LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCTAbbie Topping

From the Preliminary task I was personally able to see what I was best suited at to help with the final cut of ‘It will happen yesterday’. The Preliminary task helped show our skills in filming the different shots like 180 degrees, shot reverse shot and match on action. Without the preliminary task I would have found it difficult to use all these techniques to create an opening sequence.

This task was retrospectively a lot easier and quicker to film and edit together than the opening sequence we planned to film later on. We had no problems when filming and editing, and for one thing we could film this within two hours and edit it altogether. Whereas, our main task took a month to film and edit it altogether.

Whilst editing the preliminary, I was shocked at how time consuming editing was. It took close to over an hour for only 20 seconds of clip. This worried me, as I was unsure if we would have enough time to complete filming and editing the whole 2 minutes together for our main task.

However, I would say that it spurred me on to complete the task in time. During the end, there was a lot of pressure put on to us to get it complete, however with the help from others and the software we were able to complete our final cut.

The preliminary task gave us an idea of how to use the Sony Vegas software. It also allowed us to get use to the equipment before creating our task. However for the preliminary we used simple editing techniques. This did not prepare us for using some of the more complicated versions on Sony Vegas. This is where we used our own imitative and looked up tutorials online. I believe that this is one of the bad things to do with preliminary tasks are you do not use more complicated editing techniques on Sony Vegas.

I also learnt what camera angles are best used within filming for the different types of genres within the filming business. For example within horror genres, many of the shots are close ups, extreme close ups and point of view shots. This is to make the audience feel as though it is them going through the experience.

I have also learnt how to edit sound in clips like music or speech. At first I thought it would be an easy task however the preliminary proved me wrong. Getting the lip syncing was the hard part of that task.
