shopping area - giving to a fl avour of what to expect.

When looking at the shops, Stoke Road has art, crafts and hobbies, bicycles, leather goods, butchers, fi shmongers, luggage, furniture, shopping trolleys, sports equipment, home appliances, prom gowns, bridal wear, fl owers, beds, carpets, soft furnishings, luxury handmade soaps, bath treats, cupcakery, craft shops offering unusual and ‘one-off ’ gifts. Opposite Waitrose is a tearoom for tea, cakes, breakfast, lunch, coffee. There’s Thai, Indian and Italian restaurants and even a store selling everything you need for your own Thai & Oriental cooking.

Now, on to the services, there’s picture framing, bespoke tailoring, nail bars, footwear repair and clothing alterations, costume hire, leather repairs, canine beauticians, dry cleaning, bike repairs, television repairs, solicitors, barbers, chiropodists, tattooists to name but a few.

So next time you are heading out why not head down Stoke Road, you might just pick up a hidden gem.

If you take a walk out of Gosport town, past Morrisons and Walpole Park you come to the traditional shopping street that is Stoke Road o ering a treasure trove of niche businesses, many of which are independently owned.

Stoke Road doesn’t offer a modern retail shopping complex, what it does provide is a classic shopping experience on a road, steeped in history, through which you can still drive and park your car on the road, right outside the shops.

If parking spaces on the road are occupied there are short stay car parks (most of which are free) at various locations along the street allowing you the time you need to explore the plethora of shops and services at your leisure.

Over the next few pages of our magazine are just a small selection of the unique, and somewhat quirky, businesses that make up part of Gosport’s principle

Christmas is over and with all the wonderful over-indulgences, now’s the time to act on those New Years Resolutions.

So start the new year with a detox and lose those extra inches, a Body Wrap treatment is a good way for instant inch loss and detox, and one that combines a body scrub and massage will leave you feeling revitalised and cleansed.

For many people, the cold clear days of winter and the harsh effects of central heating bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks, they also bring uncomfortable dryness and dehydration to the skin of the face, hands, and feet, so don’t forget to lavish your Moisturiser on these areas and maybe indulge in a soothing, hydrating facial. Hands and feet get particularly neglected so a Manicure and Pedicure are excellent ideas.

Hair also suffers at this time year feeling dry and brittle and lack lustre, so don’t forget to get those ends trimmed to avoid split ends and pamper your locks with lashings of conditioner or have a luxurious hair conditioning treatment.

at Omaha Beach on June 6th. Because of an emergency back in Portsmouth I had rush back to England and stepped off the ferry into a taxi, straight to the state banquet be hosted by The Queen at the Guildhall. I thought I was going to be inside in the warm….no such luck. I did though, get the front page picture for the June 5th edition of Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh!

The following morning we in the press fi led through tight security at Southsea Common with thousands of veterans. They had returned to the city from all over the world but the security was not for them, it was for the dozens of heads of state who had come to honour them at the Drum Head Ceremony. Mostly it was for the unprecedented visit of a serving US president, in 1994 being William Jefferson Clinton. So it was imperative I got plenty of good photos of him - the one shown above is my favourite.

I am very proud of the coverage The News provided for it’s readers at that event. We covered the spectacle and told the stories of the individual veterans who were there half a century before. It was a privilege to listen to them and take their pictures. Ten years later at the 60th anniversary there were sadly a lot less present and this year for the 70th, fewer still.

Covering big events as a photographer leaves a big impression, and those shooting the historic events of this year will be lucky enough to have front row seats!

By Steve Reid, Blitz Photography. www.blitzphotography.co.uk

It’s great news for Portsmouth the surrounding area and Gosport in particular, that Sir Ben Ainslie has brought America’s Cup racing to e Solent this summer. e yachting series will attract tens of thousands of visitors and pour millions of pounds into the local economy. Many of us will venture down to the sea to watch what is bound to be one of the most exciting water sporting events Britain has ever seen.

Here, Steve Reid, Owner of Blitz Photography on Stoke Road explains how the presence of this event brings a welcome sense of nostalgia to his days as Senior Staff Photographer at The News.

When I heard that the America’s Cups is going to be on my home turf I couldn’t be more excited. It took me back to the summer of 1994 when I working at The News. That year the paper had to cover three major events, the 800th anniversary of the Portsmouth City Charter, the visit of the Tour de France and welcoming thousands of Normandy veterans for the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Planning for all these events took many months and was a big headache for the senior editorial staff. The crowning jewel of the year was the D-Day commemorations. I had been in France with our advanced team to shoot the service

time, the muscle begins to exhaust so working that muscle for any longer is wasted effort!

30 seconds of strength training is also the secret to burning fat and raising metabolism. To burn fat you need to build muscle fi rst, to ‘eat away’ at the fat stores and this process only takes 30 seconds to kick in. To raise your metabolic rate you need more muscle tissue because muscle tissue is metabolically more active and burns more calories long after a workout has fi nished!

The added bonus to this workout is that you haven’t got time to get bored or fatigued as before you know it, you’ve moved onto the next machine. In 30 minutes you can achieve a full body workout with time to spare to enjoy the rest of your day or evening.

So, what are you waiting for? Give us a call and see what 30 minutes at Curves will do for your body!

By Fran Noble, Curves, for Women. www.curvesgosport.co.uk

‘How can you achieve a Full Body Workout in 30 minutes?’ is a question commonly asked by ladies when visiting Curves. e answer is simple – hydraulic resistance!

In a traditional gym, this can take more than 3 times longer to do cardio then resistance training on all the muscles. At Curves you save time by performing cardio and resistance training simultaneously with one another by using hydraulic resistance, instead of weight stacks or free weights, working 2 muscle groups on one machine.

These machines are arranged in a circuit designed to move you onto the next machine after a 30 second blast. This is because your muscles work to their optimum strength during the fi rst 30 seconds of a work out. After this

Family Matters...

questions about the cutting, simply say that now that you are aware of it, you want to help her fi nd other ways of expressing deep emotions. Your daughter is not cutting herself in order to die, she is doing it to live. Hold that thought. Many adults with happy and fulfi lled lives have a self-harming history behind them and, with the right help at the right time, they got beyond it.

Parents will ask me about withholding access to the internet, to the smartphone, to all ways of information-gathering that may contribute to the harming behaviour. That’s a tough question and I would say that if you immediately and instinctively ban these sites, then your teen-ager will fi nd another way to access them. If however, you can fi nd agreement with her, that she will let go of these contacts and is pre-pared to seek help and advice from established services, then there is a high likelihood that she will begin to feel as though you are in a team with her, not against her. The internet, phone, and so on, did not seek out your daughter, she discovered the sites and found something there that interested her. That’s why you need her agreement to change her behaviours.

Another source of ‘advice’ that may be infl uenc-ing your child is her peers at school. If you be-come aware that there is a cutting group, then you must inform the school, who is responsible for the safety of all its pupils whilst they are in it. You don’t even have to identify yourself, but you will need to say which year group is involved and how many pupils, if you can. Then the school can be vigilant and try to stop the spread of this, I would term it, virus.

More girls than boys cut themselves during the teen years, but this is increasingly a teenage male issue as well.

Although cutting, along with restricting food intake, are the two most prevalent self-harming methods in todays teenage society, most of the above advice is equally applicable to other forms of self-injury.

By Pam Gully, Charterhouse Counselling. www.charterhousecounselling.co.ukSee advert of Page 5 for full list of services offered.

When should alarm bells start to ring? Suppose you discover that your mid-teen daughter has been harming herself, cutting her arms. She is also looking up self-harm sites on the internet and may be encouraged by vile people to cut deeper. at is a scenario that strikes dread into her loving parents and the reaction is o en panic, guilt and a desperate, ‘what can we do to stop it?’

Pam Gully from Charterhouse Counselling offers the following advise.

Many times I am contacted by the parent of a teenager who is unhappy at school, or is exhibiting problematic behaviour at home. Sometimes, particularly if the teenager is reluctant to accept help and the risks are not great, supporting the parent is at least as helpful as a direct intervention with their child.’

The fi rst step is to take a while to manage your emotional reaction and not vent it on your child. If your teenage child thinks that you are scared and out-of-your-depth, then she will doubt you can provide useful help and advice. So, having talked it through with your partner/your own parent or a trusted friend, it is time to speak to your teenager about it.

You are aware that she is cutting (don’t say ‘hurting herself ’, that sounds as though you don’t understand) and you would like to sup-port her with any struggle she is having. If she doesn’t want to talk to you (don’t take this personally, it isn’t a failure on your part) then she may be willing to talk to an experienced counsellor.

Try to sound calm and reasonable, don’t ask

of their homes. This can only be a positive thing for buyers and sellers alike.

However, The new bandings do lead to some unpredictable differences in amounts saved when compared to the old rules. The closer you get to the upper limit of each new band, the less ‘saving’ there is. For example, a purchase price £230,000 results in tax of £2,100, a saving of £200 on the old rules whereas a purchase price of £250,000 represents no saving at all.

Similar discrepancies exist throughout the bandings and it is somewhat of a lottery as to how much buyers will benefi t from the new rules but one thing is clear – it is only those with over £1m to spend on their homes who will be paying more tax.

In my view, the latest changes are likely to have a much wider impact on the market than previous attempts to kickstart the market and they mark a common sense change to an inequitable and unequally applied tax.

By Adam Corcoran (pictured above), Director and Head of Property Department at Donnelly & Elliott solicitors.

www.gosportsolicitors.co.uk

Welcome to the rst of six articles written by three of the solicitors here at Donnelly & Elliott. We hope to provide you with interesting and up to date information in some of our main areas of practice – Family Law, Property and Wills and Probate.

Stamp Duty Land Tax – Welcome changes for the market.

At the time of writing this fi rst article there has been a major change announced in the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget in the way that Stamp Duty Land Tax (‘SDLT’) is calculated. The Government estimates that this is likely to represent a saving for 90% of all people buying properties on or after the 4th December 2014. In comparison to the existing rates, savings can be made for all residential house purchases up to £973,500.

Since 4th December 2014 tax is paid on each ‘slice’ of the purchase price at the following rates:

Band Rate£0-£125,000 0%£125,001-£250,000 2%£250,000-£925,000 5%£925,001-£1,500,000 10%£1,500,000 + 12%

The impact of the new rates is likely to be signifi cant for the market. Previously, properties worth just over £250,000 often sold for no more than that amount due to the extra £5,000 payable in SDLT on a purchase price of just £1 more. Under the new rules, a purchase price of £251,000 will only result in tax of £2,550 instead of £7,530. A similar barrier has been broken down at the £500,000 mark.

The removal of these barriers from the market should allow prices to spread and sellers to benefi t from more subtle increases in the value

• Stimulate your baby’s intellectual development.

• Better communication enriches development.

Could signing inhibit a baby’s natural instinct to learn to talk?• A good singing company

will always say the word as they sign and encourage you to. Signing is not a replacement for language it is a useful tool to emphasise the key word of a sentence.

• Gesture is a natural and essential stage of early speech development.

I have signed with all 3 of my children and when I was researching in to classes I found

a large selection of groups. For most groups I

attended I would choose by location or price, however with baby signing I chose not to go with either and went for value for money as I was enriching

my children’s development. They

all signed well, talked with advanced vocabulary

and took an interest in reading at a very early age when they started signing to me using books, something my teacher encouraged.

What I looked for in a signing group.• A structured programme

that focused on daily

routines like mealtimes, bedtimes and bath times and things children love, like animals and vehicles.

• Classes that restricted numbers.

• Different curriculums for each stage of my babies development, I could see that a 2 week old baby would be developing differently to a 6 month old or 18 month old.

• How long had it be running for? Signing had become popular and I found lots of local groups.

• Look to see if it has won awards, especially if they have been voted for by parents!

• Guidelines i.e one sign per sentence means normal speech remains natural.

• Is there a curriculum? Who wrote it? Interestingly some are written with the help of Speech and Language experts.

Teaching has allowed me help hundreds of families create an amazing connection with their beautiful babies and see the benefi ts for themselves.

Sing & Sign classes now take place at Monkey Bizness in Gosport.

By Carrie White, Sing & Sign.Call: 07902 474218

Sing & Sign teacher, Carrie White, rst discovered the group back in 2006 and due to the incredible bene ts it bought to her own family she is now a teacher herself. Here, she shares with us her views on Baby Signing and why she would recommend it to every parent.

What is baby signing?Babies naturally use gestures to communicate before their fi rst words. ie. waving, clapping and pointing. Baby Signing encourages these natural gestures and helps your baby to communicate before speech. To start signing babies need; to have good attention and eye contact already in place, their parent needs to understand the value of repetition, anticipation, praise, facial expression etc. These essential elements build the framework for good communication.

What are the benefi ts of signing? • It can

eliminate many of the frustrations of being pre-verbal.

• You can empower your baby to communicate.

• You will be amazed at what your baby can tell you.

• Your baby can enjoy confi dence and increased self-esteem.

• Expand your baby’s vocabulary.

my son was 10 months old, I was trying

to settle him in the middle of the night, he did not one but

two signs! He’d had a bottle and been changed but just wouldn’t

so proud, I forgot how tired I was!”

Local Fitness Trainer opens new Wellness Centre for Woman...

The founder of BodyBlast & BuggyBlast Bootcamps, one of the largest independent outdoor fi tness classes in the South, is delighted to announce the offi cial opening of Gosport’s newest wellness centre, exclusively for woman.

The centre, based at Unit 22 on Weevil Lane Business Park, offers a full timetable of classes in fi tness and nutrition and takes the extensive fi tness services already offered by Kelly (Fielding) to a new level. It is the biggest expansion to her business since she launched the company 6 years ago after reaching an all time low in her life having been made redundant from her job.

As a professional fi tness instructor Kelly feels it is important to practice what she preaches and having tried every new exercise trend under the sun, she has put together an exercise routine of core activities that help to build, not only your fi tness, but your personal confi dence and general wellbeing. These are running, circuit training, weight lifting, boxing, eating clean healthy foods and having a healthy work/life balance.

Kelly comments, “Having experienced a lot of emotional hardship over the years in both my

personal and professional life I really know and understand how it feels to be at rock bottom – and that’s a really great place to build from! For me exercise, in particular, boxing, helped to through some of my darkest hours. My hope and aspirations for the new wellness centre is that I can demonstrate the positive effects exercise can play in everybody’s life. I want it to be a place for women to come along and let off steam, whether that is through hitting the bags, getting in a boxing ring and sparring or just talking to us. My team and I look forward to welcoming you”.

• Poached eggs, on sprouted grain toast with tomato slices.

• Smoothie made with frozen berries, frozen mangos, silken organic tofu, low-fat plain yogurt. (place in the fridge the night before).

• Goats cheese frittata, with peppers and spinach.

Follow an exercise programme you enjoy: Exercise shouldn’t feel like a chore or something that has to be checked off your to do list. It should be a priority and an activity that fi ts into your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth or taking out the rubbish. However, kick-starting your workout regime can be a challenge because there is often an excuse or activity that gets in the way of taking care of yourself. Most people will sign up to a gym in January, agree to a 12 month contract and then within the fi rst 2 - 3 weeks stop going and end up still paying for the rest of that year. Find something you enjoy, something that motivates you and that you come away from feeling invigorated and challenged. Don’t feel you have to stick with one thing try a number of different activities within the fi rst few weeks of January to see what one is suitable for you.

Never Give Up: No matter the circumstance, never stop working towards what you want to achieve. A healthy lifestyle is forever, not something that happens for a year and then dissipates. If you’re taking control of your own body and health, stick with it. It’s OK to have an off day and want to be lazy, but it’s important to fi ght through the stress, the long days and busy schedules. Push through your workouts and your journey to a healthier lifestyle. Fight for your right to be fi t and fabulous.

So a er the festivities it’s time to get back in a healthy frame of mind and get back on track with your diet and training. I am sure we are all feeling a little bloated, sluggish and lethargic a er the last two weeks of eating and drinking, Have you noticed that you have gained weight - the weight has crept on but you aren’t sure how or why! Well I do! Did you know that during Christmas the average person puts on over 5lb and consumes an extra 250 calories a day?

The evidence is clear. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefi ts than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better. So why not make this your year to start getting in shape.

I love New Year. It almost seems like we can start all over, fi nally become that wonderful, productive, healthy, happy person we’ve always wanted to be. The trouble is, the enthusiasm to make changes, especially with exercise and diet, tends to fade once we realise we can’t change everything overnight.

If you want to make lasting changes then try following these 3 simple tips. Remember, small changes, make BIG improvements.

Eat Breakfast: Start the day with a well-balanced breakfast which includes a lean protein-rich food along with whole grains and veggies or fruit. High-quality protein at breakfast will help control your appetite all day. Breakfast starts your metabolic engine and is associated with successful maintenance of weight loss. Without it, you are prone to overeating later in the day.

Here are some healthy options that you may want to consider and also remember to drink at least 2 litres of water throughout the day.

, Lee-on-Solent, we have a delicious, hearty homemade

IngredientsSoup1 butternut squash, halved and seeded.1 tablespoon olive oil, or as needed.Salt and ground black pepper to taste.2 cups vegetable stock.1 clove of garlic1 onion red or white chopped1 teaspoon curry powder

Lime Cream:1/2 cup sour cream1 tablespoon lime juice1 lime, zested

IngredientsIngredientsIngredientsIngredientsIngredients

MethodFor the Soup:• Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Line a

baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminium foil.

• Place butternut squash, cut-side up, on the prepared baking sheet.

• Coat the cut sides with olive oil; season with salt and pepper.

• Bake in the preheated oven until butternut squash is tender when pierced with a fork. 45 minutes to 1 hour should suffi ce.

• Remove squash from oven and cool slightly (about 10 minutes).

• Brown the onions in a little olive oil then scoop fl esh from roasted butternut squash and transfer to a saucepan.

• Add stock, garlic, curry powder, salt, and pepper. Bring squash mixture to a simmer until fl avours blend. This should take about 15 minutes.

• Blend.

For the Lime Cream:• Stir sour cream, lime juice and lime

zest together in a bowl until lime cream is evenly mixed.

• Serve soup in bowls and top with a dollop of lime cream.

Everyone has different tastes so don’t be afraid to add more garlic, seasoning or spice. If you want to be healthier and skip the sour cream then stir the lime zest and juice directly into the soup.

Spread a little love...

Where did all the love go?Bring back the romance and make Valentine’s

Day extra special this year.Romance is dead – it’s become a familiar adage. This is certainly the case for most, according to a recent survey conducted by Sainsbury’s, in which one in ten men believed putting the toilet seat down counted as a ‘thoughtful gesture’. It would seem that the days when men used to write their feelings down in a letter and order expensive bouquets of fl owers have been lost to a bygone era of chivalry.

Valentine’s Day, whether you believe it to be consumerist tripe or the most romantic day of the year, it does present you with the opportunity for bold romantic gestures.

The Modern Gesture. The last decade has seen romance catapulted into the 21st century with many couples using technology to aid their gestures. From heartfelt statuses on Facebook to personalised music on You Tube, technological advances have provided romance with a much needed upgrade.

Smaller token of aff ection.Now showing acts of love don’t have to break the bank, in fact sometimes the little things that are a bit out of the ordinary count just as much as the expensive mini-breaks to luxury spas. You could try one of these;

Write a LetterIn our hyper-technical world of Social Media, non-verbal communication has become rather impersonal. Somewhere between texting and instant messenger the letter has died a quiet death. Giving it a revival this Valentines Day provides a thoughtful and traditional way to tell your loved one just how much they mean to you.

Pack a PicnicThough February weather poses certain restrictions, packing a picnic is a retro way to create some old school romance. Include all your partners favourite foods, a bottle of champagne or prosecco and fi nd a picturesque spot to watch the world go by. If the weather doesn’t want to play ball then pull up on the top of a nice hill or on a cliff by the sea and enjoy your romantic lunch in the car.

Breakfast in BedBreakfast in bed is one of life’s great pleasures, so why not start the day in this romantic way. Extra points will be awarded for efforts with presentation and some form of fl oral arrangement.

Romantic Meal OutPut the cooking and the washing up in the hands of someone else and treat your loved one to a romantic dinner. You may fi nd that many local restaurants and eating establishments will be offering special themed menus to help make your evening extra special.

It’s the start of a New Year, but for many January isn’t the happiest of months. Experts label Monday 26th January as ‘Blue Monday’, the most depressing day of the year.

ʻBlue Monday’ is termed as such due to bad weather, Christmas debts, the end of the festive season and low motivational levels, all taking their toll on people by Monday 26th January. These factors can contribute to lack of sleep resulting in higher stress levels. By getting a good nights sleep these ailments can be dramatically reduced, helping you to feel refreshed and in better health.

Bed specialists Direct Discount Beds & Flooring, based on Stoke Road in Gosport, suggest that as people spend more than a third of their lives in bed, it is vital to invest in a mattress that provides optimal comfort, which in turn helps to improve health and wellbeing.

Stephen Atkinson, Co-owner of Direct Discount Beds & Flooring comments, “It is suggested that adults should get eight hours of sleep a night, but due to the busy world we live in people only average 6 hours each evening or less in some cases. A good mattress is therefore paramount in aiding a comfortable night. The perfect mattress confi rms to your body – not the

other way around and we offer a selection of choices that do just that!”

Mattresses on offer at Direct Discounts include;

• Memory Foam - an innovative material designed to shape itself to the contours of your body and mould back into shape when pressure is released.

• Pocket Sprung - more luxurious, with up to 3,000 individual small springs housed in separate fabric pockets. They tend to have hand-stitched sides for strong, stable edges and are usually padded with fi llings such as cotton, lambs wool and mohair.

• Bonnell Sprung - an open coil sprung unit and the most common type of spring used in a mattress. They come in different types of fi rmness. Soft, Medium and Firm.

• Orthopaedic - provides fi rm support, distributing the body weight to alleviate stress on the spine, relieving painful pressure points, and helping to maintain proper posture

All of these mattress (and beds) are approved by the National Bed Federation.

A registered installer is a skilled workman who installs these appliances all the time and as such can guide you through the whole process. Since 2002 it has been a criminal offence if you do not inform local building control of a solid fuel installation. A Hetas Registered installer is the only person who can certifi cate your stove to meet legislation.

What maintenance does my wood-burning stove require? All woodburning stoves should be serviced and their fl ues swept at least once a year. The service would include the replacement of broken or damaged, rope seals, gaskets, fi rebricks, glass and fi re cement seals. All moving parts should be checked in order that they are able to move freely when in operation.

Why use Stoves Hampshire? As a local company we always give top quality service & workmanship in all aspects of what we do. We treat your home with the same respect & consideration we give to our own and upon completion we ensure you have a full understanding of how to use your new installation. Stoves Hampshire will undertake every aspect of your project, from the initial visit/design and planning right through to commissioning and certifi cation. This includes opening up the fi replace, plastering and removal of the waste.

ere has never been a better time to switch to a wood-burning Stove...

A wood-burning stove is one of the most environmentally friendly ways of heating individual rooms, or indeed your whole house, because timber is a carbon neutral fuel. This means it absorbs as much carbon during growth as it releases when burnt. it also makes good economic sense, timber for fuel is typically 40% cheaper than oil or gas and with recent price rises in both; the savings are only likely to increase.

If you currently have an open fi re in your home, a wood-burner could provide a better option for you as they use up to 4 times less wood, burn overnight and are cleaner and safer.

Key Benefi ts to a Wood-Burning Stove.• Highly effi cient and up to 3 times cheaper

than a conventional gas fi re, without the smell, fuss or mess of an open fi re.

• Better for the environment with clean burn technology. Plus, when used with good quality fuel from a managed source it is indeed renewable energy.

• For many people it’s simply the eye-catching look and cosy feel of a real fi re they always wanted. Logburners also add value and appeal to your home.

Is a Registered Installer required to fi t?
