@the core of my photography
lies the belief that “Everything is
also something else.” When I look
at anything through a camera,
I sense another world, another reality
beyond what I see. If the photograph
I take is successful, that ‘other world’
comes into being almost by magic,
a kind of alchemy. My aim is not to
record something, it is to reveal a
something else.
My focus is on the form and composition
of the subject, its placement in the
frame and the light that defines it.
Sometimes it is the quality of the light
itself or the absence of it, such as a
shadow, that seizes me. The focus may
also be on the emotional quality of
the form and light in their abstract
manifestations.
When the form, light and composition
are synchronous, in phase, there is
always a palpable feeling that tells
me I am on to something, at which
point I strive to simplify, to strip away
unnecessary elements that distract
from the essence of the experience.
I am called upon to tell a story and
convey a feeling with an economy of
means. Economy is power and I am in
its grip.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

haPPy neW year! I hope 2010 was good to you, and I’m excited to share with you the upcoming events and exhibits for 2011 at the museum. We start in January with a black and white photography exhibit from Burton Pritzker–Texas Rangeland & Other Series in Premier I and selections from his Pathfinder, Artifacts, Forgotten Planes and Metroplis series in Premier II. Most of his work is a fresh take on an abstract view of everyday items. We’ll have some of his books on sale in our gift shop.
We welcome ten new board members this January! I’ll introduce them in our February newsletter, so we’ll look forward to that. Put February 12 on your calendar for the guild’s Valentine Tea Room and Style Show during the day, then that evening we’ll have our annual Wine Tasting! February will also be the kick-off for our annual membership drive. One of the projects in the works is to make sure members of the museum get special privileges. For instance, in December when we went to Crystal and Patrick Bowles house in Spring Hill for cocktails, next year Barbara Pool has offered her house. However, the cocktail portion of the evening will be FOR MEMBERS ONLY. We will also offer members 10% off all event tickets, so when the general public pays $75, you will only pay $67.50. It’s our way of saying thanks for being a loyal member of the museum and helping us maintain and keep going throughout the year.
In March, we’ll have our Short Exposure Photography Exhibit for two weeks, with an opening and closing reception. This year’s exhibit will be juried, with cash prizes awarded. That will move our 51st High School Student Invitational to open the weekend after schools get back from Spring Break. We hope in this way more students and teachers can attend the opening and see the prizes awarded. Our juror for that will be Ray Daniel, former curator of the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont, currently teaching at the North Texas State University in Denton. His contemporary paintings will be on display in the Wrather Gallery as you walk in the door, where we’ll have his gallery talk and award the students’ ribbons. This exhibit will be up through April.
You’re going to be excited about the Cowboys and Indians exhibit in May/June! Fourteen Andy Warhol prints will be on display from his “Cowboys and Indians” series, provided by a local collector. We will also have pieces from the Singleton - Biss Museum of Fine Art in Santa Fe by sculptor Gib Singleton and painter Earl Biss, as well as pieces from Jack and Nelda Strong’s collection here in Longview. To finish out this exhibit, Cliff Vanderpool, director of the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas will be here to give a gallery talk and share pieces from their western collection. Cliff is the recent past president of Texas Association of Museums and I know you’ll enjoy hearing him speak.
Our East Texas Regional Art exhibit opening in July will feature the winner of March’s Short Exposure Photography exhibit on our newsletter’s front cover. That person, along with artists Shirley Blackman, Beverly Sheveland, Dennis O’Bryant, Stacy Deslotte, Connie Connally and Tony Reans will round out our show. It’s a wonderful mixture of talent that I’m sure you’ll love! This exhibit will remain up through our August 28 Casino Night at the end of the next month.
Remember the sculpture”Rock, Paper, Scissors” that we acquired and put on the Exhibit cover a few year’s ago? Kevin Box and Warren Cuellar collaborated on that piece, and they’ll both be bringing pieces for our September/October exhibit, including a 9’ rendition of “Rock, Paper, Scissors”! That should be an amazing exhibit, ending with our annual Spooky Art Show in October.
Then artist Nancy Lamb will round out our year with her beautifully vibrant party paintings. You can see examples of all of these artists’ works in our 2011 desk calendar that you should have received by now. If your case arrived crushed or broken, just let us know and we’ll replace it. Nancy’s painting is on the back of the August card to promote Casino night, as well as the month of December. But in 2012, our calendar will be all Nancy Lamb paintings for the entire year! We’re very excited about this project and look forward to handing these out to our members and visitors!
We try our best and know we can always do better next time, and are constantly trying to figure out how to do that. We want you to be happy with us, and we welcome your input. Thank you for your support as we look forward to 2011!
Sincerely,
Renee Hawkins, Director

PRESIDENT’S COlUMNPut on your seat belts and enjoy the ride because 2011 has many fun and interesting things in store. The LMFA staff and Board of Directors have been hard at work to present an exciting schedule of exhibits and events. Now all we need is YOU, our members, to complete the fun. Without YOU, our doors would be closed and the lights would be off. YOU are the heartbeat of the museum, our raison d’etre.
I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the LMFA’s new president. Our outgoing president, Frank Chaney, had an outstanding year. In, fact, Frank loved it so much he served as president for two years in a row. We owe him a debt of gratitude and will always love to see him grace our threshold. My goal this year is to maintain the upward momentum and continue to involve as much of the community as possible so that the museum serves as YOUR museum. With the help of a committed Board of Directors, active Friends Guild, outstanding staff, and YOU, anything is possible!
So, mark your calendars with the enclosed events and actively participate in all the museum has to offer. I have learned so much over the years during the gallery talks at the museum; the blending of the love of fly fishing and art, an artist’s rendering of African dreams that existed only through oral tradition, and even a nationally recognized artist and child prodigy that discovered that although she could not draw, she could paint. There truly is something for everyone.
The new front awning lights are flashing and we are looking forward to all that 2011 will bring!
Sincerely,
Cindy Graham

We’d like to thank Wells Fargo Advisors, East Texans
Against Lawsuit Abuse and Bud Dunn for promoting and
providing support to us this year with our exhibits and
events. As always our board members and Friends’ Guild
do so many wonderful things in their spare time, and we
appreciate the many gifts of time and money that help the
museum run smoothly. Terry Hawkins, Jack Mann, Kasha
Williams, Danita Utsman, Anne Hugman, Nancy Mobley
and Charlotte Wrather have donated time and/or money
to special projects so we especially want to thank them,
and Frank Chaney for being our board president in 2010.

Niki’s NotehaPPy neW year! I am So excITeD abouT 2011.
We’re hoping to add another canopy to our outside facade and put a
big ArtWorks logo over the old hardware building next door. We’ll be
moving the front door to the left side to make the space wheelchair
accessible. We’ll also have a wall inside thanking all of our donors for
making this project possible. There will be a space for children’s art
to be displayed, a huge classroom with concrete floors, skylights, tin
ceilings and best of all – a huge concrete sink for cleanup and real
public restrooms! This space will connect to the main museum through our art library and we’ll
have a modern lecture hall and meeting room in the back! The more we collect, the more we can
do and the sooner we can get going! If you’d like to help with this project, just talk to me, Renee,
Michelle or any of our board members.
We had a super Breakfast with Santa, as well as a wonderful Holiday Tea Room and Market. You
can see the beautiful tables decorated in different country themes accented by Marge Kimbrough
Dome’s dolls, and some of the market booths we had for our guests’ holiday shopping in this issue.
We do have some sadness to report with the loss of Carter Mayes, a young guest that was here
with his mom, brother and sister at Breakfast with Santa, who was killed later that day in a car
accident. We are also saddened by the loss of one of last years LMFA Student Board Members,
Jeremy Bethune, who represented Spring Hill High School. It is so hard to suffer the loss of loved
ones, especially over the holidays and we want to extend our sincere sympathy to these families, as
well as Advisory Board member Lou Galosy and his wife Jane Cunningham with the loss of their
daughter Lee in Taos at the end of November.
I look forward to 2011 being a year of healing, repair and growth.
Thank you for all you do for LMFA

lETTER FROM THE GUIlD PRESIDENTLmFa FrIenDS neWS
The Holiday Tea Room is now part of our memories, and what great ones we can recall later! There are so many to thank, and hopefully I won’t forget anyone. Beginning with:
• The many members of LMFA Friends who worked so hard to set up, serve and stayed to clean up
• To the members of the LMFA board who showed up in great numbers to help on Friday
• To Mary Murdoch for agreeing to chair the Holiday Tea Room this year
• To the LMFA Staff for all their support during the preparation and execution of the tea room
• To Adam Wagner and Perfect Catering for such delicious food every day
• To Charlotte and John Wrather, the backbone of the kitchen staff during the tea room; along with Janie Tate and Dawn Craig, from their office. • To the many designers who decorated such outstanding tables and really set the stage for our Christmas around the world. (Some have already asked about next year and suggested a theme, and have requested to design a table for next year.)
• To the musicians who entertained each day
• To Tom Bell and Patricia Newman from Kirby’s Wholesale who donated 10 dozen soup spoons to our tea room inventory
• To the vendors who added so much to our holiday spirit and offered such a variety of items for shoppers
If I have omitted any one person from my “thank you” list, I apologize and chalk it off to my tired brain that has not completely recovered from such a wonderful week!
Plans have been formulated for our next opening on January 15th. We are continuing our journey around the world and will be enjoying Italian food. Debbie Sadler has already selected a menu that promises no one will go home hungry!
The menu has also been planned for the Valentine’s Day Luncheon on February 12, 2011. Lori’s Eats and Sweets, from Gilmer, will prepare a three salad plate which will include chicken salad, broccoli salad, and fruit salad. I can attest that all three of these salads are delicious. Anything else that will be included will just be window dressing.
We still have a long list of items on the wish list, so look for it in this issue and see if you can help us out with anything. We are continuing to work on the organization of our pantry at the museum. We will be rounding up all serving dishes that have been brought to the museum for previous openings. Since our space is so limited for now, any of those items not claimed and taken home will be donated to some of the non-profit resale shops.
In closing, I want to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year. See you at LMFA next year.
Sincerely,
Danita Utsman, President, Friends Guild

her socks, undershirt or whatever she decided to add to the canvas while she was working. She

Please remember as a member of LMFA you can come here for free and bring a guest – your
membership is a marker of your dedication to the arts and your community. Without your
support, it makes it very difficult to pay the monthly insurance, utilities and salaries, much
less be able to plan and carry out programs. We could not plan wine tastings, casino nights,
street dances and galas without your support! We also could not maintain our sculpture
garden without your support! So take advantage of the wonderful food and drinks our
dedicated guild provides at the private artist receptions six times per year for members only.
SUPPORT lMFA
A gIft in honor or in memory of a loved one is truly a living tribute. It honors the person and is an investment in the museum and in our community by supporting the museum.
A trIbute is a great way to honor a person or celebrate a significant accomplishment and, in addition, is a meaningful gift to give to the person "who has everything" or is hard to buy for.
A MeMorIAl is an expression of concern and a way to acknowledge the memory of a deceased loved one, friend or relative. This is a lovely way to make a donation in lieu of flowers.
The Longview Museum of Fine Arts will send a card to the honoree or bereaved on behalf of the donor and, with permission, list the tribute in LMFA newsletters. The amount of the gift will not be shared with anyone. All donations to the Tribute and Memorial Fund are 100% tax-deductible.
