tailgating occurs when employees:

• Forget their access card or key and askother employees to give them access

• Are polite and they hold the door openfor the next person

• Are being helpful and hold the door for somebody with their hands busy

• Don’t want to challenge a personattempting to tailgate. This may bebecause the employee does not knowhow to, or is afraid to confront the otherperson. They don’t want to offend orembarrass the other person and createa scene.

When tailgating is not curtailed, it becomesa security risk as it can be used to gainaccess to a facility for various reasonsincluding theft, accessing confidentialinformation, or access to a person.

Some of the methods used are:

• Approaching the entrance at thesame time as an employee or group ofemployees and following them in

• Having something in hands (two coffeecups, bags, etc.) which “forces” theauthorized employee to hold the doorfor them

• Waiting for somebody to exit and enteringthe space before the door closes

• In general, tailgating is a form ofsocial engineering, so acting the partincreases its chances of successsignificantly. A person acting like theybelong makes employees believe theperson is authorized and they givethem access into the area withoutconfronting them

Employee support is critical in implementinga tailgating strategy as they will be the onesenforcing the policy. They can:

• Either approach unknown persons toconfirm they are supposed to be in thearea. They should not look at this as aconfrontation, but approach the personin a friendly manner

– “Hi! Can I help you? Who are youlooking for? Let me show you wheretheir office is”

– “Hi! I see you don’t have your accesscard yet. Are you new? My name isAndrei and I work in security. Wheredo you work?”

– “Hi! I don’t remember seeing youbefore. Are you one of our vendors?”

• Or if they are uncomfortable addressing the person, they can report the incidentto the Security Desk at 403-716-2000 [email protected] report should be made as soon as possible so it can be investigated.

Don’t forget muster points during emergency building evacuation

Those using the North Exits should go as far as you possibly can to the North area of the Livingston Place Courtyard(in front of the Chinese Cultural Centre with overflow into the Parking lot adjacent to the Chinese Cultural Centre).Inclement weather muster point is the Eau Claire Market.

Those using the South Exits should go to the +15 Level of BP Centre (regardless ofweather conditions). Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Thank you for noting this important information.

There is no reason for anyone who is anemployee or visitor to not have an accesscard. Our building has a Day Pass Programso that if a tenant forgets their access card, they stop at the Security Desk and they signout a Day Pass Access Card for the day. TheDay Pass is programmed identically to thetenant’s regular card so it will allow thesame access. At the same time, thetenant’s regular card is disabled for theday for security reasons.

Extra access cards are kept at theReception Desk for employees that forgettheir own, or for visitors. If employees losetheir access card, they should contact thesecurity desk for a replacement.

If you have questions or concerns aboutthis issue, please contact Andrei Rotundu,Building Security Supervisor, at [email protected] at 403-303-2409.

Lights off for Earth Hour

Earth Hour is celebrated every year in late March, around the time of the Spring and Autumnequinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres. This is when sunset times are almost thesame in both hemispheres. Organizers say this ensures the greatest visual impact for a global'lights out' event.

In support of Earth Hour 2014 on March 29, all four downtown Bentall Kennedy buildings turnedoff the lights between 8:30 and 9:30 pm to raise awareness about climate change and theenvironment. In so doing we joined in a now worldwide phenomenon involving millions ofpeople and organizations around the globe.

April 22 Earth DayEvery year on April 22, over a billion people in 190 countries take action for Earth Day, making itthe largest, most celebrated environmental event in the world. Over the past four years, BentallKennedy has celebrated Earth Day by providing more than 1,000 tree seedlings to our tenants sothey could plant them in their backyards. Like Earth Days of the past, Earth Day 2014 will focuson the unique environmental challenges of our time through its global theme: Green Cities.

This year we have decided to partner with Forest Recovery Canada for Earth Day and havegiven them a $4,000 donation that will allow them to plant 1000 trees in Alberta areasaffected by last year’s flood.

For more information about this important event, visit theEarth Day website at http://www.earthday.org.
